Big Dredge, or how the Wew Sahara Desert, was created I t IJ generally conceded that the 1935-36 dredging of the baX was the most imPQrtant event m the creation of the pre- sent city of Newport Beach. Before that dredging, the bay was a series of mud flats and sand islands surrounded by a fishing village (Newport), a honky-tonk beach resort (Bal- boa), a smattering of houses on · a windswept plateau (Corona der Mar), and-something less than a ~rn~ttering1>f houses &n another island (Lido Isle). As a result of that dredging, we now have one of the pre- ~~ yacht harbors in the world, wnn ·1,216 acres of navigable water edged by 25.4 miles of very expensive waterfront, plus of course about 70,000 people. Strangely enough, that whole operatipn was conducted without one word being said about what it wa.S doing to the environment. There were no Frank or Frances · Robinsons to raise a warning hand, no Amigos de Bolsa Chica to preserve the wetlands. Actual- y; h:toubt that me wora'eco1o- gy" had yet been invented. I sometimes wonder how many hlindred million marine creatures were killed during that two years when all the mudflats and sand islands were sucked up and deposited in var- ious parts of the future city. While just as uncaring as the rest of the town. I do remember Pedestrian is victim of strong-arm robbery A young woman was robbed of $600 cash as she walked down 19th Str~t in broad daylight Sat- urday, Costa Mesa police reported. Those pipes were about three feet in diameter and for two years we drove over rough bridges built over those pipes. They cut down on speeding. That which came out of those pipes wasn't prefff,lfWas a flood of black water which con- tained some mud, some sand and lots of broken shells, plus enough dead marine life to stink up the place. Then, miracle of miracles, after a few years and a few rainy seasons, the mud all disappeared and wide stretches of sandy beach emerged. The oceanfront beach was a real monster. 11 stretched from the Wedge to the Santa Ana River and added about 300 yards of sand to the existing beach. We called it the "New Sahara ' Desert." Also created were Bayshores, Beacon Bay, Harbor Island and what was to be later named Linda. Island. Enoug)l sand was poured into the rilain beach at Corona del Mar to make it.t.wlce. <lL wide' Q.S it had been. l'ni.rlol~,I~. Mesa girls: Qualify yes, quantity no • Mustangs have two PCL medal winners back on downsized squad. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -Costa Mesa High girls track and field coach John Carney won't need the first 20 minutes of practice to call the roll this spring. After experiencing a numbers boom last season, the Mustangs are back down to a more select group this year. But with two of their three Pacific Coast League medal win- ners returning, there may be more quality than quantity. Juniors Tina Sakai (discus) and Ha Dang (300 hurdles) are looking to improve upon their third-place league showings as sopho- .mores, while senior Margaret Grover, sophomore Gag} Van De Walker, senior T~wny Bayes and senior Man~ Simonds are additional candidate9o to secure hard- _ware at the PCL Finals in their respective spedalties. .. Van De Walker will run the 1,600 and 3,200, where freshman Jamie DeNoewer is also a threat. Grover will anchors the sprints, and return to the 1,600 relay, while Bayes joins Sakai in the discus, having advanced to CIF Prelims a year ago, according to Camey. U it wu too hot and heavy, Yardley had a habit of striding forward.Jo grab his ball and diseppear into the corner home with it. One of the frequent players, the late Jim Brooks said, "Gawd, we'd laugh since the game would end with that a.pd George WQuldn't return with the ball until hours.later or the next day.• Brooks said, "We always got back at him later \n the basketbap games in the alley or one of the cowts tbe Yardleys built.~a V4C41lt'lot. We'd ~ him m since he was lighter and pressure physically in an unfair manner. He let most of that pass since we weren't reffing the game. But he could issue some stem looks when our elbows got out of hand." L.Jis early day friends, like rl...Douglas and Freitag, still remember the merrlment and "bow we used to have an edge in beating him and hiS gang. H Douglas said, •However, the day qune when we couldn't do that any more. George was ~wing up and building his strength. H The comer remembers one dtty at "Big Corona" when he gave a future Navy rear admiral, ·so Newport grad Jim Seely, a crunch lesson in volleyball. Seely rose high to block one Yardley shot, missed, and it hit him square in the nose. It drew a bright red nose at the net. Seely still laughs over the pained nose. There was one Sailor c~ger who could firm up strong against Yardley in the mid-40s and that was a tall, lean fellow named Dean (Bones) Robinson, who had fine potential. But Robinson never chose to advance his talents into college as a career. Coed memories often recalled that Yardley was a handsome guy, drove a flashy '41 Chevy yellow-cream convertible and whistled "Managua, Nicaragua" often in and o.ut _of Dodd's Malt op. avorite munch seemed to be grilled cheese and pickle sandwiches, not hamburgers. His two favorite basketeers in the days of 1944-45 were Jack Hupp and ex-USC star Jack Hanson off the Santa Ana Army Air Force basketball team. He . and H4DtOD were cloee fdeod9 "'~ Via Bal tale connediom· HADioO • • later )>ought o (ll'8li abop (JAX) neXt to Dodd's in 1945 Where .they often chatted between alls: by feminine clientele. " Years later, we were gifted by his lovely mother, the late "'' Dorothy Yardley, who worked ·~ out time tor us to seture an exclusive story from her star son. who had just broken the _all-time pro scoring record for a smgle sea.son (2,000 points). A kindly chap, the late sports editor Eddie West of the .. Register, had wanted that story in the w6rst way. He was utterly disappointed when he didn't get the first call. Mrs. Y8l'dley felt a, · -~ bit of loyalty belonged on our 111 side (the Pilot) for old tir}les sake. West andjdid rbJDain ·eads .. but bis vi~~ was always, "You win some, lose some.• In ·1957-58 when Yardley won the title and averaged 27 .8 points per game with the Pistons, he was known as '!The Bird• and many fans were in~ed to . believe that he new lik~ a brrd. He was sharp on tip-ins., old-style free throws and fantastic hook shots. · One of the worst times was when team owrier Fred Zollner took on a lady friend late in '58 . named Mary. It wasn'~ long be!OreMary.expressed..her film_ dislike for Yardley's shiny pate "' and exclaimed privately that a • baldie" was not a good ma tin~ idol for kids. She told Zollner to get rid of him. , Zollner told the coach, Red Rocha, to keep Yardley on the bench and out of sight' as much as possible. Zollner and Yardley clashed furiously in national magazines and papers over the strange issue, Yardley's scoting fell to 1,209 points. After the player broke his band in one contest, he was fired. Zollner said, •You're through as far as I'm concerned. I never want to see you again." His hand healed and Yardley was traded. He didn't need basketball. It, in stark reality, needed him. So, Yardley finally ·" turned with his engineering ,, degree from Stanford and built · "' '--tort.u.ne.ln-.ow>U¥~~~--=~ That was great because that , , left time for Big Corona volleyball, tennis at the Bay Club and for him and lovely Diane to , ,, raise a great family. • DON CANTltELL is a former city editor for the Dally Pilot and a c.wrrent resident of Albuquerque, N.M.
