preschool class at St.
Joachim's in Costa Mesa
helped make the holiday
wishes of the children at the Orange-
wood Home for Abused Children a
reality on Thursday. The pupils used
money raised at a parent-sponsored
bake sale to buy 14 toy tricycles for
Orangewood. Above, Lembke and
her pupils use homemade wrapping
paper to get the toys ready for deliv-
ery. At right, pupils Stephanie Burci-
aga and Cory Turner hoist a finished
package.

Elementary brings
· hiStory to life
Harbor View School's sixth
grade students spent the past
three months planning,
researching, interviewing and
writing their living •oral history•
reports, which were written
about a relative, a family friend
or a neighbor. The adult who
was interviewed bad to be at
least fifty years older -Olan the
student interviewer. Each stu-
dent asked questions about their
interviewee's childhood and
education, about inventions that
were created when they were
younger And which of those
inventions did they like or enjoy
the most. They also questioned
their cultural surroundings and,
in general, •What was it like liv-
ing back then so long ago?" The
students focused on the differ-
ences in lileStyles and upbring-
ing compared to today.
After compiling their answers,
the students recorded their obser-
vations and expressed their feel-
ings about how hard, and in
many ways, bow inconvenient
life seemed back then.
Sixth grade teachers, Mrs.
Scottia Evans and Mrs. Sharon
Hanington, believe their students
learn so much more about the
"yesteryears• and their own roots
and origins through the inter-
viewing process. Many of the stu-
dents gained a greater sense of
appreciation for the things
around them and agreed that
times have, for the most part,
changed for the better.
On Dec. 7 the interviewees
were honored with an afternoon
tea, during which the students
read poetry, participated in a
musical presentation and served
refreshments. The program
included a medley of 1930s and
1940s songs. Laughter, fun and
sage advice were shared by all
as the interviewees visited with
the students and their teachers
and parents.

Embezzled exotic · rugs
found in Corona del Mar

Persian rugs from three local busi-
ness owners and a resident who
unknowingly purchased them
from a Los Angeles con man who
peddled the carpets as lnr away as
New York and Germany.

Margate Place residence Thursday
at 9 a.m. on a quest for the exotic
rugs embezzled by a Los Angeles
man from bJs West Hollywood
employer, Los Angeles County
Sheriff's Sgt. Art Lucas said.
Authorities confiscated 28 of
the missing rugs here, wrapping
up an investigation that begal'l
last month in West Hollywood
Correction
Alireza Kahatimia, 29,
promised his employer, the Nairn
Brothers Persian and Oriental
Rug Company in West Holly-
wood, tbat be had several clients
to whom he could sell the expen-
sive rugs, Lucas said.
. Believing Kahatimia had legit-
imate sales possibilities, his
employer allowed him to take
more than 30 rugs worth abovt
$300,000, Lucas said. '
But after five days with no word
from Kahatirnia and no money
from rug sales, the employer grew
suspicious and realized he had
been ripped off, Lucas said. The
employer called police on Nov 25,
and after an investigation Kahatir-
nia was arrested Dec. 6 on charges
of grand theft, Lucas said.
Kahatirnia allegedly sold the
rugs to customers in Newport
Beach, Hollywood, New York and
Germany without giving his
employers the profits, Lucas said.
Kahatimia eventually told
authorities where the rugs were
and most of them have been
recovered, Lucas said.

at it again. The energetic Lincoln
Elementary School teacher was certi-
fied several months ago by the newly devel-
oped National Board for Professional Teach-
ing Standards and now is helping up-and-
coming teachers prepare for the same inten-
sive test. I Ratfield coached eight Orange County
teachers -five from Newport-Mesa -for
the test several months ago. Their test
results won't be available until July, 1996

Newport Boulevard Thur day
afternoon and threatened to hoot

give him money -an order the
clerk couldn't refuse.
At 3:40 p.m. Thursday a man m
his 20s walked mto Subway Sand-
wiches at 1966 Newport Boule-
vard and told the male clerk to
give him all the cash in the regis-
ter, police said. The robber then
said, 'Don't be stupid or I'll put two
bullets m your head,' Costa Mesa
police Sgt Allen Huggins said.
The victim, who didn't see a
weapon, o~ed the order and
gave the thief an unknown amo\lllt

"The opportunity to play in
college does drive me,• Verhulst

bor boys basketball team m a sec-

Newport was able to make
some nice drives down the lane
for layups throughout the game,
but most of the Sailors' other
offensive plays fizzled.
The Sailors trailed 8-2 after
one and Cypress upped that lead
to 18-10 at the half, on the
strength ol 14 points from their
senior leader Chad Boberg.
Boberg bas been averaging 27
poinls a game, and now needs 13
points to tie the school career
scoring record.
Newport fought tenaciously,
but could manage only 33.3%
from the. field on 12-of-36 shoot-
ing. That just isn't going to get it
done on most evenings.

the .500 mark and actually play a
team that wasn't ranked in the
Orange County preseason Top-10
poll in a game with something at
stake.
