To the Editor After reading your article covering , the boys soccer match between New- port Harbor and Corona del Mar high schools, I feel that 1 must express my support for Coach Derek Lawther. Coach Lawther is currently coach- ing high school soccer for the first time. His soccer coaching background is unimpeachable with experienced coaching at virtually all levels of play. . He coached professional teams as well as assuming head coaching duties at Division I UC Irvine for 12 ye~. Whil~ at UCI, he was honored as a_W of the. e Coach Lawther showed an interest 111 continuing soccer at the high school level. Both the Athletic Director and Prin- opal recognized Coach Lawther's abilities and recommended his hiring. The Corona del mar Boys Soccer Booster Club was pleased to have a coach with such high credentials. · From the outset, be brought orga- ruzational skills and knowledge of the game to the program. He recognized glaring equipment and field needs that begged to be addressed even before a team was chosen. He personally set an example to raise needed funds to satisfy these deficienaes. Aside from these skills, Coach Lawther demands that his players give utmost respect to offiaals as well as opposing players. Parent spectators are cautioned not to comment negatively on any referee call. Coach Lawther bas brought a higher level of maturity, leadership and professionalism to the soccer pro- gram. Despite a losing record at Corona, and the fact that in the last 10 weeks of the season, CdM plays Top 10 Orange County teams eight times, the level of team commitment has never been greater because of the respect that Coach Lawther engenders. My son plays on the same club team as four starting players on the Newport Harbor soccer team. They are competitors now but are still good fnends. There is mutual respect. The Harbor players are talented and confident; reminiscent of the very successful Corona del Mar teams from the early '90s. Admittedly, there is (and always will be) a rivalry between the two high schools. However, to portray this as a vendetta fabricated by Coach Lawther (against Newport Harbor) simply is not true. In addition, implications that Coach Lawther fomented emotions are totAlly unfounded and to repre- sent otherwise is inaccurate. Sincerely, Steven f. Wetnitetn. M.D. Preltdent.
