By Evan Henerson , Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -With the March 26 ballot fast approaching, the City Council sent a message Monday to any- one wonied about the excessive growth of John Wayne Allport: Reject Measure S. The Measure S initiative would nullify Measure A, which Orange County voters approved in November 011994. Measure A calls for setting aside a portion o1 the El Toro Marine air station for commercial airport use after the base closes in 1999. But several South County dties and res- idents say they don't want an air- port in their bar-kyml~ have gath· ered enough signatures to place Mea- sure S on the March 1996 ballot. John Hedges By a 6·0 . vote, the council passed a reso- lution formally opposing the kill the proposal at the ballot. "I feel compelled to speak out on this proposed resolu- tion," said Councilman Tom .Edwards .. a longtime proponent of curbing John Wayne's expansion. •This is quite important not only to the city but to the region, ·when you consider that 56,000 jobs would be generated (by establishing a commercial airport at El, Toro.)" The city's-resolution points out that Measure S would pro- hibit any reuse at El Toro; that the measure would keep the base in government ownership for 20 years; and that John Wayne Airport could not meet the future public demands as the county's population contin- ues to grow. •People haven't beard a lot about this yet," said Mayor John Hedges, who urged local resi- dents to turn out for the vote in March. •(Measure S) is a terri- ble thing for Newport Beach and for the county at large." In other business Monday, the council unanimously approved reviving an ordinance, whicb limits to 24 hours the amount of time citizen$ can park their recreational vehicles on public streets. Residents can gain an exemption of up to 72 hours, however, by telephoning the Police Department, the ordi- nance states.
