After all, the Girl Scout Council of Orange County has its home base right here in Costa Mesa, on Adams Avenue. And you've probably seen Girl Scouts and Brownies hawking their boxes at booths In front of grocery stores near you (booth sales began-Friday, while order-taking tsegan back in January). + SIX DECADES Of SALES First, birthday greetings: Girl Scout Cookies are 60 years old this year. To celebrate the cookies' sexagenarian status, the Girl Scouts are introducing two reduced-fat versions of two classic cookies: •strawberries n' Creme" and "Chalet Creme," according to ihforma- tion from the Girl Scouts orga- nization. The first Girl Scout cookie was a simple sugar cookie. And back six decades ago, Girl Scouts actually baked their own -with moms' help, of course. l)ley packaged the sweets in wax paper bags and sold them door to door for 25 to -35-cents-a dozen. The Girl Scouts of Greater Philadelphia Council is credit- ed with the idea of organized cookie sales to raise money and help girls develop marketing and business skills. In 1934, the Philadelphia council tested a shortbread cookie; two years later, the Girl Scout Cookie sale went national. During World War Il, the annual cooJcie sales were briefly halted because of sug- ar, flour and butter shortages. Girl Scouts sold calendars and other merchandise instead. But cookie sales began rolling again at the end of t.h.e war. + MOOERN MUNCHIES Today, there are more than 16 varieties of cookies. The most j>opular? You guessed it - Thin Mints. An estimated two million girls sell 'the cookies, and last year, 168 million boxes were purchased nationwide -that's 8.3 million pounds of cookies that Americans ingested. U all those boxes were piled on top of each other, they would stand 119 million feet tall, according to a Girl Scouts press release. r-----------------------, I I I I I I I I : I I I • t • i • • I • • I I ' MORE FACTS TO CHEW ON +Americans consumed' nearly 42 million boxes of Thf n Mlnu alone last year. + 17,000 Orange County Glr1 Scouts sold 1.55 mil· lion boxes In 199.S. I abhor ants with every fiber of my being: An active spider peggy normandin web makes me flinch. A buzzing bee makes me run. A crawling slug makes me gag. And a poised grasshopper makes me sweat. • But the pre§ence of a moving ant in my home makes me hostile and aggressive. Odd, how this seemingly insignificant. defenseless fleck on the landscape· turns me into Rambo, the ant termina- tor. I know I am not alone in my dread of these mmdless yet relentless insects. At the hardware store, I ~dlltined my extennination options and nollced a similarly dead serious approach to rid.- dlng the world o{ ants. The products advertising the extermination of rruce or even roaches were somewhat whimsical 111 nature with cartoon tombstones on the label and victim-friendly names like "The Roach Hotel." But over in the ant section, the language turned ugly; the attitude clearly "take no prison- ers.'' Elpressions like "rapid kill" and "death on. contact" said the i.nsttuctions. In addition to the familiar product names like "Raid'.'. and ~lack Fl~." thefe was !!-COMBAT" and the frankly labeled "GRANTS KILLS ANTS ... They take poison back home where it is eaten by both the queen and worker ants. The colony begins to die. The weakened or destroyed ant colony can no longer infest your home." The text sounded like it llad been lifted from the David Koresh manual at Branch Davidian. But it was speaking my language. Ironically. my husband Jim and I reverse our traditional gender roles in this business. "Leave 'em-alone," Jim will say with St. Fran- cis-like sensitivity. "Our house sits on their ant hill ... what do you expect them to do?" Or he'll tell me that "they're just getting in out of the ram." In the swnmer. he'll qefend them saying, "they're looking for some water,• and SWtpe them gen Uy off· the counter with a tissue. He nught just as well be describing refugees from an oppressed nation. Jim most desperately begs me not to use the sickerung insecticide sprays. The smell drives tum crazy -even the new "Pine Fresh Scents.· "Aw. c'mon," Jim pleads with me as I crawl on my belly to the infested bunkeranned with my aerosol arsenal. "It's only an ant." But there is never only one ant, I explain to him wtth brutal honesty· There is sometimes a scout, or a decoy or even a rebel straggler who defies the straight lirle tedium. The other ants are thete by the thousands, however, dissolved into the background like hid- den pictures from a Highlights magazine illustra- tion. Study the scene long enough and the army of black dots will begin to come into focus. Back on the floor of my closet, I traced the ant· patrol to a pin-sized crack in the shower grouting. I blasted the foxhole and watched the army fold instantly. The fumes from the insecticide smoked out some of the remaining tropps and their bodies lay scattered on the sticky surface. One lone swvivor staggered over the piles of dead ants, trying to resume the silent march. "Go ahead, Mr. Ant," 1 said pointing the nozzle of my weCJpotl '<ilrectly over my final moving tar- get, "~e my day." . • PEGGY NOftMANDIN'S column runs Mondays. VOL 90. NO. 44 ntoMAS H. JOttNSON.
