By a 7-6 vote, the congression- al subcommittee rejected an amendment by Rep. Norm Dicks (D-Wuhington) to include the language, which would keep the - oil drilling ban intact. Costa Mesa firefighters were called to the blaze at 4:28 p.m. by residents in the trailer park near the gardges. When firefighters arrived at the scene, smoke was billowing from behind the two wooden garage doors -one of which bad to be cut open with a chainsaw to allow fire- fighters access. Once inside the medium-sized garages filled with everything but vehicles, firefighters doused the blaze in seconds. according to Cos- ta Mesa Fire Battalion Chief Jim Ellis. . Minutes after the fire was extin- guished and the bowels of the garages w e re reduced to acrid black shells, Ellis estimated the da mage at $5,000 but said it was too e arly to dete rmine the cause of the fire. "What makes Taylor special?" asked Mrs. Duncan. her arm around my son. The hands shot up. "Taylor's a good friend." ."Taylor's a great basketball playe.r." "Taylor's nice to everyone." Taylor beamed, a shy grin stretching dcross his face. Each kid -on her or his spe- cial day -gets the same treat- ment.
