RICHARD KOEHLER I ™E lOS ANGELES TIMES A fatal automobile accident on Irvine Avenue ln Newport Beach left one Newport Harbor High teen dead and several others injured. A turn for the w orse • When a Blazer tilled witp Newport Harbor Hlgh School teens crashed on curvy Irvine Avenue in May, it was just the beginning of a tragedy that has affected an entire community. By Christopher Goffard, Daily Piiot I t began with fake IDs, booze and a souped-up Chevy Blazer hauling a cargo of blitzed-out teenagers who hailed from the high end of tqwn. If the truck bad made its final-sharp turn on Irvine Avenue m Newport Beach, the details of that night io May would have become only a forgotten footnote in the party annals of Newport Harbor High School. The curve was crueler than that, however: The Blazer rolled over and spilled bodies onto the pavement, killing one teen and leaving two others with serious brdlll damage Seven months later, every n~ce or the doomed trip -and the hours leading up to it -has undergone rrucroscopic public scrutiny. Yet whether the larger story points to the self-in.dulgence of pnvileged teens, the car.elessness of a single boy or defective city roads or-or all of the above - remains a potnt of fierce commu- Itity-wide contention. Jason Rausch, 18, was the sober designated driver or the 1989 Blazer as it wound aronnd lrvine Avenue carrying nine of his classmates in the first minqtes of May 23. The teens were on their way home from a party at a near- by park. Only two wore seat belts Four sat m the luggage' pit. Some were drunk. Authorities say Rausch was speeding between 60 and 67 mph in a 35-mph zone before the truck struck a curb and flipped. The owner of the Blazer, 18-year-old Donny Bridgman, was killed instantly. Dan Townsend and Amanda Arthur, both 18, suffered brain damage ' Hours before the crash, police had stopped the Blazer on Colleen Place and found three unopened su-packs of beer and one freshly opened, half-empty beer can. Police made the teenagers pour out their beer Instead of going home, howev- er, the teens went to a liquor store on Harbor Boulevard for more alcohol Why the crash proved to' be a mother lode of copy never need- ed much explaining. It was hard to find anyone at Newport Harbor High School who did not know someone, directly or indirectly, affected by the crash. Parents tho~ght, "It could have been my Kids." Clad in bathing suits, shorts and even a few wet suits, the gid- dy group took the Polar Bear Plunge near the Balboa Pier Thursday, kicking off the new year with a dip in the mild·tem· pered Pacific Ocean. The Polar Bear Club, started four years ago by Peninsula resi- dent Allen Cintron, was intended to be a parody of the East Coast version, where people brave ice and freezing temperatures to plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. Cintron, dressed as Father TI.me 1997, recited the Polar Bear Pledge from atop a lifeguard tower before stripping off his robe and leading the group into the Pacific as New Year Baby 1998. When he emerged, he quipped, "I cannot lie -it was warm." Those who took part in the event were as diverse-as their reasons for wanting to take the plunge. In no particular order, here are just a few: • Veteran Costa Mesa High track and field coach John Camey excusing himseU from an interview to go keep one of his runners from collapsing with post-race exhaustion. • Estancia High basketball star Sam Nelson's Teflon-smooth jump shot.. •Costa Mesa fullback Vmce Hamade's graVttatlonal defiance. • Newport Harbor High multi-sport star M.E Clayton's pleasant approachability. • Corona del Mar High guls soccer standout Lindsey Grubbs' boundl~ss energy. • The single-minded intensity beaming from the eyes of Newport Harbor home run king Joe Urban, wedged snuggling between.his tugged-down base- ball cap and the eye black that regularly topped his cheek- bones. • Estancia/community booster Jim Scott's hat. • Newport football lineman Derek Fox's cookie-eating grin. • Departea CdM baseball coach Joe Koh's postgaine humor and wisdom. • Costa Mesa guls basketball star Koo Kim's improvisational forays through the lane. • Newport three-sport star Danny Pulido's competitive sneer. • CdM softball pitcher Hayden Aley's focus. • Estancia basketball fanatic Jim Gleason's crumpled score sheet. • The loyal and opinionated Newport Harbor football boosters who perch themselves near the press box (•Everybody 8 SEE FAULKNE~PAGE 6 , MARC MARTIN I DAl.Y PllOJ Selby Schriber takes her second shot on the 18th hole on her way to winning the '97 Tea Cup. W th the end of the year come thoughts of glory, offbeat moments and tears from tragedies. Images of the smallest Little League all-star striking out 11 batters, Army's toughest quarterback marching around the Hyatt Newporter like a prince, and a no-name tight end from Corona del Mar playing in the Super Bowl remind us of a spo~·splendor 1997. While my list of nostalgia is topped by the inaugural Tea Cup Classic in midsummer, there were enough replay-worthy moments to compete with the Espys. It was a year that wasted no time warming up, though the firs\ bit of news got soaked in the pouring rain as a golfer named John Johnson clinched the Taco \. But who would've imagined after 23 years the treasured Newport Classic (the foriner Bing Crosby Southern} would see its final rowid? · Then came a former CdM freestyle swimmer, Jeff Thomason, lining up for the , Super Bowl's opening kickoff for the Green Bay Packers, then celebrating with guys like Brett Favre and Reggie White. In late January, there were leaks coming out of the Palisades Tennis Club about a certain Newport Beach facility hosting a Davis Cup tie m April. That is, if 1he U.S. could defeat Brazil in the first rowid. Jim Courier's heroics in February made sure the Palisades Club would host the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarterfinals. Fashion Island had never seen so much orange, while Andre Agassi fowid hls stroke and won two matches, including the clincher, but never revealed his • wedding plans. Two weeks after the Davis Cup, he Jllarried Brooke Shields. And no matter how hard officials from the United States Tennis Association tried, tennis fans here weren't going to act like some of the Brazilians on television. Everything seemed perfect in March for the Toshiba Senior Classic, especially the lush fairways and greens at NBCC. The Senior PGA Tour event swelled to epic proportions when, one day before St. Patrick's Day, Irish.man Bob Mwpby won a record rune-hole playoff against Jay Sigel with an unforgettable 80-foot putt on the two-tiered 17th green. Smiles ~ .. as beautiful as the spray cascading off the • waves that crash onto the beach, as inspiring as the sunset that sinks into the water throwing colors all over the sky. The year 1997 was the Year of the Smile. I thought that moving to Orange County and taking a job with the Daily Pilot would be great, partly because of the beauty of the place. I had no idea that the loveliness of the smiles radiating from the people who live here greatly outshined the allure of the coast. My first story at the Pilot introduced me to a woman whose last name has become REFLECTIONS --' ' - molly yanity synonymous with athletic success in the area -Dianne Pulido. After being named the Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year as she paced the Orange Coast College women's basketball team, Pulido's smile could be heard over a phone. Did you even know that smiles make a sound? They do. They resonate in the excitement one reveals when describing her happiness, her hopefulness and her conquests. The smiles .kept coming and they continuously reminded me of the reason I am here, the reason coming to work is fun, the reason why this is my career. Leah Braatz-Cochrane's smile was loud when she told about her third All-American season as the star catcher (or Arizona's national championship softball team. The Estancia High graduate's smile was even louder w hen she told about her one-year old son, who was born during her redshirt season. The smiles of Newport Harbor's freshman Amy Murphy and Corona del Mar's Kawi.ka Tarayao and Rob Williams made a day at a swim meet seem more like a day at an amusement park.
