By Philip Bonney, Daily Pilot NEWPORT-MESA -Teach- ers in the Newport-Mesa school district will soon be queried by union officials on how they feel about Gov. Pete Wilson's latest AROUND TOWN proposal to increase 1he number of instructional days in Califor- nia's public schools. · School districts are now required to provide 180 days of instruction. A provision in the law, however, allows teachers to take up to eight staff develop- mentor "in-service• days within the 180-<iay framework for train- ing. Wilson's latest proposal would require that all 180 days be spent solely on instruction, but would also provide $350 mil- lion to reimburse local school districts that would be forced to re-negotiate teacher contracts - and find additional calendar days for their teachers to train - under the new law. •1 think it's an excellent plan.• said Newport-Mesa school board member Judy Franco. •I'm delighted that '"'rather than just taJking about it, there appears to be money for the program. Before the fans could blink, Ward was on the line sinking his game-winning free throws. "This just goes back to presea- son. We played Estancia, which played a zone.
