Then in September, the city towed away the four •vmtage• Cadillacs, which Soffer had left parked in his driveway. The council had hoped Soffer would accept a settlement offer that would have required him to reimburse the city $10,500 for towing and storage fees and plead guilty to violating the court order . . By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -Costa Mesa High girls basketball coach Len Whitacre has resigned, citing health concerns and what he viewed as being an outsider In the program since his arrival two seasons ago from Villa Park. ~1 simply never felt at hom e while coach- ing at Mesa,• said Whitacre, replaced by assistant Sbontel Sberwoold, who guided the team du,ring Tuesday's 55-49 Pacific Coast League loss to visiting University . "Having left a program I helped establish (Villa Park), to go to a program that was very well-established, proved to have been a dif. ficult transition. Not only did every game seem to be an away game, bu t every practice seemed like an away practice. I told the play- ers (Monday) that I felt like an uninvited guest, or an odd uncle, perhaps.• Whitacre said the disappointment over Thursday's 40-36 loss at arch-rival Estancia, ~&u~- -C.L.-...1.U'l.tu.Lo autb~)' assistant Cindy Vyskocil, had nothing to do with bis deci- sion. He did admit, however, that the reaction of some play- ers and parents to the postgame incident Len Wb.ltacre added to what be perceived as a lack of support from within the program. Whitacre said )le had also been battling illness lately and was concerned that contin- uing to coach with a persistently sore throat may have damaged bis voice. · "I was in bed all day before the Estancia game and I went to the game with a 103- degree temperature,• said Whitacre, who will begin a writing project he planned on beginning next year, when he planned to take a year off from coaching. "I'm also looking forward to watching some of my former (Villa Park) players finish their high school careers," said Whitacre, . who attended the Spartans gme Tuesday night at El Modena. Both Sherwood and Mustangs Girls Ath- letic Director Pat Leahy acknowledged the timing of the move was less than ideal, head- ing into only the fourth of 10 league games and less than a month before the postseason is scheduled to open, Feb. 14. "That's probably true," Leahy said of the inopportune timing. •But the program will go on and Shontel and Cindy will coach the team.• Sherwood said she would make only minor changes m order to ease the transition, but her schedule as a Newport Beach police officer (4 p m.-2 a.m.), will require some 6 a.m. practices. Sherwood, a Division ill Kodak All-Am~ ican guard at Pomona College, built consis- tently sparkling records on the junior varsity level at Estancia and Mesa, where she left the JV after three seasons to join the varsity staff this year. This is her first varsity head coaching position. Mustangs succumb, 55-49 •Short-handed Costa Mesa girls fall to defending PCL champs, whq rely on · se~ Lyz Day three-pointers . By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -Tuesday night's Pacific Coast League girls basketball game with visiting Univer- sity High provided a little too much adversity for even the tough-willed Costa Mesa High Mustangs to overcome. Playing the first game without Coach Len Whitacre, who resigned Monday, and dealing with the unavailability of three other players due to illness, the loss of two more key players to injury and fouls, as well as some deadly three-point shooting from Uni's Lyz Day, contributed to the Thojans' 55-49 triumph. The loss, Mesa's second straight in league, dropped the Mustangs to 11-9, 2-2 in league, into a tie for third with the Thojans (11-7, 2-2). Leading 25-21 at halftime under the guidance of promoted assistant Sbontel Sh erwood, the Mus- tangs rode a 10-2 run late in the third quarter - spurred by junior point guard Koo Kim -to a 35- 34 edge heading into the final eight minutes. But with stalwarts Corri Lurmann and Kelly Chapin out with illness and Chantay Peyton (six points and five rebounds) sidelined with a sprained ankle early in the third period, Day and the Thojans rallied for a 45-41 lead with 5:24 left. Kim, who finished with 13 points, fouled out about a minute later, and the defending league champions secured the victory . Day bit 8 of 11 field-goal attempts, including 7 of 10 from three-point range. The 5-foot-4 junior gucmi drilled 6 of 7 second-half attempts from tbreedom, to finish with 23 points . •Luckily Lyz came up big," said Uni Coach Bob Bernal, who bad seen Day score only 14 points combined in the previous three league games. Chanel Anderson led the Mustangs with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Katie Grogan (sev- en rebounds and four points}, and Kristina Watan- abe (six points and four boards) also contributed: Kim chipped converted two offensive rebounds for baskets, drilled two free throws and assisted Grogan's layin after a steal to take command of the game late in the third q\larter.
