By Evan Henerson, Daily PilOt Some things just can't make it up a simple flight of stairs. Or around com ers, for that matter. Case in point: the first model boat acquired by the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum. The Willochra, the centerpiece of the museum's new model boat collection, is an impressive and rare piece. The museum acquired it from a private col- lection in New Orleans -the wood and gold-plated model had been in storage for several years, according to Jeffrey ~ -Littell, d.trector of the museum's capital development committee. Although the model's origin is uncer- tain, museum workers believe it was built by the same company that built the boat itself. The Wlllochra, constructed in 1913 for the Australian Adelaide Steamship Co., served as a troopship in World War I and later as a passenger carrler. It sank in New York in 1929. Ship builders kept detailed models of their vessels in their offices to display for prospective clients, according to l.J"ttell. • SEE NAUTICAL PAGE 4 - ~ "We've always been con cerned dbout educat- mg students, but one of the things we're hoping is that as w e do enforce our stdndards ngorously, that will ultimately be a deterrent.· he said. Some Ume ago, tbe klng of Tonga visited this country, and the papers invariably referred to him as •His High- ness.• Wrong. Taufa'ahau Tapouu IV, king of Tonga, is referred to as "His Majesty" not "His Highness.• There are two monarchs in the South Pacific, Taufa'ahau Tupouu IV, king of Tonga; and Malietoa Tanumafili II, head of state of Western Samoa. Malietoa is addressed as •Your Highness.· Taufa'ahau is addressed as "Your Majesty." Both are monarchs, but Malietoa is a constitutional monarch while the king of Ton- ga is an absolute monarch. That is the reason for the difference in how they are addressed. The king of Tonga is not only a king, he owns half the land of the islands that make up Tonga. The nobility own the other hall. In Tonga, the natives get down on their hands and knees when addressing the king. In Western Samoa they simply kneel for the head of state. As the chief justice of Amen- can Samoa, I ranked right next lo the governor on the social pecking order, so I knew both monarchs, and while my rela- tionship with the king of Tonga was casual, I became rather good friends with Malietoa. l played golf With Malietoa several times. It was an expen- ence. There is only one golf course in Western Samoa. More important, there is only one golf cart in Western Samoa. And guess who owns that golf cart? Malietoa, of course. You feel pretty important when you are riding in the only golf cart on the course. It was also sort of fun because we played whatever hole His Highness wanted to play. We would play No. 1, then jump to No. S then back to No. 3, and all the other golfers got thenell out of the way. The best part of playmg golf with the head of state was that he was accompanied by a horde of kids who acted as impromptu caddies. They were the best caddies I ever played with. No matter where you hit your ball, when you came to it, it was right m the middle of the fair- way. I mentioned that the natives would kneel in the presence of Malietoa. I was standing m a reception line right next to turn one time. As the natives came to him, they would kneel and then kiss his hand. r could hard- .Jy wait for the same treatment. Drat! When I stuck out my hand they only shook it. My wife, Kane, bumped into a similar troublesome situation involving the king of Tonga. We were attending a reception for the Iring at the Governor'• ,. As we stood m the line, Kane looked ahead and noticed that all the Samoa\l women were dipping into curtsies. "I can't curtsy," wailed Katie. •1 haven't done a curtsy since the first grade. If I try, I'll proba- bly tall down." As we shuffled along in the reception lme, we debated Katie's dilemma. It simply wouldn't do for the wile of the chief justice of Amencan Samoa to fall down rn front of the lang ofTongajustbecauseshe couldn't curtliy. Incidents like that have been known to causfi! wars between nations. Finally, I had a brilliant idea. "If you're so afraid of falling down when you try to curtsy, why don't you do what the Ton- gans do when addressing the kmg?H MWhat do Tongans do?" uThey get down on their bands and knees. That would save you the embarrassment of falling down while trying to curtsy." To say that thdt suggestion met with a chilly response would be an understatement. Finally. r said I had talked to the king a couple of t1I0es, and he seemed a nice enough tel- . tow. I doubted he would have her beheaded Lf she failed to N curtsy. The 1995 football season didn't open Satur- day, Aug. 26, but the five local Costa Mesa Pop Warner teams hosted teams from Brea, Cypress and Redondo Beach for preseason full-contact scrimmage. • The Colts (9-11 years old, weighing 70-105 pounds and any 12-ye~old up to 85 pounds), hosted Brea a t 10 a.m. The Condors (8-10 and weighing 55-90 pounds and any 11-year-old up to 70 pounds), met Redondo Beach at 11 a.m. The Costa Mesa Cowboys (11-13, weighing 95-140 pounds, plus any 14-year-old that weighs under 120 pounds) played Redondo Beach at noon. The Comanches (10-12-year-olds who weigh 85-120 pounds and any 13-year-old under 100 pounds) played at 1 p.m. And the Cobras (7-8-year-olds weighing 45- 80 p ounds and any 9-year-old that has never played before and weighs under 70 pounds), played Cypress in the 2 p.m. finale. a . Colts Coach Ron Amburgey saip the staff, made up of assistants Mark Mueller, Dennis Miller, Fred and Marshall Morgan and Lou DeSandro, decided to run separate units for both offense and defense and came away very pleased with lhe, results. MWe scored four times and only allowed one score, which means our defensive units did their job, and the offense did theirs," said Amburgey. Actual scores are not kept in scrimmages. Ryan Hayward intercepted Brea aerials twice and was able to return one for a score; Kevin DeSandro, Fernando Azurin and Kyle Rausch all ran for touchdowns, while Joey Mueller and Jeff Miller shared quarterback and running back assignments. 0 Condor Coach Vic Larsen said, "Our defense is still ahead of our offense, but we've come a long way since ~ur first scrimmage a week ago. "We had three scrimmages in eight days and when you see that 23 of our players are in their first year, that means we have two returning experienced players.# Jimmy Sanchez scored along with some good ground gains, and B.T. Larsen played--qua.qer- back on offense and defensive end on defense. MHe (B.T.) really stuck the runner on the last play of the scrimmage.# said Coach Larsen. M Our kids were really up at that point, and the Redondo Beach player will remember that hit for a while! "At this level, it's set up to be an instruction- al program with no scores recorded or kept. •Players are to play one half on offense and the other half on defense, but some coaches don't see this as a learning experience for the kids.
