My assign- ment seemed simple enough: go to South Coast Plaza and talk to crazy shoppers battling the after-Chri.stmas crowds. What became the problem - and took more time than the actual assignment -was finding a small stall for my Honda CRX somewhere within a mile of the shoppers' paradise. It didn't have to be large - any nine-foot stretch of curb would do, as long as it wasn't painted blue, red or yellow. I had planned to park a good distance from the stores, in the last mall parking space if I had to, and walk from there. It didn't seem that far-fetched an idea. 12:30 p.m . Earlier in the day, I had attended a com- pany white elephant gift exchange. U I had come with this particular item, I'd be immortal by now. It was a ceramic candy dish in the shape of a Santa Claus head. The mouth is. an obscene ·o· and its white beard flares out to form the bowl. The bat- tery cables spill out where the chin would be, hidden when the dish sits at rest. And the dish talks. Any movement, no matter how slight, elicits a badly enunciated "Hol Hol Ho! We studied the box together and he showed me four bar codes, discounting the item from its original price of $29, all the way down to $12. The box was open, contained no protective covering and the dish was covered with dust Daniel \tltimatety said he'd part with it for $5 and I'll bet I could have bargained him even lower. All very amusing, I said, but if I had to listen to "Hol Hot Hol Meny Kithmu, • more than once in my home, f would chuck the thing out the first Qpen window. "It has an on/off switch,• Daniel begged. "You can turn off the noise.• The dish was an antique. Once the store bad purchased a whole crate-full of talking can- dy dishes for about $8 a pop. This was the last one and Daniel bad no idea bow long it had been there. "But look at this bar code,• he said. "That code is from 1983." I was sold. A huge grin spread across my face. "I'll tell you why I'm going to buy this," I said. "I'm a reporter with the Daily Pilot newspaper and I'm going to write a story about this dish.· A look of horror swept over his face. He looked at me as if I had suggested disemboweling his cat and stuffing it with mistletoe. •ob, you can't! You'd get me in such trouble,• Daniel said, •Why would you want to write about this?• It wasn't every day, I explamed, that a person discov- ered the world's tackiest item, that a store manager was practi- cally paying a customer to take it away and that the thing may have been on the shell for 13 years. This story had to be told. Now Daniel was a bit wor- ried. I'd have to talk with the store's corporate offices. Man- agers weren't supposed to dis- count items, etc. Would I please reconsider. Well, I wasn't prepared to get someone fired over Christmas (I'll leave such things to Orange : County). So I agreed not to identify the store or give Daniel's last name. My Christ- mas story became a column. We chatted some more I found tum ' quite personable. I took the dish home and I filled it up with M and M's. By Richard Dunn, Dally Piiot COSTA MESA -Corona del Mar High's Sea Kings, forever successful with its three·man tri· dngle offense, got even better with it Tuesday in the Daily Pilot Coast Classic pool-play basket- ball opener against Rialto. With Bnan Coleman, Adam Klinke and Darren MacDonald shooting from nowhere outside the paint, Cd.M shot a blazing 65% trom the field (26 or 40), as the Sea Kings (6-5) exhibited an offensive clinic for fast break- mmded Rialto, breakmg the Knights' full-court press throughout, and won easily, 72- 63, at Estancia High. After sinking 10 of 11 from the field in the third quarter to build their biggest lead of the game (56·43), the Sea Kings calmly put away the Knights (3· 7) at the free-throw line in the fourth, sinking 12 of 14. Cd.M, which plays Dana Hills today at 4:10 p .m. in pool play, finished 19 of 23 from the line, led by Klinke, who scored a sea- son-high 31 points, including 11 of 13 from the stripe, 9 of 10 m the final eight minutes. Klinke, a 6·foot·4 senior, also had nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks, while Coleman added 23 points, 12 boards and five assists. MacDonald had 12 points. "We've changed our offense against the zone," CdM Coach Paul Orris said. ·we had a three- man rotation, and we're still in a three·man rotation, but we're emphasizing our big guys. "Coleman played a huge game, and Brad Evans and Nick Friend played a good game in terms of taking care of the ball and getting us in our offense, and we got the ball where we want to get it in. Our scorers should be Klinke, Coleman and MacDonald."
