Judge Marvin G. Weeks demed a motion to dismiss all four claims outlined in the lawsuit filed in Orange County Superior Court last month by Bob and Risa Grou.x. In the suit the couple claim their evil nghts were violated; they were illegally dJ.saiminated against; they suffered emotional distress; and they were slandered when they went to the popular Newport Beach dealership in August. Thomas Gibbs, the attorney representing the Grouxs, was ecstatic at the decision and is eager to take the case to trial. •Assuming the facts we allege are true, then we state a valid claim under the Civil Rights Act," Gibbs said Monday. "It's a big, big victory." The couple was planning to buy a pair of Mercedes Benz cars from Fletcher Jones Motor Cars lo celebrate a successful business deal and the birth of their first child. But the salesman, Jim Good, who would not accept the pnce they were willing to pay, reportedly said to the couple as they left, "You're not Jewish! While City Hall insiders had speculated that Debay migpt gather enough votes among her council colleagues to win the Mayor's gavel, the council decreed otherwise Hedges won his second term by a unanimous vote. Each posi· bon will serve a one year tenn. In a separate action, the coun- al voted · to give Debay a second term as Mayor Pro Tem -the councilmember who represents the city in the Mayor's ·absence. There were no other nominations for either seat. The vote assures that Council· woman Jean Watt will complete two terms on the city council without serving as mayor. Watt, who was Mayor Pro Tem in 1994, bad asked the council to elect her as mayor last year after former Mayor Clarence Turner left the council. A system of rotating tbe Mayor Pro Tern into the Mayor's seat allows councilmembers to serve as Mayor without being forced to politicking, Watt said at the time. It's all part and parcel of Cos- ta Mesa's desire to pull out of the Orange County Library Sys- tem and upgrade the resources available to residents. ·one o{ the goals the City Council set for this year was to provide better library ser- vices to our residents,• Mayor Joe Erickson said Monday. ·we'd like more hours, better reference materials and a larger selection of resources." Costa Mesa officials have been talking with Newport Beach officials in hopes of join- ing forces. However, nothing bas p_onned out on1haU:ront. yeL ·1 think right now the ball is in their court, " Erickson said of the negotiations with Newport. "We've been working in good faith with them, But, i1 that doesn't work out, we need to have other options." And that's where the com- mittee comes in. Erickson said the members will research other ways to • improve Costa Mesa's library services and speak with offi- cials from other neighboring communities to gauge their interest in merging resomces. •And, one of the th,ings they'll be watching is the COWl- ty's report, due out in March, that outlines their proposal for streamlining the county's ser- vices,• Erickson said. The nine-member committee will also assess the current status of resources to detennine if the materi- als are up-to- date and, suf - ficient, par-· ticularly for Costa Mesa's student pop- ulation. When my sister, with whotn I lived, came home, I went to pick up my new pet to show . her. Unfortunat~ly, he, or she, had gnawed a hole in the car- ton and disappeared. For soine reason I didn't tell I my sister about my almost pet. That was a good idea because It happened shortly after I arrived in Balboa in 1921. I was about 9 or 10 years old. It was ~ South Seas movie and was being made on the beach just east of the Balboa pier. The whole town turned out to watch. Looking back, I think it was about some dastardly blackbird- ers, white men who kidi:iapped natives to work on plantations run by other white men. Finally, the boat turned over in mid-air and landed bottom- up at \he foot of the wave, .... which broke on-the boat and the men. For some reason, none of the men drowned or were even lturt. However, that same wave had caused the schooner to turn over on its side. Then the real fun began r we began to have nuce. Boy, did · we have mice. · The white men in the movie were a scruffy bunch. They all needed shaves. They als_o...all _ carried rifles. With these rifles they kept shooting some black men who were made-up to look like island natives. The black men all carried spears that they threw at the white men without much success. However, when the white men shot at the black men, the black men fell down and died qllite dramatically. Then to my surprise, someone would yell, ·cut" and the dead black men would get up and wander over to a refreshment stand and drink colas. Just oH shoi:e was a black. two-masted schooner. After the white men had shot all the black men, their next job was to row d boat out to the schooner. Unfortunately, the surf had PLUG IN . All kinds of stuff began to float ashore. Caroi Stocker, the district's executive director of business ser- vices and auxiliary operations, said no public agencies have yet expressed an interest in the school, which currently houses Newport-Mesa's alternative edu- cation center. Stocker said converting Monte Vista to an elementary school is still on the table. The school board has sched- uled several study sessions in January to review the distnct- wide overcrowding problem. But at the same ti.me, the distnct is moving forward with the prelinu- nary steps to sell the school. The Costa Mesa City Counctl will review the zone change request next week and decide whether to pass it along to the planning com.mission, said Michael Robinson, a seruor city planner.• Monte Vista was appraised in May, but Stocker declined to divulge the fair market price because of potential negotiations with public agencies.
