So far, the district has recovered about 92 cents of every dollar, said Mike Fine, superin- tendent of business services. The LeBoeuf settlement would bring the district's recovery up to 95 cents on the dollar, leaving about $5 million still owed to the district, officials said. If there is no court challenge to the agreement, the district could have the cash in hand within 60 to 90 days, but attorneys for the coun- ty invesbnent pool said it is likely the settlement will be challenged. In cases that involve several defendants, as with the bankrupt- cy litigation, a so-called • Kaypro objection• often is filed. The oth- er defendants -such as Merrill Lynch & Co., in this case -could object to LeBoeul's settlement, claiming the agreement leaves them liable for more than their fair share of the damages. •One of the other defendants couJd object that the settlement doesn't fairly allocate damages,• said Patrick Shea, attorney for participants in the Orange Coun- ty investment pool. Uvingston said she still is try- ing to gather donations from friends and relatives to pay for installation of the bench and tree, which s~e said will bloom yellow flowers once a year. The sun suddenly appeared to shine a little brighter, the breeze blew a bit more gently. 8ut then, you score five runs in one inning and everything seems a little better. It was in the fifth inrung that Costa Mesa High erupted for five runs to seal up a 6-0 nonleague victory over visiting Edison Thursday afternoon. The five run-explosion was 1ust icing on the cake, too, as senior pitcher hurle r Kristin Chisholm was firing a gem with her defense strongly behind her. "The last four games we've played a lot better and this is just a reward, a reward for them to come out here and shut out a Sun- set League team," Mesa Coach Jim Weeks said of his squad that boosts its record to 3-10. The Mustangs have had the tr share of woes this season, but with Chisholm (3-9) limiting the Chargers to ground balls and the l, ~, f-r f j ,'. __ I_ entire infield scooping them up, the pain of a winless Pacific Coast League campaign thus far seemed far away. "We got a big ·run (in the sec- ond inning) to get us the lead ~d then, after the fifth, we relaxed a little bit and when Edison had those two hits (in the sixth), it wasn't game-threatening,• Weeks said. Mesa got on the board when three-time all-district standout Julie Collett drilled a triple to deep left field. She was pushed home when Heather Chris- tiansen, in the next at-bat, knocked a single to right~center. Over the next two innings, the slim lead was never threatened. Chisholm, who took to the pitching circle for the first time this season, was not overpower- ing -she didn't strikeout a batter -but fully effective. The Chargers never reached beyond second base and never put together a serious rally col- lecting just four singles the entire game due in large part to a tight defense. Collett, anchoring the infield at shortstop, had six assists and made back.hands look easy. Man- ning the hot comer was Michelle Barnett, who also was impressive. •Julie, well, she's the best player in the league, and maybe in the county,• Weeks bragged, •And Michelle, she was playing the outfield and (when a player was deemed ineligible) she won the spot in a tryout and has worked really, really hard.• Costa Mesa's big fifth-inning rally began when Kristy Errico led off the inning reaching via error. Edison would again help out with another throwing error on Brooke Shanley's dribbler in front of the plate leaving runners at the cor- ners with no outs. Chrissy Genet was next and bit a chopper to third. As Charger third baseman Yasmine Moguedezi fired to first, Errico dashed for home. Genet was called out and first baseman Har- mony Gat~s tossed the ball home for what appeared to be a double play. But Errico's feet-first slide into the catcher knocked the ball loose and continued the rally, which would yield four more runs with RBI singles coming from Kim Daniels, Kelli Daub and Collett. Collett and SharLley each had two hits. • SEE SUMMARIES PAGE 9 lawn bowllng 1<1M HAGGtlUY I OAl.Y PILOT John Amles ~ow1 a bowl dUrlng the Cutthroat Tournament at the Newport Harbor Lawn BowllDg Club Wednesday. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot C ORONA DEL MAR -When you first see these lawn bowlers decked out in their white accoutrements and armed with bull's-eye accuracy on the greens, you realize it's more than cool ocean breezes and good fellowship that sways each member to come•back again and again. There's more competition at the Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Oub than you'd imagine. One of the events this week, for example, is aptly called the Cutthroat Tournament. But don't be fooled. It's just for fun. But if lawn bowling seems easy to you, try it yoUISelf. Rolling bowls on the approximate 120-square-foot greens can be tricky. The ancient game is a test of temperament and of the mind. Given a chance, it'll bowl you over. Lawn bowling, also referred to as bowls, lawn bowls or bowling on the green, was introduced in England during the 13th century, and fellows like Tag Taggart continue to carry the sport's flag . •What we have here is the garden spot of the world (at Newport Harbor), and we've got this ocean breeze,• said Taggart, the dub's longtime membership chairman. •it's healthy exercise and you're out in the fresh air. It also (requires) great psychological thinking, too, and it's good for the mental attitude and it's good fellowship." While Newport Harbor encourages people of all ages to participate in its sport (the club currently has about 100 members), there's no secret about its tremendous allure for seniors. · Today will provide an illustration of that when the Corona del Mar-based dub hosts Coast League competition, an eight-dub participation which meets on alternate Fridays at different locations throughout Orange County and Long Beach ... Each club provides six members for triples (three on three) competition. (Lawn bowling also features singles, doubles and ~.which is four on four). Play begins today at 9:30 a.m. •1be greens are in excellent shape," Taggart reported as Newport Harbor prepared for today's match. "We've got a good greenskeeper now, the same guy who just happens to be the greenskeeper at Big Canyon Country Cub. There's a little simile.rity (in golf and lawn bowling greens), but not much in a greeN5nskee~s job. These greens have to be much faster than wport Harbor, a highly social club with a rich history of ampions, is one of only three dubs in Orange County th open membership. The others are based in prtvate communities. It is called a •bowl," wb.icb is not to exceed Jt/2 pounds. The bowl, made of a plastic substance. doesn't roll straight. It is weighted on one side and rolls rugged, 01 bias. At the other end is a jack, the key to the game because it determines the length of the playmg beld in the rink. The jack, sort of like a huge golf ball being thrown down the center of the rink, must "It's healthy exercise and you're out in the fresh air . . . " -TAG TAGGART • travel at least 70 feet, but no more than 114 feet, in establishing the length of play. It is a process done after every end. Baseball has innings, foot- ball has quarters, hockey has periods ... lawn bowling has ends. There is no penalty for hitting the Jack. A change in position of the jack might put 1t closer to the bowl of the person who is bowl- ing or closer to an opponent Bear in mind, it is a game of two opposing sides giving and taking, unlike 10 pins in traditional bowling. You can make a per- fect play and have it spoiled by yow opponent, and you would do the same right back, continually trying for control and praying for luck. Those chances heighten as the bowls cluster around the jack. As the series of epu.odes called ·heads· and •ends• wcrease, the combat deepens as the play thickens. Few games have such sustained interest. For details at Newport Harbor: 546-0784. PIRATES CONTINUED FROM 8 have it Th\.irsday. He yielded eight hits and four runs in 12/J umings, retinng JUSt four of the 13 hitters he faced. Compounding his own strug- gles, Evans failed to cover first base in time on a chopper to first bdseman Jon Fenoglio. The men- tal lapse gave Rkh PohJe a gift mfteld single and allowed two runs to score. ·I think Ryan was a tittle frus- trated by not being able to throw stnkes and, as it turned out, those two runs were costly,• said Alto- belli, who quickly summoned reliever Ryan McDermott to stop the bleeding. And did he ever. McDermott, who had yielded 12 earned runs in 16 previous relief innings, struck out Gabe Gerhardt to leave the bases loaded in the second and strand- ed three more in a scoreless third. He cruised into the eighth, retir- ing 16 of 22 he faced, until a dou- ble and a walk brought the hook and an appreciative round of applause from the OCC crowd and his teammates. "He hasn't had a lot of quality innings this year, but that was a super effort (S.Z/3 innings, four hits and one unearned run),· Altobel- li said. But while McDermott kept them close, Corona kept the visi- tors at bay. An error led to two unearned OCC runs in the third, as Fenoglio doubled in a run and Ivan Loochkartt's groundout plat- ed another to make it 4-2. Jude Chavez's leadoff homer in the eighth dosed the deficit to 4-3, but the Chargers added an unearned insurance run in their last at-bat and Corona got four of the final sue outs via strikeouts. "(Corona) threw a good game and we didn't adjust,• Altobelli said. "He kept the ball down and we couldn't lay off the low pitch.~ Chavez, the Pirates' leading hitter, added a double and Bobby Calderon also got a pair of hits for OCC. They were the only Pirates who did not strike out. Costa Mesa resident Ryan Blood, an All-ClF perlonner last year at Calvary Chapel High, had a pair of doubles for the Chargers. 0.--....
