They have also been success-ful in persuading the owners of the Tuhiti·Inn on Victoria Avenue ~o complete a number of manda- tory repairs. The teams closed the motel down for a short time late last year, until the owner com- pleted mandatory repairs. , Meanwhile, city officials have be9n working to improvq rela- Uonsbips with motel owners and are developing a •network• of Wormation that can be shared among the owners and local authorities. ·we already have a number of the owners' names and te~pbone numbers in the computer~o that we know who to contact in the early morning hours when prob- lems arise." said Costa Mesa Police Lt. Alan Kent, who bas been a driving force behind enforcement efforts at the motels. "We're also beginning to have the owners call us to let the city know about areas of problems.• Of the city's 35 lodging opera- tions, six have been identified as •very high• pnority cases. The ran.kings are based on building conditions and public safety • records. The Coast Motel on Newport Boulevard tops the list. Last year, police respond••d to 118 calls for service at the 11-unit property. That averages out to nearly 11 calls for each room. The Costa Mesa Motor Inn on Harbor and the Sea Breeze, Tern Inn and Sea Lark motels, all on Newport, follow next in line. The Costa Mesa Motor Inn. which has 236 rooms, bad a total of 346 calls for police last year. The 73-unit Sea Breeze Apart· • ment Hotel elicited 86 calls. The Sea Lark, with 40 units, generat- ed 78; and the 13-unit Tern Inn had 48. However, city officials cau· tioned against putting too much weight on the number of police visits at each motel. •Since the Police Department encourages motel (and) hotel owners and managers to call to report problems or suspicious activities, some calls are just the result ot attentive management practices,• according to a staff report given to the coundl on Monday. In addition to his pass catching skills, which he said were boned by 10 years of soccer goalkeeping (he played only one year at Harbor), Freeman's sturdy build served him well as a blocker. Freeman also started at defensive end and punted as a junior, and joined fellow seruors Dan McDonough and Matt Riggle to form what Servile Coach Larry Toner called one of the better linebacking corps he's seen at the prep level. Freeman, who also played first base for three varsity baseball seasons, will concentrate exclusively on football next fall at Orange Coast College. OCC Coach Bill Workman said be plans to utilize Freeman at both tight end and fullback. •t like the sound of that (fullback duty) a lot,· said Freeman, who because of his lack of height. may be more attractive to four·year schools as a back than as a tight end, where most big·time programs seek someone at least 6-t. ·aut first.
