The opulent Christmas Boat
Parade of Lights, as gaudy and
breathtaking as a chain of jewels
pulled around the harbor, is the
final refinement in a series of har-
bor entertainment that started
with a gondola and a Japanese
lantern.
Eighty-seven year ago, John
Scarpa, who had brought his
gondola to Newport from Venice,
California, took a group of visi-
tors from Pasadena on a ride
around the harbor on a warm
swnmer evening.
He decked out his gondola
with Japanese lanterns for the
trip. It was an instant hit and
one that Scarpa planned to
improve upon in the coming
months. So on July 4, 1908, the
first lighted boat parade set sail.
It consisted of Scarpa's gondola

lowed by an hour-long fireworks
display from Udo Isle. It was the
last parade until Gov. Earl War-
ren held the place of honor in Uie
lead boat in 1946.
But by 1949, the city discontin-
ued ·the event. Newport Beach
streets could not handle the
added traffic dwing the busy
summer tourist season.
Since 1946, the Newport
Chamber of Commerce and city
employees had been sailing
around the harbor in The Float-
ing Christmas nee, a barge
strung with lights and carolers
who sang to recorded music as
they were pulled by a tug boat.
This was very popular and the
Balboa Ferry was pressed into
service after the barge nearly

nated Water Parade, with judges and prizes
for the best decorated; by 1915, there were
40 launches, canoes and rowboats vying for
prizes and thousands of V1Sitors lined the
shores to watch.
After the dredging of the harbor in 1936,
the annual event attracted more than 100
boat entries as well as elaborately decorated

Despite lean times, city .employees' pockets deep

NEWPORT BEACH -The county b4.nk-
ruptcy and a lean budget year did not cui'b the
generosity of city employees here when the
annual United Way campaign rolled around.
During its recently-completed campaign,
jhe city collected $48,550 for United Way,
among the largest contribution from any
Orange County city this year. The donation
also netted the city a Silver Certificate award
from United Way of Orange County.
Although final campaign figures have yet
to be compiled. United Way officials say that
Newport Beach will almost certainly top the
list. By comparison, neighboring cities of Cos-
ta Mesa. Irvine and Santa Ana railed $23,000,
$16,000 and $26,300 respectively.

defensive effort of Laguna Hills after
the Hawks' 49-33 triumph in Satur-
day's championship game of the Lady
Matador Classic at Bolsa Grande
High.
Perhaps that's because Du.kus did-
n't have to shoot over towering Hawks
center Tayyiba Haneef.
Haneef, a 6-foot-6 junior who bas
slam dunked in practice, creates a
rather imposing defensive skylme m

teammates shuffle actively around her

the game caused a scuffle between the two tea.ms, resulting in a five-
minute penalty play a disqualification for Zlmay, and two disqualifica-
tions for Jones and Bahler of Orange Coast for retaliation.

Orange Coast cross country honors bestowed
COSTA MESA -Orange Coast College runner Mike Hancock,
hom Newport Harbor High, Was' named the t'irateS'Uutstand.ing
Sophomore and Johann Appell, a product of Estancia High, won the
outstanding freshman honor at Orange Coast's team banquet lasf
week. Hancock was 24th at States, ~".... ering the four-mile Woodward
Park course in Fresno in 21:33, while Appell was 29th in 21 :30.
Coach Gordie Fitzel, who announced that 1995 was his final seii§on
as the Pirates' cross country coach, guided bis team to an 11th place
finish at the State Finals.
Other honors included most improved sophomore (Jim Rousseve)
and most improved freshman Oliker Vergara.
Sophomore Carrie Appell (Estancia) and freshman Jenny
McCreight (Newport Harbor) shared MVP honors on the women's
team. Most Improved was Christa Gonzales.
Austin hot ~n the slopes at NASfAR competition
ASPEN, Co. -Mitchell Austin, a Laguna Beach resident who has
been a physician at Fashion Island for the past 20 years, placed first
among all of California's 50-59 year-ol(l males in the public ski racing
program, Budweiser Challenge NASTAR.
Austin was ran)led against U.S. Ski Team member and 1994
Olympic gold medalist Tommy Moe, along with approximately 190,000
other recreational ski racers who participated in the 1994-95 Budweis-
er All-stars.
Skiers are ranked by state in one of SlX age groups, based on theu
single best race of the season.
Austin earned a season best handicap of 11 while skiing at Beaver
Creek, Co., which puts him 11 %. behind Moe's zero-handicap. '
