sion derision to reject a request
by Uoyd's Garden Shop to tear
down the n\11'$ery complex and
build a mini-storage facility on
the site.
Uoyd's, a local landmark fot 38
years at the southeast comer of
Bay Street and Newport Boule-
vard, wants to convert the 1.5-
acre property into a 47,000-
square-foot Instorage business.
With gross profits dropping
from $1.1 million in 1988 to
$543,000 last year and the prop-
erty now only about half of its
former value o1 $2.5 million,
owner Uoyd Shaver said his
nursery will either go out of
business and leave behind an
empty lot or be converted into a
mini-storage facility.

room for the . storage facility,
which would be open from 1 a.m.
to 8 p.m .. seven days a week, but
Shaver would continue to operate
his landscaping company, offi-
cials said.
On April 13, the Planning
Commission voted 4-1 to deny the
application for the mini-storage
business on the grounds th.at it
does nor match the Newport
Boulevard Specific Plan.

businesses to help out.

NEWPORT BEACH -As part
of its observance of National
Tourism Week, the Newport
Beach Conference & Visitors
Bureau is enlisting the aid of local
businesses and residents to gen-
erate interest in the city's bur-
geoning tourist indUstry.
The Bureau ~ kicking off a
grass-roots marketing program
called. •tt•s Neat to Meet in New-
port Beach,• ~hich invites local
members of business, profession-
al. philanthropic and social orga-
nizations to bold conferences,
meetings and trade shows in
Newport Beach.
·Tourism is a significant rev-
enue generator for the City total-
ing $17 million in 1997," said
, Bureau President Rosalind
W~ in a press release. •0ne
hundred percent of that income is
derived from meeting, confer-
ence and leisure travelers. This
income received by the city pro-
vides residents and businesses
alike with an improved infra-
structure ranging from firefighter
~and police personnel to storm
drainage systems and street
resurfacing, as-it goes directly
into the city's general fund.·

to help develop Parking Management Plan.

Parking is by far one of the most
important issues for residents,
businesses and visitors in this
unique, dense stretch of New-
port Beach.
City plalnners tonight are
inviting all those groups to
become actively involved in the
development of a Parking Mah-
agement Action Plan -one of
the first steps in the city's Balboa
revitalization.effort.
Principal planner John Douglas
said the special community open
house is the first in a series of
foJ)UilS that will attempt to gather
input and ideas from the public
before the city adopts a final park-
ing pliµl for the peninsula.
"The purpose of Monday's
meeting ~ to bring people up to
SJ!eed with what's been going on
iJl. the last year with respect to
parking, aslt them to look at the
goals of· the study and give us
feedback as to whether we are
od right track for what trying to

The next step in the four-
month process will be meetings
geared toward individual dis-
tricts and neighborhoods on the
peninsula. Tb.ose meetings, will
cover potential solutions to park-
ing problems, Douglas said.
The final step will be another
peninsula-wide meeting, where
city staff members and consul-
tants unveil their proposed plan
and get feedback before taking
the proposal to city leaders.

The Newport Beach City
Council last spring adopted the
Project 2000 report, which out-
lines a plan for revitalizing the
peninsula. At the time, council
members identified priorities for
the effort and parking was high
on the list, Douglas said.

as the Newport Invitational Rowing
Regatta champions.
For the 13th straight time the Pirates,
under Coach Jim Jorgensen. handled
the competition Sunday morning, edg-
ing the University of Santa Clara and
UC Davis under sunny skies with a
slight tail wind that made for id~al row-
ing conditions over the 2,000-meter
North Udo Channel Course.
The Pirates won the Junior Varsity 8
(the Robert M. Moore Cup) and the
Novice 8 (Frank Marscellas Cup) titles
and finished second in the Novice 4
competition to accumulate 16 points,
enough to edge Santa Clara and UC
Davis, which deadlocked with 13
points. UC San Diego finished fourth
with 11, followed by Long Beach State,
UC Santa Barbara, San Diego State, UC
Irvine, Chapman, University of San
Diego and UCLA.
"Things really went well,• said Jor-
gensen, who watched his three squads
accumulate what usually requires four
OCC squads to do, in order to prevail.
The Pirates' JV 8 included Walter

and blew past Petite with an incredible kick,

league prellms and finals, Morse no doubt
enters the competition with the biggest target
on her back. Monie thls spring has competed
(and won) in other events.
Morse isn't the whole sJiow for Corona del

Rudesill, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound

earned a spot last fall on the Daily
Pilot's All-Newport-Mesa District
Dream Team. recorded a personal-
best 169 feet. a112 inches in the dis-
cus April 23 in a PCL meet against
Laguna Hills.
Costa Mesa's all-time mark is
173-1, held by Curt Ellenberg in
1975. Ellenberg also holds the
school record in the shot put
(56-4112), also accomplished in '15.
Rudesill, who hu reached the
ClF Southern Section Division Ill
