As Good As It Gets" at this winter's box office Although the monochromabc audience of Newport Beach appeared prediiposed to like the caviling humor and the occasion- ally believable pathos of the sttua- tions and dialogue, for me it often seemed forced, if not contrived. The basic setup of this sttcom, I mean movie, is that Melvin Udall (Nicholson), author of 62 books, lives in a high-rise dpartment building for the fairly rich and modetately famous, leaving 1t only to dine in the same restaurant, at the same table, each evening. Carol Connelly, played-with visceral palpability by Helen Hunt, is Udall's waitress and bare- ly tolerates his offensive behavior: But something in the music tells you that she will learn to. Simon Bish- op (Greg Kinn- ear), for the most part, functions as a living, breath- ing,.straight- line for Udall's verbal assail of non-straight men. And Bishop's dog, Ken Bucchi spurned by Udall at the beginning, is the thread that will tie them all together. . The cracks m the sidewalk that Udall obsessively avoids-are sym- bolic of what is most wrong with this film -everyone's motivation seems to fall between the cracks. From the outset of this varied tonal film, which is sporadically marked with poignant revela- tions about the hwnan condition by the consummate director (James Brooks) of character-dri- ven films like "Terms of Endear- ment" and "Broadcast News," it 1s obvious that there is but one direction it.can travel -the grddual huma[lization of Udall. My friend had the Zorba the Greek sandwich ~$5.75) served with chips and choice of green or fntit salad. The sandwich was tasty, with Greek feta cheese, Bermuda onions, olives, capers, tucumbers, red leaf lettuce and Roma tomato on sourdough bread. I had the half sandwich, half salad ($4) with four-cheese veg- gie sandwich apd Caesar salad . The four-cheei;e sandwich was substantial with four types of cheese and a plethora of vegeta-. bles. The Caesar dressing was tangy arid sweet -a real nice addition to the romaine lettuce, sJl!edded Parmesan cheese and herb croutons. Their other sandwich is fresh turkey or lean ham ($5.75) piled tugh on sliced wheat bread with lettuce, tomato, sprouts and cheese. All salads are $5.
