The committee outlined its sug- gestions Monday during a study session for the Oty Council, which reacted favorably to most of the recommendations for the stretch of boulevard that parallels the Costa Mesa Freeway extension between 19th Street and Mesa Drive. "Ninety-nine percent of the ideas I really like," Councilwoman Sandra Genis said. "I'm a little concerned about the suggestion of putting in a dual left-tum lane at the 19th and Newport intersec- tion." The council also discouraged a propos- al to expand the city Redevelop- ment Area to include the portion of the boulevard targeted for revi- talization. But council members encouraged the committee to pur- sue a number of other options detailed in a report distributed during the meeting. Some of the proposals include encouraging motel owners to take credit card imprints from their guests or require payment by credit card only to weed out "non- creditable " individuals. The committee also suggested fonning a business improvement district to help fund prtvate securi- ty, lighting, informational signs and advertising. Other measures the committee will pursue include: • Incentives that encourage motel owners to convert their properties into senior housing. • Establishing a moratorium on new motel openings. • Charging a fee to motel guests who are responsible for "excessive· police calls. So, after Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa and Estancia won, and Newport Harbor lost in last week's openers, here are a few observations: • lbe Corona del Mar High boosters may want to remove the question mark on the inquiry hovering over the cover boys on last week's program: Cd.M 's Greatest 0 -Wne Ever? The veteran group, nicknamed the •Five Crowns" line, paved the way for five first-half rushing touchdowns by junior tailback Tom O'Meara. And this despite the first-half absence of returning starter Kevin Stuart, sidelined until the third quarter for disciplinary reasons, while fellow senior Ryan Nelson stepped in. Nelson and Stuart were joined on the artistic cover by Richy Nichols, Jeff Bogdan, Nick Schaumburg and Tw Goode. • O'Meara, making his varsity starting debut, was apparently better prepared to deal with the Marina High defense than with the handful of reporters interested in inquiring about his record-setting performance at game's end. "I saw him asked one question that could have taken about four sente nces to answer, and he used about four words," CdM Coach Mark Schuster said. With a rare combination of Speed and strength. and the featured role behind the aforementioned talent in the trenches, it appears O'Meara will have plenty of chances to refine his interview skills. • Kudos to the CdM boosters for producing their best game program ever. Stocked with color photos, detailed player biographies, and some rather amusing photo captions (the lower right comer of page 51 was duly noted), the publication tops many collegiate efforts. • One CdM program photo identification, headlining a shot of uniformed seniors and cheerleaders on a yacht against the backdrop of Newport Harbor with "KINGS OF THE HARBOR," will. no doubt, find its way onto bulletin board of · Back Bay rival Newport Harbor.
