A ftilr a highly successful fundra.ising dinner last Friday night, the Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor High School sailing teams hosted their annual alwnni team racing regatta last Sunday, which proved to be equally successful. Seven teams c_ompeted in three-on-three team racing, on the waters in front of Lido Isle YC. Teams included two UC Irvine alwnni teams, a USC alumni team, the current high school teams and a LIYC team. Most of the teams fielded only skippers, with the current high school team members crewing for them. In addition, NHYC juniors came ove.r to join in the racing and to get their first taste of team racing. When it was all said and done the two UC Irvine teams tied ?or first. Skippers included Jon Pinckney, Jonathan Posner and Nick Scandone on·one team, and Jaime Malm, Jeff McDermaid and Dan Thompson on the_J>ther. After the two teams had tied for first, a sail-off was held to determine the overall winner. Sailed in typical UC Irvine fashion, the sail-off saw some incredible team facing maneuvers and fortunately, all · sailors walked away unscathed. After the race, the rac;e committee decided to enct._t,Pe battle in a draw. An outfield error ~pw:re~ three unearned first-inning runs, two errors led to a pair of unearned runs in the fowth, f. and the Mustangs ran themselves into tWo double plays on the bases as Bolsa Grande defeated them Thursday, 6-4, in the round-robin Costa Mesa Tournament. After the Matadors (4-0-1) scored twice in the first, Costa Mesa (2-1) scored once on four consecutive walks -three by starter Dennis Mollison -but the Mus- tangs botched a bases-loaded squeeze play, resulting in an inning-ending double play. Bolsa Gr<fnde:s Lo Ngo, a 5-foot-5, 120- pound left-hander, relieved Mollison after three batters and pitched 51 /3 innings, striking out 11 and allowing only two hits. It was Ngo who dived toward first base on Costa Mesa's attempted squeeze, caught it in the air, raced to first to double up Jeremy Starns -but not in time - then fired to second to double up Matt Broesamle for a bizarre double play. In the sixth, Mesa had runners.at the comers with one out, but Ben Pelter's fly ball toJeft resulted in another double play, with the ensuing throw coming to first base to double up a ruriner who failed to tag. Mesa's Mike Adelmund, who h~d the only two hits against Ngo, pitched well enough to win, striking out eight and walking two in a route-going effort, while giving up j\JSt one earned run. .
