70, Pyewacket, ran the world-
famous 125 nauticdl nule race to
Ensenada in an astounding 1 t hours
and 54 minutes Fnday night, ecllpsmg
the fifteen-year-old record set m 1983
by the 83-foot classic Christine.
Pyewacket was among the approx-
imately 480 boats participating m thls
year's Newport to Ensenada Interna-
tional Yacht Race. Boats in 23 classes
competed in the race which started
Friday. They were still coming in as of
Sunday morning. The Newport to
Ensenada race, celebrating its 5 t st
year, is the world's largest mtemat1on-
al boat race.
Disney wanted the ULDB-class
first-to-finish record to add to tus long
list of record-breaking races. Disney
beat Christine's record of 12 hours and
16 minutes by more than a hall-hour
Other record-setting wms for 01Sney
include Victoria to Maui; L.A. to Hon-
olulu (Transpac) and San Diego to
Puerta Vallarta.

Steve Fossett of hot air balloon fame,
steered Stars And Stripes, the former
Dennis Conner America's Cup-wm-
rung catamaran, to to finish first in the
muJb-huU class with a record time of
six hours a nd forty-eight minutes, just
m tune for happy hour. After handi-
cappmg adjustments, other boats
were named as winners in their
respective classes.
The race was not Wlthout prob-
lems. There was tremendous confu-
sion pertairung to the starter's gun.
Eight boats crossed the starting line
early and had to re-start. Then, 1ust
after the second Deel left town at
12:10p.m .. approximately eight boats
clustered together, sending fiberglass
flying. No one was injured in the col·
lision.
Four local boats fared well in com-

Providing Newport with streets, signals,

Being an part of creating improvements for

caramel icing, angel food cake, popcorn,

Enjoying high cholesterol foods.

trical engineering, because I had assem-
bled an FM radio kit and thought it was a
fun thing to do. I believed that's what elec-
trical engineers did.

requirements and being active in support-
ing the Orange County Boy Scout Council.
+ As a child, what did schoolmates tease
about?: When I was just entering first
grade, WWil was ending, and this guy out
in California created a cartoon character
named "Donald Duck,• Since my name
was Donald, the kids couldn't resist adding
Duck to my name. I even learned to quack.
+ What is In your trunk right now?: I have
at least nine trunks: one has old family pho-
tos; another has a manhole puller, sewer
pipe, vests and atlas maps: another one
stores the old army fatigues; the one in the
storage bin bas old tools: and a couple even
have sparn tires.
+ The first thing that attracted you to your
spouse: When I first saw her, she had the
most outrageous blond beehive hairdo
you've ever seen, and then I found out she
was a great cook, too.
+ The worst idea you ever had: Painting
my 1967 British Racing Green MGB GT
light baby blue and calling it the •BLUE
BE.•
+ What would you have been voted in
high school?: That was back in the 1950s
and it would have been •Tue coolest of
them all• or •A real swell guy.•
+ Who are your heroes?: Dwight Eisen-
hower, the Lone Ranger, my father, mother
and grandfather and the hard workers that
make our country great.

good mystery, exploring out of the way

NEWPORT BEACH -Israel's 50
years of statehood will be cele-
brated at a Yom Ha'atzmaut
(Israel Independence Day) din-
ner-dance Thursday in Newport
Beach.
Ruth Lobel of Corona del Mar is
chairwoman of the event, which
is being coordinated by the
Women's Division of the Jewish
' Federation of Orange County.
·It's going to be a very exciting
event,• she said. "It's a way of
getting the community together
and having a sense of celebration
and unifying us all.•
The "once-every-50-years
event• will be held on the golden
anniversary date of Israel's state-
hood under the Hebrew calendar,
Lobel said.
The 6 p.m. dinner will be at the
Hyatt Newporter, 1107 Jamboree
Road. Tickets are $75 per person
or $750 for a table of 10.
The evening will include a
gourmet dinner, dancing and
entertainment by the Wayne Fos-
ter Orchestra. Blind since early
childhood, Foster appears with 30
performers. He has entertained
for presidents Reagan and Ford

submitted essays that ranged
in length from on~half page to
two pages.
Topics were assigned in four
grade categories: elementary,

Magnitude, an Andrews-70
owned by Doug Baker.
It was Pyewacket's gameplan
to stay close to Magnitude, as
Disney knew she was going lo
be our toughest competitor.
As a crewman aboard
Pyewacket, I knew we were in
for a challenge as m the first
three miles, our gameplan was
out the window.
We decided to follow and that's
when we started lo gain.
•I think she's getting bigger,"
Disney kept saying as we surfed
closer to our competition. But
for three hours we stared at
Magnitude's stem.

five boat lengths ahead, in
better wind, and pulling away.
At approximately 8:30 p.m.
we determined we had pulled
even and were paralleling
about a half nule apart.
That's when things started
gelling interesting. For three
more hours we jockeyed for
posibon, exchanging the lead
every three or four minutes.
After passing the Coronado
Islands, we changed sails six
times.
When it was detennined that
we had established the lead and
it would be tough for
Magnitude to catch us, we went
into a ma tch racing mode and
matched every Magnitude tack
We then set our sights to break

When all was said dnd done,
we bettered the race record by
approximately 22 minutes,
pulling into Ensenddd Bay iust
five minutes past rrudnight

Harbor High's girls to a third-place
finish in a tightly-contested team
finish Satmday at the 1998
Estancia Frosh-Soph Swim Invita-
tional Satmday.
All Murphy did was win the 200
freestyle in 1 :59.67, the 500 in
5:24.71 and anchor the winning
relays in the 200 medley and 400
freestyles.
Also coming through with win-
ning efforts for Newport's girls
were Jennifer Arrow in the 50
breaststroke (33.11) and Erin Ball
in the 50 back (3 1.47).
Estancia's Lauren Cassity was a
winner in the 50 free (26.69) and
Costa Mesa's Wendy Martinovich
won the 100 individual medley in
