"I love working with all the people. It's a lot of h111 for me," said Amaya who was working !us first Thanksgiving wtth the Soup Kitchen Thursday. I By comparison, Five Feet Too's Michael Chang is a Soup Kitchen veteran. Chang had been active with Share Our Selves. Eventually, he lea.med that the Soup Kitchen needed help as well and decided to pitch in. For the sixth year, Chang and his employees held a park- 111g lot party Tuesday while they cooked the turkeys. "It's rewarding to be able to help out Merle here." Chang said. Newport Pier merchants struggle for business under winter's gloom • Observers say shopping malls draw customers away and pier businesses need to target locals as well as tourists in order to survive. "We try to do a lot of business during the tounst season to cover for the winter season, but it's still tough." said Jess Bingaman, a manager for l 0 years at Peny's Pizza on the boardwalk. The pizza shop's clientele dropped froµi an average of 400 customers a day in the summer to 30 a day in the winter, Bingaman said. ..
