This is a habit ingrained during my childhood in the Midwest, and it is both therapeutic and instructive. How many of you, for example, krlow that the former Angel catch:- er Greg Myers bas hit two home runs for Minnesota this spring; or that only one of the pitching Mimbs twins is doing well; or that a Met rookie with the wonderful name of Huskey already has eight home runs; or that the Angels won 11 games in a row this spring and a · week ago Saturday got a no-bitter from a sequence of five pitchers? For those of you who are saying joseph n. bell ~Who cares?" -let me hasten to add that the real beauty of this inf orma- tion is that it is of absolutely no importance. I'll explain that later. Born and bred Southern Cali- fornians have no real commitment to baseball spring training because they see it in its most superficial light: as a mildly surrealistic sort of exercise in which grown men re- learn how to throw and catch and bit a baseball after several months of doing other things. March was a dreadful month in Indiana. The winter had been endured past all reasonable limits, and waiting for signs of spring became a daily obsession. March was seldom cooperative. It would dangle a suggestion of the warm days to come for a day or two, then bit us with the worst snow- storm of the winter. We alternated all month between despair, impa- tience, anger and hopelessness. The two former members of tbe state assembly staged a bitter contest last year to fill tbe unexpired term of then-senator Marian Bergeson, who stepped down to become a county supervisor. Ferguson has repeatedly accused Johnson of carpet-bagging his way into office by moving from Placentia to Irvine to qualify for the .35th District seat. Johnson fired back with allegations that Ferguson had convinced Horcher to tum against the Republican Party and help keep Willie Brown in power. During the rematch, Johnson refused to debate Ferguson. The chal- lenger has asked the Orange County District Attorney's office to investigate allegations that Johnson does not live in the district.
