The Academy Awards bash ts such an ~vent -and happily one to ~hich 1 can bring personal expe- nence. 1 attended the Academy A"."'ards for 12 years, thus quali- fying me to suspend thought this week and poke about in the recesses of that event. By the time you read this, the 1998 Academy Awards will be history and we can go back to contemplating whether Bill Clin- ton did or didn't -and if so, how muc.ll. I watched the motion pic- ture industry's binge of self-con- gratulation Monday, as I always do and likely always will. I could no more not watch it than I could walk past a bunch of kids play- ing ball without stopping to watch. But there are special reasons for this affinity to the movies in joseph n. bell my generation. We grew up in the Great Depression. 1bings were generally pretty grim. My father lost a prospering business and our home, suffered a ner- vous breakdown trying to save them, and struggled mightily to keep us afloat. My only escape was the movies, and I probably spent half of my adolescence in theaters, watching fairy tales that became my reality for those blessed hours. As Neil Gabler pointed out so well in his book. "How the Jews Invented Hollywood,• a group of Jewish immigrants named Zukor and Cohn and Mayer and Warn- er embraced and put on the screen a WASP vision of an ide- alized America that carried us through the Depression and into World War ll. And married us to the movies with a bonding so powerful that divorce remains unthinkable. Until I was well into my 30s, the two things I wanted most in life were to write for the Saturday Evening Post and have access to a movie studio. The latter was accentuated by an experience just after World War ll. I had been discharged in San Francisco, and my wife and I, driving back to Indiana, stopped in Los Angeles because I bad been told that returning vet- erans were being given tours of Paramount Studio. But when my wife and I showed up for the tour, I was told only I could go. 1bli angered me, and although my wife urged me to go, we left without seeing the studio. And I made a vow to come back some day on my terms and not theirs. It took 15 years. I wa.s writing tegu1arly for the Saturday Evening Post when we moved to Newport Beach in 1959, but not in the entertainment field. That took another three years, but when 1 started reviewing movies for the Wall Street Journal's National Observer and wnting Hollywood profiles for some large-circulation national maga- zines, 1 finally made it on my terms. And, of course, the cap- stone was an invitation to the Academy Awards. Although they were still being held in the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium the first year I attended, most of my recollec- tions are of the Music Center in Los Angeles. Members of the press went through exactly the same routine as the other guests, driving their economy cars up to the red car- pet behind rows of limousines, then walking the gamut of spec- tators in dead silence when they discovered we were no one famous. We would bang out in the lobby, watching the celebri- ties arrive, then 1 would go to the press room to watch the awards on television and await the parade of winners fed to reporters after they leave the stage clutching their Oscars This is a primitive ntual useful only to still photographers. The winners stand on a little platform with their presenters trying to answer inane shouted questions. It's even more difficult for the winners of the technical awards who are virtually ignored while attention is focused on the pre- senters, usually actresses with awesome decollatage. An army of I.APO officers surround the scene, apparently to make sure no groping takes place. Out of this chaos stories are filed the next day. The most interesting things I observed backstage took place 8fter the klieg lights were turned otf, the aowd of reporters thinr>ed, and gwuds let down. The most memorable was a shouting match between Jane Fobda (winner ol best actress for •Klute•) and Michael Cimino, director of ·ne Deer Hunter• (best picture). Fon- da took loud issue with Omino's manipulation of truth in bis tale about the Vietnam War, and it looked for a while as if they might slug it out with the Oscars they were carrying. Except possibly for an invita- tion to a presidential inaugural. there's no greater one-upman- ship than an invitation to the Academy Awards. I only wish it had happened when the fine young actor presently in my fam- tly could have gone along - even though I have a strong feel- ing he's going to make it there on his own one day. •JOSEPH N. Soon to debut: a new-and-improved Cata.Jin~ Flyer· •The 10-year-old catamaran has been in dry dock for multimillion- dollar make-over; should be ready to sail April 1. While most of the improve- ments -including new engines, transmission, carpet, upholstery, paint and f1.I state-of-the-art ride control system -are complete, the ship bas been going through sea trials in San Francisco for lbe past few weeks. Sturgeon attrib- utes El Niiio's wrath on Northern California as the main reason for the holdup. "The weather bas been so bad up there that it has really IAl&ti~ Relleves Pain $ Stress & tension slowed down the work," she said. The popular boat service to Catalina Island has been out of commission since the first week in January, when the renovation began. Sturgeon said she has been canceling reservations for the past two weeks and has had to cancel all of this weekend'.s bookings as well. Hopefully, she said the new- and-improved Flyer will make its maiden voyage April 1. Sturgeon said· custQmers have been disappointed but not too upset about having to cancel their tours of the island. They all seem to agree that the new boat will be well worth the wait. The new ride control feature - which Sturgeon said was the main reason for the renovation project -is a computerized sys- tem that uses a sensor to adjust and stabilize the ship's motion as it rocks over the ocean waves. "It will be much smoother - passengers will defi.rtltely notice a difference,• she said. The Catalina Flyer is the largest passenger-carrying cata- maran on the West Coast, with a 500-passenger capacity. The ship is the only commercial car- rier to the island out of Orange County. To approve the project, the Planning Commission and aty Council would have to amend the city's general plan and waive both height and density limits on the property. With about 300,000 square feet of space, the proposed hotel would nearly double the size of the site's existing building. And at seven- stories tall, it would also exceed the property's four-story limit. The City Council is scheduled to formally consider scheduling the developer's proposal for amendment hearings April 6. If given the OK to begin the amendment process, the Planning Commiss.ion and City Council likely would consider changing the general plan this June and July, officials said. City Councilman Jpe Erickson said while he doesn't consider the city's general plan •cast in stone," he also doesn't take making changes to the development blue- print lightly. HWe do make general plan amendments, but any time we do it, especially to that kind of inten- sity, it's very serious,• Erickson said. "This isn't a slam-dunk." Because the city collects a 6% tax on each hotel room bill, a resort with about 200 rooms like the one proposed would generate new revenue for the city. 71'-Hl-1521 • Fil 714-Hl·llH FREE PICK-UP • FREE HUYERY While no finn numben can be relee.Jed until more details an. known, City Manager Allan Roeder estimated that bosed on tu revenues from other hotels of similar size, the resort could gen- erate about $342,000 a year. Other issues such as traffic impacts tbe hotel might have will be'discussed if the council agtees to formally consider the general plan amendment, Roeder said But some residents are already voicing their opinions and con- cerns. The 17 callers who telea phoned the Daily Pilot's Readers Hotline recently were equally divided on the topic. Many of the callers said such a hotel in UM: middle of downtown and just aacls the street from 1\i- angle Square would be a perfect fit for the long-vacant site. But others feared the development would snarl already-bad traffic in the area and ruin what is considered by many to be a landmark property. Santa Ana Heights resident Mary Bavry said if a hotel is built, she'd like it to be a bed-and- breakfast type, not just another cookie-cutter motel like the hand- ful that aheady dot Newport Boulevard just to the north. "I think it would be a wonder- ful place (for a bed-and-break- fast inn)/ Bavry said. The best-of-three match, won by Cd.M, featuied games which lasted, 40, 42 and 37 minutes, respectively. With both teams expected to wage similarly exhausting warfare when they meet in Sea View League play (April 21 at Newport and May 7 at CdM), school officials should consider moving the starting time of both matches to no later than 6:30 p.m . a Newport Harbor dJd play without 6-foot-7 junior middle blocker Adam Hearlson (sprained ankle) Monday. But, at least equally noteworthy, CdM is still awaiting the debut of 6·6 senior Austin George, expected to make a sizable Impact when he becomes eligible in early April, after transferring from Santa Margarita. SANTA MONICA -Back Bay Rugby Club earned a splat with host Santa Moruca. In the first contest, Back Bay fell, 27- 7. The one try scorer was Peter Dwnont with the try convert- ed by Steve Thomas. Mike Shalhub, lock, was the locals' man of the match. • The second contest was more successful as Back Bay earned a 28-19 win. Scorers were Aaron Sloman, Andrew Reynolds and Eric Finney. 'llOINICI& DIFFICU&na? So, enrollment Davids such as CdM, Mesa and Estancia, would still need to slay a Goliath or two to garner a guaranteed postseason mvitation. Such a move would ensure newspaper reporters covering these matches could meet deadline, even if the Back Bay battles extend to five games and beyond the One of Back Bay's new recruits, Allen Just, was the man of the match after 80 mmutes of solid, aggressive play.
