Costa Mesa 1 7 s Win bronze medal at Junior Olympics •Local team knocks ~ second-seeded Concor in final gaµie; 15-and- under squad finishes fo . Costa Mesa's 17-and-under water polo team captured the bronze medal last weekend at the National Junior Olympics in Alta- monte Springs, Fla. In th.e medal game, Mesa defeated Concord, the tourna- ment's second seed in the 17-and· under division, 7-5. Senior James Comfort was a standout in the field, scoring four goals on the counterattack from passes by goalie Justin Taylor. Single goals were scored by Todd and Sean Hylton and Elijqh McDanniel. Strong defensive perfor- mances were turned in by Ryan Dandy and Roger Kimos, as well as goalie Taylor, who made eight saves and three steals in the cage. Just the day before, Mesa had played the very same team at which time Concord had come out on top. However, a focused and determined Mesa squad, playing without two-meter man Robert Grayeli who missed the final day of competition, took th.e lead early in the medal game and retained it throughout. Meanwhile, Mesa's 15-and- under team finished fourth in the national tournament, losing, 11-4, to SoCal B in the game for the bronze medal. Sophomores Todd Hylton, Chad Cleaver and Alex Soria, and freshman Hunter Taylor each scored for Mesa-in the final game. Goalie Taylor had eight saves and two steals in the cage. Coach Brian Kreutzkamp, expressing pride in his team's fin- ish, noted that they had been seeded 12th in the competition and had the highest finish of any non-dub team in their division. The teams have now returned to Costa Mesa and will hope to enjoy a three-week break before beginning preparations for the fall season. Mesa will be gunni1'g for its 10th consecubve varsity league title.
