By 2 p.m. my urge to lake a nap is as irrepressible as an upcoming sneeze. Sadly, napping today is a lost discipline, the casualty of upward mobility. Who here in Orange County has the time ror a nap; and furthermore, who would admit it? Well, 1 have and I do. My affinity for napping bas endured nine years ofdomes- ticated motherhood, 10 years of office work and 16 years in the classroom (quite possibly the source, nght there). It could be a hereditary quirk. My father ritually napped in h1s leatherchair for 30 minutes every night while the girls did the dmner dish- es. This routine obviously worked well for him. When my work was con- fined to an ofhce, I would fre- quenUy steal off to a quiet street in lieu of lunch and enjoy 15 minutes of shut-eye. Today. at home with young children, I embrace naps more Joyously than ever. Though my boys haven't learned to savor the hme as I hdve, they do by andlarge respect it, pr<'ferring to call it "quiet time" rather than the IPss operative "nap time." He asked that the helicopter travel at a speed of exactly 117 knots. Tozer ultimately had a reason foJL his unusual request, Wynn said. • 117 knots was the cruising speed of his B-17 bomber,· said Wynn. "He wanted to see what the Pavilion looked like from the air doing 117 knots.• Tozer's son Matthew, who closed the ceremony, said his father was a dedicated family man and a suc- cessful businessman who gave out of generosity. The Balboa Pavilion reception following the service provided a casual place for Tozer's many friends to share more warm memo- ries. "I have probably known Phil longer that anyone else,• said child- hood fnend Helen Cram Starr, whose family remains close to the Tozers. "Our parents bumped bug- gies at the orcus when he was five months and I was one month old and we've been friends ever since.· Starr remembered how Tozer treated her Wee his own sister. •He was a pest and he drove me crazy,• Starr said. •(When we went camping) in my sleepmg bag there wai always a snake and there would be a todd in the sink when I went to wdsh." "l was a chef at the Sea Shanty (now Delaney's)," said Caouette, Tozer's partner at the Pavilion for more than 25 years. •He liked my clam chowder so he took me to the Pavilion and said 'How would you run this place?' He hired me and then sold me the place for next to nothing.· While UJe Pavilion was crowded Monday W1th many close friends, it was apparent that Tozer touched the lives of individuals he had known for only a short time, as well. Harmon Weston, a member of the Corona del Mar Chamber of Conunerce, wore a picture of Tozer -clipped from a newspaper story - on the breast of his yellow blazer.
