With their objections, proposal opponents .sidestepped and side- ' tracked the issue, Riley said. "They got off the topic Of provid- ing emergency medical services,· Riley said Tuesday. "What was dis- cussed at that meeting was the pri- vatization of government services in general. Our proposal had no opportunity to be discussed. "There were no questions posed by (public safety committee) members. Other than the philo- sophical que$tion, we really don't know where our proposal stands." After more than two years of study, Riley was prepared to set the first phase of the plan in motion before Monday's meeting. ... The ,proposal calls for training additional firefighters to be para- medics and having the city take over services currently being pro- vided by a private ambulance company. Ultimately, all of the oty's fire you to yoga stations would be equipped with a city-operated paramedic Wlit, under the tenns of the proposal. The fire chief projects that by conducting these services ~in house,• the city will improve its emergency response times an<l save general fund revenue. But during the committee meeting "MOiiday, council mem- bers Norma Glover, Dennis O'Neil and Mayor John Hedges - who comprise the committee - did not send Riley's proposal to the full City Council for final con- sideration. Instead, the committee asked for additional review. City Fire Department employ- ees are trained in both fire and paramedic techniques. Hedges suggested emergency medical services might be evaluated to see if the private sector can pro- vide the services cheaper and more efficiently. That could. mean putting the entire system O\l.t to bid to private businesses, if that's what the city council decides. Riley was scheduled to meet with Hedges late Tuesday to determine exactly what direction to take.
