Taking a Louisville · Slugger to that El Nillo buSiness \ . I 've been reasonably good- natured about El Ni.no. After all, anyone who has swvived 40 winters in Chicago and north- ern Indiana can only regard the El Ni.Do hystena with a kind of bemused detachment. Up until now, that is. Now, meteorologists are • telling us that El Niiio is going to stick its thumb in our eye clear into the sununer, and that 1s sun- ply unacceptable. I can cope with a leaking roof or et dachs- hund built so low to the ground that every time we send her out to relieve herself in our saturated back yard she has to be toweled off before she can be socially acceptable in the house. I can deal with tenrus games being washed out weeks on end or coristant debris in our patio or having to put on a sou'wester to go outside and get the morning paper. A p1.ece of cake But one thing I will not tolerate rrom El Ni.no or any other human or nat- ural phenomena: the mucking up of the opening of the baseball season. Unacceptable. This was brought home to me Woman escapes major injury after attack LISTEN UP joseph n. bell with a kind of shattering clarity Friday. All of us received with our Pilot a couple of weeks ago an elaborate fold-out brochure can- onizing the multimillion-dollar face lift given Anaheim Stadium (I refuse to use either Edison Field or John Wayne Airport) over the past two years The brochure included a number to call if we wanted to join several upcoming tours of the new stadJum. · I called immediately and got a recordJng telling me that the Dis- ney organization all the way up to Michael Eisner was terribly sorry but the tours were all full. The people who made the list must have picked up the paper hot otf the presses and phoned in the middle of the rught. This distressed me because I've been a good and faithlul customer for 30 years. So I used a couple of connections and man- aged lo get with a small group given d private showing Friday You remember Friday; it was the day 1t didn't rain. The stadium area was chaotic, hundreds of workmen swanning everywhere. Nothing looked familiar. I came in the Katella Avenue entrance, as always, and became instantly disoriented. Ramps are now out in the open and painted a vivid green. The facade bears virtually no resem- blance to the old stadium My familiar rendezvous places have simply disappeared in a sea of brick and glass and concrete. Inside, Anaheun StadJum looks like a ballpark again instead of the grotesquerie that was visited on us when 20,000 seats were added to accommo- date an alleged NFL football team called the Rams. Once again, it is possible to see over the left field bleachers. There is also a grassy area in dead center held, the bullperis are in full view of the spectators, and the oulfield walls are interestingly irregular, promising some unex- pected caroms. In general, Mesa can leqally recover the cost of hanging notices on doors stating that water service will be shut off if payment is not received, plus postage for late payment notices mailed to homes and other costs, ottid.als said.
