By Tina Borgatta, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -City officidls on Monday said they'd like more information about the school dis- trict's medium and long-range plans for housing students before deciding whether to buy the Cos- ta Mesa High School farm site for recreational development. City officials hope to spend the next few weeks meeting with school officials to gain a firmer handle on the district's plans and discuss the possibility of entering into a joint-use agreement at the farm site as well as other school sites in the city. · "I sort of feel we'l"e on 'Let's Make a Deal' here;" Council- woman Sandra Genis said Mon- day night. "We've been present- ed with an offer, but we're not sure if there's something better behind another curtain." Tue Newport-Mesa Unified School District's Board of 'Ihlstees has offered the 18-acre site, w~ch school officials say is worth about $9 million, to the city at a discounted but unspecified price. Wbile the council. said ·they were interested in the offer, the members said they'd like to know whether the district plans to sell off any other properties in the future that might be more suit- able to the city's needs. School nustee Jim Ferryman, who attended Monday's City Council meeting, told the mem- bers the district is in the midst of developing a five-year plan. He said that plan should be complet- ed in about three months. However, the city probably will have to respond to the dis- trict's purchase offer before it's completed. The law gives the city just 60 days from the time the offer was received to decide whether it wants to pursue sale negotiations. On Monday, residents urged the council to take advantage of the opportunity to buy the fann site. · #The children of Costa Mesa need positive programs and safe places to play," resident Susan McGuire told the council~ #Bored children get into trouble ... By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot LIDO MARINA VIl..l.AGE -An infestation of cockroaches appears to have accomplished what it has taken the city of Newport Beach more than a year to do: shut down the Thunderbird nightclub. The Orange County Health Care Agency revoked the night- club's health permit, less than two weeks before the popular nightclub must either sell the business to a legitimate restaura- teur or close down completely. The action came Friday night when a routine health inspection of the club revealed a live cock- roach infestation; coc.kroach feces in the restaurant's dish-washing and food storage areas; and gen- eral filthin~ss in the business' food preparation areas. The situation was serious - enough to require immediate action, according to health care officials. "Our normal procedure is to suspend a food business' health permit if there's a series of long- standing problems or if we detect an immediate health hazard,~ said James Huston, assistant director of the county''s environ- mental health department. Huston would not give further details about the inspection, say- ing Thunderbird administrators had not determined if they would correct the problems or force ~e health department to file a court case against the business. Neither David Ariss nor Greg Mulholland, the Thunderbird's co-owners, returned phone calls seeking comment Monday. The nightclub has been a headache for the city since open- ing in November 1994 .. City police officers have regularly responded to the site to deal with complaints of noise, overcrowding, fights and other rowdy behavior. • SEE ROACHES PAGE 4 liquor license p~a grueling one By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -Under the watchful gaze of the city's Police Department and the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. a respected restaurateur of 20 years can be subjected to as intense sautiny as a newcomer with a reputatioq.for raucousness. NEWPORT BOULEVARD SPECIFIC PLAN Stnce fate last summer, a committee of Newport Boulevard business owners and Eastside residents have been wresUing With what recommendations should be included 1n a proposed specific plan for northbound Newport Boulevard between 19th Street and Mesa Drive. The plan is Intended to encourage viable commercial uses to continue and prosper as weft as provide marginal use incentives to redevelop or transition to a better use of the property. .Th~ commttt~ mem~ should be commended f0< coming to grips with issues that 1nciu<.1e0 the boulevard's identity, changing land use patterns. social and Cf'ime problems. economics, fighting, signage and traffic circulation and access. In a very reasonable penod of time these Individuals with the heAp and direction of City staff. Councilman Gaty Monahan and Planning CommissK>O Chair Libby Cowan have compiled almost 50 pages of suggestJoos and diagrams to be aJred in a public workshop on April 2 at 7 p.m. in Crty Council Chambers. After public input and any necessary reconsiderat.00 by the committee, the proposed plan will be put under the knlVes of the Planning Comrmssion and City Council. The Newport Boulevard Study Committee's proposed solutions included some that could be termed as standard. such as prohibiting certain land uses, easing certain developmental fees and encouraging increased traffic by restriping Newport Boulevard at 19th Street. However, the committee and staff proved their worth with creative thinking that conceived a new land use designation to be adopted concurrently with this specific plan. A Commercial-Residential designation would allow a complementary mix of res1dentiaJ and commercial development in the area affected. Congratulations to all the participants for the productive results of the many hours spent. CHAMBER OFFICE TRANSFORMED OVER WEEKEND Recently the Chamber was made the very fortunate recipient of several modular office cubicles, including desks, cabinets and reception area. Adriana Higuera. owner of Coast Escrow, recently combined her business with another, closing one of the offices and making the modular furniture surplus. Jim Ferryman, a long time friend of Adriana's and the Chamber, suggested she contact µs to self her surplus furniture. A very generous (she practically donated the furniture) deal was struck. The Chamber was now the proud new owner of a LOT of PIECES of MODULAR furniture. Now what? Our very resourceful office manager. Jim Torline, was able to track down the original installation person, Mark Lawry to Install our new bounty, pronto! The Chamber's existing furniture was now surplus and very much in the way! Once again, Jim Tor1ine got on the phone contacting the Newport-Mesa School District which was very grateful to receive the furniture, making arrangements to pick It up Immediately. Jim and Mark worked all weekend. Come Monday morning we were able to walk Into a totaJly Installed, totally transfooned, modular office eetting The colors even match ... we're really styte'n nowt Thanks to all of those named and unnamed who made our office transformation a tremendous success. Abrams is seeded No. 1 in the boys 18s, Turkich No. 6. Santa Barbara's Sam Webster, who defeated Turkich on Saturday, 6-4, in a nonleague match, ·is seeded second at Ojai. AQrams, headed for Stanlord on a tennis scholarship next season, and Turkich exchanged words ln the eighth game because of questionable line calls. With Turkich serving at 30-30, Abrams called his forehand passing shot out, which seemed to irritate Turkich. On the next point, 1\J.rkich called it out on an Abrams overhead smash at the net. Abrams, a poised competitor, was annoyed by the call and stayed ot the net to argue. •1 wasn't trying to intimidate hhn. because I knew if 1 played well I would beat biiii, • Abrams said. "I was just upset with the line call; I was just fighting for my rights. I thought the ball was in and I let him know. HI called the ball out (on the previous point), and I even showed him the ball mark and he didn't argue. Then he came back and made that call. I thought (the overhead) was on .the line." When matters calmed down, Turkich won the next two points to hold and tie the set, 4-4. Abrams, who began the ninth game with an ace and a double-fault, held for the lead, then broke Turkich for the win. "I'm not surprised," Newport Harbor Coach Charlie Bleiker said. •1 think Geoff's serve is stronger, and he never tralled in the set. (I\ukich) is a good ballplayer, he bung in there un.til the end, but (Abrams) didn't win it at the end, (Turkich) lost it. Experience is hard to beat." The crowd, estimated at 100, was a factor for Abrams.
