There were more questions
than answers Tuesd ay after the
announcement that Broadway
department stores -including
those in Crystal Court and Fash-
ion Island -will cease to exist
under that name by October.
But the fate of the local stores is
up in the air, company and mall
officials said.
Federated Department Stores
Inc. announced earlier this week
that it has merged with Broadway
Stores Inc., a move that will effec-
tively erase the Broadway name
by the time the merger is com-
plete in October.
At that time, Federated plans
to close several existing Broad-
way stores and convert others to
Macy's, Bullock's or Blooming-

Costa Mesa woman dies in Arizona crash
A 2"·year-old Costa Mesa
woman was among five Orange
County people who died in an
early morning accident Monday
while traveling on an Arizona
highway.
Thanh Tu Huynh, who died of
massive trauma, was thrown from
a 1995 Ford van driven by anoth-
er Costa Mesa resident, Due
Minh 1\"an, also ~.
1\"an was one of six other
Orange County residents who
were injured in the 3:20 a.m. crash
on Interstate 40, about 30 miles
west of Flagstaff, just outside
Williams, Ariz. He was a dmitted

fractured knee and was listed in
fair condition Tuesday.

Burglars destroy~d three display cases
and stole an estimated $5,000 worth of
boating equipment from Minney's Ship
Chandlery late Saturday night, store own-
er Ernest Minney said.
HThey wanted the stuff that was locked
up -brand new, top of the line equip-
ment,• Minney said. "The boy who
opened up Sunday walked into a big
mess."
According to Minney, the thieves
kicked in a door and smashed three show-
cases with a large piece of timber. The
thieves then stole barometers, marine
radios and-navigation instruments -
equipment that would be easy to redistrib-
ute, Minney said.
Broken glass littered the floor of the
shop at 1500 Newport Blvd. According to
Minney, the police also discovered drops
of blood, possibly left by one of the sus-
pects.
The shop has experienced shoplifting
in the past but nothing of the magnitude of
Saturday night's incident, Minney said.
"The police were great, but they
weren't too encouraging,• Minney said.

amount of cash Tuesday ..
At 3:54 p.m., a white male dressed in
dark pants and white shirt entered the
bank at 2701 Harbor Ave., displayed a
gun hidden under his jacket and demand-
ed cash. After an employee complied \vith
his demands, the suspect fled out a back
door. according to Costa Mesa police Sgt.
George Yezbick.
Witnesses described the man as 6 feet
tall, in bis late 40s with short blonde hair,
mustache, a bandaged hand and bad
teeth, Yezbick said.
Police officials are also investigating
whether the robber was the same man
involved in a failed heist at the Home Sav-
ings Bank of America on Monday.
In Monday's robbery attempt, the sus-
pect was thwarted when a dye pack ,
planted in the cash by the bank -explod-
ed, staining the robber and the cash ~th
red ink. The suspect fled and left the cash
behind.

George Kreibich dies at age 72
COSTA MESA -Longtime city resident George
Paul Kreibich, 72, died Monday of cancer.
Kreibich was born in 1923 in Pilsen, Czechoslova-
kia, and lived in Prague throughout the Nazi occupa-
tion during World War II. He -------.., was a medical student at
Charles University in Prague
in 1946, when be met his
future wife, Barbara O'Connor,
a British writer from Australia.
Kreibich fled Czechoslova-
kia after the Communist gov-
ernment takeover in 1948,
married Barbara and moved to
the Uruted States. The couple
became naturalized citizens in
1953. George Kreibtch
In the United States, Kreibich
became a general contractor and built his family a
house in Costa Mesa on Santo Tomas Street. He
supervised the construction of many homes and com-
mercial bwldings in Orange County, including the
federal building in Laguna Niguel. He retired as a
supervisor1octhe Missioa-Viejo Co.~in 1983.
Kreibich finally returned to Czechoslovakia for a
fanuly reunion in 1990 after the Communist govern-
ment was overthrown.
He is survived by his wife: son, Paul: daughter,
Georgina Makishima; mother, Jirina Kreibich;_ ~r.
Blanka Rihacek: and four grandchildren.

Coastline COllege cuts back
on class schedule mailings

COSTA MESA -In an effort
to shave its budget, C~tline
College is testing a. new mailing
approach by sending would-be
students an informational
brochure rather than a fall class
schedule.
Last week, CoastliQ,e mailed
40,000 schedule information
brochures to Costa Mesa homes
within its district borders instead
of mailing the usual full-size
schedule. The brochures gave
residents basic information
about the college and available
courses and listed locations
where students can pick up class
schedules.
Hit's hard to continue (mail-
ing schedules to every home),
semester after semester, but it's
a scary idea to just stop mailing
out schedules when we don't
know what effect it will have on
our enrollment," said Gail
McElroy, director of public rela-
tions at the Fountain Valley-
based college.
The schedules were malled to
continuing Coastline students.
The school probably saved
more than $15,000 by mailing
the brochures this semester,
McElroy said. "But those figures
are really sketchy."
Ed Decker, a dean of instruc-
tion at Coastline, suggested the
brochures as a means to save the
school money. He estimates the
savings at about $30,000 this
semester.
"It was an idea that I came up
with at a meeting when we were
talking about curtailing the
expenses of-printing and mail-
ing," Decker said. The school
printed about 20,000 schedules
for the area, be scµd, as opposed
to the usual 40,000. Decker and
members of his staff check the
nine Costa Mesa pick-up sites
every few days to make sure the
schedules are replenished.
So far, about 2,050 schedules
have been picked ·up, he said.
The most popular pick-up loca-
tions are the supermarkets.
The brochures have a
response card attached which
residents are encouraged to
return to the college to gauge
the effectiveness of the malling.
McElroy's office has received
200 cards as of this week, she

following back surgery.

Third in a series
I n 1985, Bill Workman made
national headlines when he
instituted the first voluntary
random drug-testing plan for high
school football players.
In the spring of 1994, Workman
experienced drugs firsthand.
Not by choice, mind you, put by nece~~ity.
Hr•U tell you what, I know why
people shouldn't take drugs, because
the lows are indeed lower than the
highs are high," Workman said. ·
Workman, entering his 10th season
as Orange Coast College's football
coach, spent 29 days on morphine
following ma1or back surgery.
It was physically the most
burdensome ti.me in Workman's 54
years or life, a period when his ability
to walk again was in doubt.
On April 4, 1994, Workman was
admitted to lrvine Medical Center. He
would spend five weeks in the hospital
"When you're laying in the hospital,
that's an interesting stupor of a state
you're in," Workman said. "I actually
looked at what's going to happen if I
can't walk again. What am I going to
do? Write books? Scout for football? I
didn't have any solutions, but I had to
consider (the options)."
About 1 112 years previous to his
surgery on May l, 1!i94, Workman was
cleaning up in the weight facility at
OCC. He moved a 45-pound weight,
•and obviously I did not do it right."
Workman tore a disc in his back,
diagnosed later as a nerve problem
stemming from a bone spur on his
lumbar disc.
"I guess my body reacted and built
up scar tissue, and the blood vessels
choked off the nerve," he said. "It took
about 1 112 years to d o that."
Work.man was m pain the rest or the
spring semester. On his 52nd birthday
in 1993, June 20. he went to Mammoth
and Yosemite with M wife, Sheri.
Driving home, be was in frightful pain.
Shortly thereafter, doctors told
Workman he bad a bulge in his disc
following a Magnetic Resonance
. Imaging (MRI) and prescribed
anti-inflammatory medication.
Workman survived through the 1993
football season, and the beginning
stages of the spring semester of '94. But
by Easter Sunday, he was in the

the complication.
Surgery was imminent.
Workman weigbed 152 pounds
when be got out, dropping about 33
pounds, while suffenng from atrophy.
He had staples in his back. Three days
after surgery, physical therapists had
him moving a.round the hospital with a
walker,
"They told me, 'You're going to
learn how to walk,' and I thought this
could not be happening to me," he
said. "I made it about 10 steps in about
10 minutes, and praise the Lord, by the
third day, I had walked the whole top
of the hospital. I made a big circle and
came. back."
Workman's life had been physically
active with running, snow skiing,
weightlifting, basketball, just about
anything he desired, one of the reasons
why people say he looks almost 20
years younger than he really is.
His lifestyle, though. had been
slowed to a walker, designed mostly for
people about 30 years older.
Meanwhile, Workman was given
morphine to relieve the physical
anguish, a different type of pain than
before surgery.
"I was (addicted). My body needed
it," Workman said. •After five days,
when [ was home, I was messed up. I
think abou.t my third day home, alter
my wife had left for work, I walked out,
opened the back door and couldn't
remember the name
I'm not supposed to be," Workman
said. "l just fight through the
symptoms. Sometimes, my foot and my
hamstring go numb."
Workman's left side is damaged. He
can't touch his toes. The long-t~rm
assessment is unknown.
"I think ultimately, I can take the
attitude of, 'Why me?' on both cases,·
be said, referring to the back surgery
and subsequent automobile acadent.

It got worse.
Being off the medication caused
other problems, like withdrawals from
the narcotics and night malaria.
"I would go through six T-shirts a
night, and wake up in a sweat every
hour," he said. ·r never would have
made it without my wife. She would
tuck me in bed in the den and let me
flop around."
Eight months ago, he and bis wife
were involved in an automobile
accident in Whittier that reinjured his
back. He's still in physical therapy.

it going. Hey, they're used to being in
that wheelchair. You can have a good
day or a bad day ,in that wheelchair,
and I'm happy not to be in one. Some

that."

around campus, keep in mind it could
be a lot worse.

The day's first race for each
d1vis1on started in light. shifty
four-to six-knot breezes out or
the northwest. Before each fleet
reached the first wmdward mark,
orrunous dark clouds loome3 to
the west
With severe weather guaran-
teed to sweep over the race area,
offlodls shortened the course to
two legs.
As bOdts firushed, they were
sent or towed to the safety of
shore to wait out the storm that
packed high winds, ligbtrung and
heavy ramfall.
After a three-hour rain delay.
sloes cleared, but reconnaissance
missions to the race course, along
with the forecast for little wind
mixed with the potential for more
severe weather cells to develop,
convinced race officials to call an
end to the day's competition.
Race offiaals were hoping to
run at least three races today, the
final of the three-day series
Ongmally, 10 races were
cheduled to be run in each fleet,
but the new plan would call for
seven at the most.
Sixty young athletes overall
between the ages of 13 and 18
are ~m~ting in three separate
events.
