Police are also investigat- ing whether the couple man- ufacture and sell drugs. Marlc Hammett -the-son of former mayor, councilman and reserve police officer Jack Hammett -was arrested along with bis wile, Kim Ham- mett, 31, and Bryan Dieson, 43, for allegedly cloning cel- lular phones, a felony which under federal law could carry a 20-year sentence, Costa Mesa police narcotic Sgt. Loren Wyrick said. The trio live in an unkempt house on 1953 Orange Ave. along with the Hammetts' two school-age children, who are under the care of the county's Social Services A!)ency while their parents are in jail, Wyrick said. Police detectives wrapped up nearly a year of watching the house and three months of developing information when they served a search warrant at the home at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Wyrick said. Once inside the house, police reportedly discovered the equipment and extensive computer records necessary for cloning cellular phones. The phone numbers are pirated from the airwaves and used until they are detected, then discarded for another number, Costa Mesa police Capt. Tom Lazar said. The computer records are currently being analyzed to access the financial damage the tno caused, Wynck said. All three are being held in Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail each. •It's not something taken lightly because the cellular phonP companies lose a lot of money,• said Wyrick, who added that companies could lose $1,500 to $3,000 per phone. Inside the house, police also reportedly discovered chemicals, glassware and equipment that could be used for the production of methamphetamine. In the backyard, which is littered with old cars and dis- carded junk, officers also found three holes, which may contain discarded chemicals. However, police will await chemical test results before pursuing illegal dumping charges, Wyrick said. The inhabitants of the house are notorious in the quiet, residential neighbor- hood for noisy brawls and suspicious activity at all hows of the day, police said. A prior gun shooting incident at the home also left bullet holes on the property, police said. •For us, it's the fighting and abuse, the noise and the in and out of people at all hours of the night," said Sis- ter Cheryl Hebestreit, who lives in the convent next door to tbe Hammett house .and ii the vice principal at St. Joachim's School across the street. ·we can't expo!ie the chil- dren,• said Hebestreit, who was relieved by the arrests. "The safety of the children ls of the utmost importance. That's difficult when we live in an environment like this." Several complaints from neighbors over the past sev- eral months contributed to the investigation and helped police gauge the activity of the suspects, Wyrick said. He encouraged neighbors to conbnue to call the police "tip• line at 754-5656, if they see any suspicious activity. ' • • DON lfACH I OAllY Pit.OT D.J. In 1944, Dennis and I lived m . the same tent on the island of Siipan, while he awaited a chance to go on the first B-29 strike on Japan. Almost every night, Japanese planes came down from Iwo Jbna on bombing raids. During those raids, we all left the tent and took shelter in slit trenches. Mine was full of creepy-crawly creatures but its main drawback was its proXllllity to an eight-hole latrine. The danger of being drowned m fecal matter should a bomb hit the latrine was more on my mind than the creepy-crawlers. Then one night, one of the creepy-crawlers bit me on the hand. The next morning my hand looked like a balloon from which protruded five barianas. Others in the tent thought I should go to the dispensary. Not SO, said Dennis. He said he was familiar with that kind of an insect bite fr<lm his experience with the Australian troops. He said be knew the approved antidote, secured a jeep and we were off for a sure cure for whatever had bitten me.
