A powerful winter storm that blanketed the entire California coast and hammered Newport: Mesa with blustery winds, heavy rain and chilly temperatures may have been enough to change even the most skeptical mind. It forced schools to close, flooded streets and caused trees to topple, created as many as five mudslides and tripped off power outages on at least three school campuses. One local even went for a ride on his Jet Ski down a flooded Bal- boa Boulevard. No doubt about it, Friday's drenching was not an average run-of-the-mill rain- storm. As of 4 p.m ., the storm had dumped 2.9 inches of rain on Newport Beach, according to the National Wedther Serv1ce, and water collected along curbs and in gutters to create a motonst's nightmare all over both cities. As thousands of cars were detoured off the highway and onto surface streets, a l<>g.Jam of autos formed and stretched for about a mile in each direction of the highway until officials reopened the stretch at 3 p.m. •SEE DELUGE PAGE A18 Merchants get the business in downpour By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot MARC MARTIN I DAlY PlOT Oscar Calles cuts down a tree from one of the two vehicle dam- aged by a landslide along Bayside Drive Friday afternoon. "aggressive surveillance." The therapy and surgery tables filled up, the others remained open. Curious. I opted for the therapy table because a very dear friend of mine was there. The age level ran from 50s to 70s. Experience levels ran from one fellow who had been diag- nosed just two weeks ago, to one who had been slugging it out for 14 years. There wasn't a dotterer in the bunch. If the disectse had been taking a toll, these fellows did- n't show it. They were sharp, vigorous and totally focused on prostate cancer in all its mani- festations, and on every con- ceivable form of treatment. One chap, who looked easily 10 years younger than his mid- 60s age, spoke so knowledge- ably I asked if he was a doctor. ON THE COAST fred • • martin "No," he grinned. "Ijust like to keep up with what's going on." Then he told the group about a new type of test for the prostate specific antigen or PSA-11. And about the medical center a t UC San Francisco, which is the only place on the West Coast where you can get an MRI called an endo-rectal proc- toscopy. And about, "A doctor in Century City named Lei- bowitz who recommends .... " He was encyclopedic, and the other men listened intently, hoping to find one new scrap of information that might, just aught, mean a breakthrough for them. They asked question alter question. Doubtless, they ask the same questions of every doctor they see. They just keep hoping for a better answer. When talk turned to prostate cancer's dreaded side effects, there was little reluctance. Most spoke freely of incontinence and impotence, and they churned out numbers like a mainframe. They compared PSA levels, one or the major diagnostic tools, and Gleason scales, which measure the aggressiveness of a cancer. One man told of once having a 38 PSA and a Gleason of 9, which means it was remarkable he was there at all. He had been diagnosed m 1984 and had surgery in 1985. "They opened me up, saw the cancer had spread to my lym- phatic system, so they just ~RA~-~ 1\iila Dolphin Safe -Packed in Water •No Salt • Wrth Salt REG. $1.99 Orgaidc Fmit Spread • Orange • Peadt • Bladd>eny • Reny • Dark Olm)' • Plum ·~ • Bluebeny ·~ REG. My PSA is now 7 .2, I'm on three dll- ferent meds and I bave no side effects whatever.• You could sense every man in the room feeling stronger, a little more confident. You knew they had to be thinking, hey, if he can get out of that mess, maybe I'm not so bad off after all. Another gent told of watch- ing hi& PSA score rise: 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 38. He began taking injections of a $600-a-shot drug called lupron every three to four months. His PSA is now 0.2. The others all but cheered. The villain of prostate cancer is the hormone that has caused problems for men since the beginning of time: testosterone. The concoctions used in hor- monal therapy are based on female hormones, primarily estrogen The estrogen shuts down testosterone production and the cancer starves. That's oversimplification, but it gives you an idea Progress against the disease is bemg made every day. Though the number of cases diagnosed annually has soared in recent years. the overall prognosis is that most men who are hit with prostate cancer will die with it, not of it. But you have to wonder what progress might have been made if men would go after their dis- ease with the same ferocity and zeal with which women have attacked breast cancer. If we guys can't get it done, maybe we should hire some smart, aggressive ladies to go out an·d lobby for us. We'd sure- ly have more than the paltry $100 IIlllbon the government has allotted for prostate cancer research thls yedr (vs. $500 mil- lion for breast cancer, $1.8 bil- llon for AIDS). Wmdows on the Bay may get reprieve school news • Norma Glover will ask colleagues to reconsider conditions slapped on bayfront restaurant, Lido isle residents tell coµncil to hold firm. By Jenifer Ragland, Datly Pilot NEWPORT BEACH-Another wmdow of opportunity may be opening for restaurant owner Scott Shuttleworth to conbnue operating his Manner's Mil0 busi· ness the way he has been for the past four years. Windows on the Bay will be back on the Newport Beach City Council agenda Monday m a motion to reconsider the previous councll acllon. That decision - made JUSl two weeks ago ~ slapped 40 new re ns on the restdurant. m g removing the bar from th outside patio area and stoppmg food service on the patio dt 9 p.m on week nights and 10 p.m. on weekends. The restaurant's patio had previously stayed open witil 2 a.m. "l have no problem with a great majority of the conditions," Shuttleworth said. "But there are a handful that are so restrictive and so unfair -if not illegal - they prohibit the functional use of our patio that the city approved for us to build and use, which we have done so in compliance for almost four years ... Elaine Weinberg, a Udo Isle resident, said she faxed letters Fri- day to each council member urg- ing them to stand by their previ- ous decision. She said noise from the restaurants on the other side of the bay -including Windows - not only disturbs residents, but will have a detrimental affect on Lldo Isle property values. "The City.Council was balanc- ing the equities between the rights of a good business commu- nity and the residents in an envi- ronment without noise pollution," she said. U approved, anotller public hearing on the matter will be set for Feb. 23, giving city officials more time to review the new con- ditions. •we have to have a balance between residential and business- es in the city,• Glover said. u1 vot- ed on the motion so I would have the ability to call it back up because if you don't vote with the majority, you can't call something back up.H Shuttleworth said he applied for the new permit in good faith £Es- when he realized the existing one had outdated conditions that did not apply to Windows on the Bay. His application came at the same time as mounting complaints from a group of Udo Isle residents about noise from various bay front businesses -particularly nearby Joe,'s Crab Shack. Glover said that is the reason she believes the council's decision was unfair. "I think we told a restaurant that we're going to impose condi- tions on you in case you create a problem, when it's almost that there hadn't been a problem," she said. "We came down hard on them because of a problem at another restaurant." Glover said she wanted anoth- er opportunity to work with Lido Isle residents and city staff to craft a better argument. She hopes to convince a majority of <(ity Coun· dl members Monday that the action they took two weeks ago was not the ,best solution for the community, but does not know if she can line up four votes. I know of no one, not one (and I have spoken with all of the immediate neighbors but one) who wants the horses to move. Ninety-nine percent of the time I don't even know the horses are there. The other 1 % Is when I see them, or someone visit- ing, point them out to say "Wow. you have horses in your neighborhood? How cool is that. Why all of a sud· den is this such a problem? I don't know but I suspect that those complaining ought to move to a stale association somewhere where they can complain about their neighbors' lawn being too long, or the house being the wrong color. My wife and I moved here because of the way it IS (not will be or is "supposed to be H} and anyone I have met who visits this area loves the way it IS. SUSAN TEMPLE'S LEGACY losses ( YOUNG LIVES It's always tragic when teens lose their life. And the Costa Mesa community felt that tragedy firsthand this week as friends and family of Alex Mojica and Geremie Austin gathered to say goodbye to the pair who were killed in a tragic automobile accident. BURNELL FORGEY This Newport Beach psychiatrist found himself in the spotlight last year after it was revealed that his roommate was "convicted child molestor James Lee Crummell. IRA ROSENSTEIN Lido Isle Airport opponents have ~splaining to do, correspondence By Richard Taylor Jr. I n the ever-contentious debate over El Toro. February is shaping up as endorsement month for rising property values and sale runways. Just thls week, two ma1or develop- ments have put to rest two of the air- port naysayers' most specious argu- ments. The first is that converting El Toro from its current status as a 50-year- old military air base to a state-of-lhe- art regional, commercial airport will somehow send South County homes values into a taU spin. The second is that El Toro runways -used last year alone by some pretty safety -conscious air- line passengers, including former Sen. Robert Dole (R- Kansas). fonner Rep. Jack Kemp (R- New York) and the raft of Secret Ser- vice and national press that accompa- nied them -are somehow unsafe . Last month, you comments in virtually every news outlet in this county, they've been arguing that the two major pilots associations believe El Toro's depar- ture corridor is unsafe for commercial traffic. Not surprising, safety is an area of great -and appropriate -concern for the flying public. And the authori- ty, recognizing it as a hot button issue, has criticized El Toro to the people they've polled, to people who've read the survey results, to readers of their popular anti-airport web slte and to inf onned newspaper and magazine readers and television watchers eround the country. Runway safety is no lightweight matter to any of us but it's a work- pleco issue for people who fly for a living. Talk about leading the witness. It should not come as a surprise that 59% said they would be "more like- ly• to oppose the airport. "We talked at halftime about the problems we've had durtng the third quarter of play this year, and we had wanted to avoid our typical letdown," Mesa Coach Erich Allen said. "We did a good job of handling their press in the first half, but their press in the third quarter really hurt us.• The Trojans (5-3, 13-9) started the second half with a 8-0 surge, How Newport Harbor beat Santa Margarita is also sUll open for debate. The Sailors, unranked in the county, have also this season defeated No. 2 Ocean View and No. 5 Magnolia. #What's amazing is that we didn't even play well,• Hirst said of Newport Harbor's 50-47 win over Santa Margarita, which fans were still buzzing about Friday night. "We shot 42.8% from the field and (Santa Margarita) shot 43.7%. I don't know how we did it." The Sailors did it to the Sea Kings with a defen- sive scheme that confused the hosts in the first half. After Gabriel's three tied the game in the first period, 6-6, Newport Harbor outscored the Sea Kings the rest of the first half, 24-3. Dustin Illmg- worth's short jump shot in the key with 2:52 remaining on the first-quarter dock gave the Tars a permanent lead, 8-6. Scott Archbold (six rebounds), Alan Li.moo (three boards, two steals and one aSSlSt in the first half) and Jameson had their moments of glory in the second quarter as the CdM crowd turneQ: qui- et. Jameson was 10 of 15 from the floor, but three of those attempts were blocked, so technically speaking he missed only twice. keyed by a Larry Johnson lay-m, a Johnson stea.1 and sl4m dunk. Justin Hunt's put-back basket, and lay-m off a Johnson feed to storm to a 45-29 lead. 'Jtavis Rice's three-point lhot ended the run, but University immediately came back to scorch Mesa with a 12·0 run, highlighted by back-to-back treys by pomt guard Eric Palmer, to go up, 57-32. The 1to1ans led by as many as 35 points in the quarter. Ryan Naff hit a trio of three- pomt shots and led Mesa with 17 pomts. Nathan Jones also was in double figure5 with 12. Palmer, on the strength of flve three-point shots, led all scorers with 26 pomts. John~on and Hunt each finished with 10. Jekeli (six points) finished with 11 rebounds (four offensive) and one steal. Hour biggest concern was that we might come out flat after Santa Margarita,• Hirst said. At Fletcher Jones Motorcars, we se rvice more Mer- cedes than any other dealership in the nation. That's because we provide services you won't find anywhere else. And we monitor prices to make sure we stay compe~itive. Over the last six years, we have h ad more than 278,000 service appointments. That service volume covers a lot of overhead. So when you negotiate · a purchase or lease agreement, we can be very accommcxfating. .. @~f-.IT~~~ 114 11s.JOO • noo ~BORE£~ www.fjmercede1.com • ®~.jc.
