taking any chances.
"Richard, could you start my
car for m e when 1 leave?"
Edwards said .

Her persistence paid off. By
linking the El Toro annexation
lo the Bonita C anyon annexa-
tion issue, l rvm e Mayor Christi-
na Shea got the city of Newport
Beach to give her a guarantee
that th eir new employee, former
county supervisor Don Salatarel -
li would not interfered with
Irvine's plans to annex the El
Toro Marine Base.
But even the Iron Lady of
Irvine has her soft spot. Speak-
ing to the Daily Pilot earlier this
week she complained of her
harsh treatment in the media:
'Tm really a very reasonable
person." she said.
A NOVEL EXPRESSION
C areer criminal and alleged
hit man Patrick O'Neill is appar-
ently a big fan of the adventure-
novel genre.
At a preliminary h earing in
Municipal Court this week, held

sch emed to kill a Capito la man
for cash. the gravely voiced
defendant spent breaks chatting
amicably with lawyers.
At one point he joked about
the word "reconnoiter," which
was uttered by the police infor-
mant as he described during tes-
timony how O 'Neill allegedly
planned the hit.
The word "reconnoiter" is on
every other page of adventure
novels about characters like Mac
Bolan and Dirk Pitt, O'Neill said.
ln fact, he said, you can tell
how long a guy's been out of
prison based on how he pro-
nounces it.

Fair is still five months away, but
officials are aJready gedrulg up
for the many fru.r ti.me contest..
. spotlighting creabve works of
art, delicious reopes and wacky
collections.
Compebtion handbooks will
be mailed out in late February
and entry forms are due May 27,
although some contest deadlines
may vary. Anyone who entered
a contest last summer will auto-
matically receive a hdndbook.
Competitive departments
include fish and reptile, Oower
and garden, landscapes, live-
stock, gems and minerals. home
and hobbies, visual arts, com-
mercial wine, farm and gMden
youth, 4-H/Future Fatmers or
America, collections and memo-
rabilia, homemade beer and
wine and journalism.
The theme of th.is yedf's fair
-set for a 17-day run from July
10-26 -is "We're 111 the Pink,·
a salute to the color pmk and the
fuchsia, the official Oower of the
city of Costa Mesa.
Ultra-low flush toilets
now available
During the month of Febru-
ary, the Mesa Consolidpted
Water District headquarters will
be the place for local water cus-
tomers in search of ultra-low
flush toilets.
Mesa and the Municipal
Water District o1 Orange County
have joined forces to help con-
serve water by giving Mesa cus-
tomers an easy way to replace
their older toilets for new low-
llow models.
Ultra-low flush toilets are far
more efficient and use much less
water than older models, on
average just 1.6 gallons of water
per flush compared to up to sev-
en, officials said.
For the next month, water
efficient models will be available
through Mesa at a subsidized
price of $40, which includes toi-
let bowl, seat, installation hard-
ware, a low-flow shower bead
and a hose-end sprayer.
' To buy a toilet. Mesa cus-
tom~ should bring their Mesa
customer number found on the
water bill and a •rough in esti-
mate" -the distance from the
wall tp the bolts securing the toi-
let to the ground -to company
headquarters, 1965 Placentia
Ave.
The toilets will be available
through the end ol the month on
Thursdays and Fridays from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

schools. Of 300 surveys, about 150
were returned., Newsom said. Each

T he team had gotten them to this point.
Everyone was scoring, rebounding,
forong turnovers. Within the confines
of the reverberating •Pit• on Southern
California College's campus, the game had
come down to one possession, though.
It wouldn't be the team that would score
the game-winner. It wouldn't be the team that
was left with the instruction to ·create.•
It was Adam Dzierzynski who would get
the call, he who would come through.
The 6-foot point guard dribbled to the right
of the key, cut in, suspended himself into the
air as two Cal Baptist defenders came at him
and he let the shot go. The ball seemed to
move in slow motion, the speed in which
everything dramatic seems to take place.
As it sliced through the net before the
background of the horn, and the rambunctious
crowd and the lights on the seoreboard
changing to read 100-98, Ozie~~·~
eyebrows raised and a look of horrific JOY
distorted his face.
•That was such a fun game to be in,• the
Daily Pilot Athlete of the Month later says.
Of course, it hasn't always been fun -the
game of basketball for Dzierzynski, b~t as the
senior looks back, it has been something that
keeps drawing him back, drawing him in ...
drawmg him closer to the heart in his own
chest.
1Wo years ago, Dzierzynski was as far
away from basketball as one cbuld get
He had left Chapman College, where he
bad played for two seasons, and ~as
traveling the world. He was looking for
sometlting.
The islands of Hawaii and Fiji. as well as
Australia, provided the ground where he
walked, but his path was unknown.
MI was burned out on basketball and
school. I needed a year off to decide what to
do with my life,• he said.
He explored, found himself in Thailand and
other Asian nations, and was doing it alone.
•1t was really a good time for me to grow
up. l realized I was taking so much for gr-anted
... basketball and school.•
As he searched the world for his soul, some
things were coming together. One of his
coaches at Santa Margarita High. Todd Dixon
had moved on to an assistant position at sec
and expressed interest in the possibility o:f
Dzierzynski becoming a Vanguard.

but he didn't seem interested in our level.•

when (Adam) returned from his hiatus and we

Reynolds said that Dzierzynski's biggest

After surgery in April and a
summer of physical therapy
and rehabilitotion, Dzierzynski
is on a streak more torrid than
the one ·he left last March.
Through 22 games, he is
averaging 17 .8 points per game
and leads the GSAC with 158
assists. With over seven dishes
a contest, he tops that category
by nearly two assists per game.
He had a season-high 33
points in a loss to Christian
Heritage. That same night he
also turned in six assists. Less
than two weeks later, he led
the Vanguards to a GSAC win
over Fresno Pacific with 26
points and 11 assists.

for him and his talents,•
Reynolds said. •He gets the
ball to the right people and is
as good in the open court as
anyone we've had here.•
Dzienynski says it is the
strength of his team that make
him look so good.
"The guys I'm surrounded
by are so good. Guys like Justin
(Mclntee), Terrence (Wilborn).
Dennis (Keane) and Rod
(Scheuerman). We just work
together so well,· he said.
At the week's end,
Dzienynski and crew were
riding a four-game winning
streak after handling Point
Lorna Nazarene at home.
The win boosted sec to
15-9 and 4-2 in conference.

team, but we're starting to play
well,• he said. "My goal is to
make the national tournament,

conference or winning the

rough, but it is one of those
conferences that is truthfully
strong all the way through.

But when it comes down to
those thrilling games that is
making Dzierzynski and his
teammates stars at sec, the
point guard said that he hopes
those continue.
vwe know that fans come
out to see exciting plays and
dunking and running," he said.
"That is sec basketball.·
And sec is a place, that
after all the searching, is where
Dzierzynski finds himself the
happiest.
Though he isn't sure if he
will further pursue his
education, a professional
career overseas or employment,
he will marry his high school
sweetheart in June.
He is also in love with his
school.
•The basketball competition
is great. The people that teach
and here, they're so supportive
of the team and really want to
see you succeed," be said.
The Vanguards continue
their hunt in the GSAC Tuesday
when the travel to ·Westmont,
then to Azusa Pacific Friday
