By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot CORONA DEL MAR -Gar- deners at the Oasis Senior Center have no qualms about opening up a Can-0-Worms. In fact, the more worms the better, they say. Touted as the latest sensation in food waste recycling, the Can- 0-Worms is a multilevel plastic container designed to eliminate garbage, yield fertilizer and com- post and, yes, breed up to 20,000 bait worms. city agreed and promptly pur- chased a can. •we had been using a regular wooden worm box, but that didn't function as well,• Shelton said. "This might be a solution for fam- ilies who eat a lot of vegetables and have more kitchen waste than they want to put down the garbage disposal.• The bait worms live in sou on the can's bottom level. Users urhis might be a solu- tion for families who have more kitchen waste than they want to put down the garbage disposal ... " -BARBARA SHELTON • Can-0-Worms and placed· it in the comer of her garage. Although she has had the device for just a few days, Watt expects the can to save her time 411d mon- ey spent on fertilizer and mulch. •(The worms) do such a mag- nificent job of converting the food waste to usable compost," Watt said. "It's actually very entertain- ing to watch.• The recycling process works more quickly the more worms are thrown into the mix. Shelton expects the can to be operating at full potential after about a year. The device, which costs between $85 and $100, does not dispose of green waste or garden clippings. Barbara Shelton, a member of the· city's Environmental Quality Affairs Committee (EQAC), saw the product at an ecological fair and decided it was the perfect device for the Oasis garden. The · place food remains on the second level, enticing the worms to work their way up through the soil. After the garbage breaks down, worm castings filter down to the lower level creating ideal com- post. Gardeners can also obtain liquid fertilizer through a tap at the bottom of the can. Gardeners say the device is efficient, clean and odorless. Users do not have to touch the worms, Shelton said. One' just dumps them in and lets them go to work. Councilwoman Jean Watt, another EQAC member, bought a Composting bins are available ' at cost from the Oasis Gardening 1 Club. The 7 a.m. crash tied up rush· hour traffic for a short time and left the bumpers of all three cars damaged, according to CHP Officer Dan Lyons. The injured man, whom Lyons identified as Marek Minecki, was taken to Fountam Valley Hospital for treatment of back and neck pain. Lyons said Minecki was dri- ving his 1987 Jeep Cherokee m the fast lane 'when it was rear- ended by a 1991 Plymouth Acclaim driven by Vincent Demeyre, 43, of Mission Viejo. The impact of the crash forced Minedd's car into the rear of a 1995 Chevy Blazer dri- ven by David Womack, 37, of Huntington Beach, Lyons said. "(Demeyre) had been in lane No. 2, but the traffic started slowing down,• Lyons said. "So, he tried to buzz into the No. 1 lane because it was mov- ing at the time. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot C OSTA MESA -While an · offensive overhaul and rune returning starter:> have createa a groundswell of optimism for the 1995 campaign, Estancia High football coach John Llebengood isn't ready to start selling CIF playoff tickets quite yet. "l'm not saying we'll win every game, and I'm not saying we'll lose every game. H said Liebengood, entenng his 10th sedson at the Eagle helm. "But we will be competitive." Competing could be easier after adopting the double wing, suiashmouth runmng offense made famous locally by former Costa Mesa High Coach Myron Miller. Technically, the offense more accurately mirrors defending CIF Southern Section Division vm champion Bloom- ington High, which set a national single-season scoring record (880 points) en route to a 14-0 record last fall. " I like this offense," said Estancia Offensive 1994 log 1 Cypress 19 31 I.A Quinta O 24 Calvary Chapel 6 14 Ocean View 3 0 ltoy 31 0 Univei3ity. 20 g Laguna Ri1h 21 12 Costa Meea 55 11 A.Ibo Niguel 14 20 l.Aguna Beach 22 Coordinator Art Perry. ·w e put everytlung in during the spring and swnmer and we were ready to go play (a game) the first week of practice." Offense has not been the Eagles' forte Ln the 1990s, having averaged just 12.1 points per game in five seasons since running the table with a l0-0 regular season in 1989, therr last CIF playoff appearance. "Our offensive line is as good as we've had in many, many years, and the backs are as good as we've had since 1989," said Leibengood, who has assembled a gravity-friendly offensive front, which averages 6-foot, 252 pounds from tackle to tackle. The offense may need to keep the scoreboard operator busy to cover for an inexperienced defense, which returns only two starters in first-team All-Pacific Coast League safety Frough Jahid and senior outside linebacker Jeremy Osso, who collected 3.5 sacks as a junior. Jahid, who split time offensively between quarterback and running back last fall, will likely flank returning first-team all-leaguer Bachy Gonzalez at wingback. Jahid will also back up junior signal caller Jeff Perry, who started several games last year. Jahid (6-0, 185) averaged nearly 4 yards on 48 carries as a junior, including a 17 -carry, 117-yard nonleague perlormance against lfoy, while Gonzalez (4-7, 170) led all Eagle rushers with 777 yards on 147 carries (a 5.3 average). But with both Jahid and Gonzalez slated to start defensively, Uebengood plans to liberally shuttle in backfield replacements, including sophomore speedster James Dawkins (5· 11, 165) and junior transfer Taleni Tanielu (5-9, 170), who Liebengood said started as a sophomore at Santa Ana Valley. Senior Joe Flores (6-12, 200) returns at fullback and bas drawn raves from Llebengood for his ability to burrow for ha.rd yardage on traps up the middle, as well as lead block for the wings on the monotonous pitches off tackle. . Perry (5-11, 210) is also well-suited for the lead-blocking role bestowed upon all double wing quarterbacks and may also keep defenses honest with the pass. •He's like a pulllng guard with a good arm,• Uebengood laid. •we'll probably throw between five and 10 times a game, and they'll either be touchdowns or incompletions, • said Art Perry, Jeff's dad.
