NEWPORT BEACH -After
hours of heart-wrenching and
sometimes angry testimony Tues-
day, a judge again delayed sen-
tencing of Jason Rausch for
vehicular manslaughter in a
crash last year that killed a class-
mate from Newport Harbor High
School and seriously injured two
others.
In a new revelation, mean-
while, a contentious excha11ge
between Rausch's defense attor-
ney and the mother of one of the
most severely injured victims,
Danny Townsend, revealed that
be previously had been driving a
car that struck a Lldo Isle woman.
Rausch, 19, was the designat-
ed sober driver of a 1989 Chevro-
let Blazer carrying nine cl&Ss-
mates that flipped over on IIvine
Avenue on May 23, killing Donny
Bridgman, 18. Rausch, who was
scheduled to be sentenced Tues-
day, faces up to a year in jail and
three yea.rs probation.
For the third consecutive day,
however: Superior Court Judge
Everett W. Dickey postponed sen-
tencing after taking the unusual
step of throwing out a contested
Probation Department report and
hearing from the families of stu-·
dents injured in the crash.
Vickie Bridgman, who sobbed
throughout her 35-minute speech
to the court, provided an uneasy
momeot 9~e-begao to tell how
the crash that killed her son
changed her life.

NEWPORT BEACH -Police are searchin9 fo:r a
man who sexually assaulted an 11-year-old gid in a
bathroom at Lincoln Elementary School
A neatly dressed man wearing a mask assaulted the
girl about 3 p.m. Monday and reportedly left the school
grounds on foot, police Sgt. Andy Gonis said Tuesday.
Officers are increasing patrols around local ele-
mentary schools today, he said.
·we will be monitoring activity at the school and
others in the coming days,• Gonis said. •we want to
alert the community about this incident"
Police said the girl is from Newport Beach, but her
identity will remain confidential.
The investigation is in the early stages, Gonis said,
and police are being assisted by the Child Abuse Ser-
vices Team.
The girl described the suspect as a white man in
bis 40s with brown hair, about 6 feet tall and weigh-
ing 190 pounds.

NEWPORT BEACH--After a
yearlong investigation, police have
arrested a former psychiatrist and
suspected child killer on 16 felony
counts stemming from the alleged
molestation of a 16-year-old boy.
Dr. Burnell Gordon Forgey, 80,
was arrested at his Irvine home
about 8:30 p.m. Monday and
booked at the Newport Beach jail.
He later was transferred to the

companion, James Lee Crumme.l. 54, a convicted

has been accused of committing sexu-
al assault against a prostitute, Costa
Mesa police said.

picked up a prostitute and then fon-
dled her. He was booked on two felony

A City Council study session tenta-
tively is scheduled May 26, when coun-
cil members may review a possible
long-term agreement for shared use of
the f adlity, said Ladonna Kienitz, com-
munity services director.
The Boys and Girls Club has been
operating on a month-to month basis
out of the dty building since its 25-year
lease expired in June 1996.
Earlier this year, a coundl subcom-
mittee considered options for what to do
with the building. Those included
shared use of the building,· canceling
the clµb's lease and relocating all dty-
nin youth programs now housed at Un-
coln Elementary School to the Eastbluff
facility.
Jn March, the city's finance commit-
tee recommended that the club figwe
out how it could expand lts seIVices to
~t the city's needs, share the building
with the dty and bow much the organi-
zation could afford to pay the dty in

programs.

Hedges, a pro-airport Newport
Beach councilman, sent a letter
to 500 Republicans charging that
the anti-airport group Project 99
in Irvine is a front for the leftist
Bay Area organization.
It is not clear why the Tides
Foundation gives a damn about
~e El Toro airport, but Hedges
wants those good Republican
folks in South County who
oppose the airport to know they
are in bed with a bunch of lefties.
And probably perverts, too.

County. We've come full circle
back to James Utt. All the univer-
sities and cultural centers and
high-tech industries that have
juiced up our area over the past
four decades have brought us to
this. ~
Those of us who live under the
John Wayne night path can only
hope that Hedges is shut down
before he persuades county
su~rvisors who already are on
our side that maybe they should
take a closer look at their allies.

The Los Angeles nmes did a
piece last week on Schmitt and
bis daughter, Mary Kay Letourn-
eau. who bas been in the news
lately because she has borne two
children by a 14-year-old student
in the high school where she
taught. In an effort to explain her
behavior, the nmes was kinder
to Schmitt than it should have
been. Schmitt was a demagogue
and a hypocrite who used family
values (while be was fathering
children. outside his 9wn family)
and communist hysteria to win
public office over rational candi-
dates. His defeat of Bruce Sumn-
er for the stat~ Senate deprived
us of one of the most progressive
legislators we've ever known.
Such examp)es were but the
tip of a reactionary iceberg that
surfaced here in the early 1960s,
even though California had mod-
erate Republicans in both the '
statehouse (Gov. Earl WaITeD)
and the U.S. Senate (Anaheim's
Tom Kuchel), and Orange Coun-
ty was represented by several
progressives, such as Sumner.
But through the ebb and now of
California elections since,
Orange County has remained
steadfastly on the far right.
As one astute observer of
the local political scene told me:

COSTA MESA -The Coast
Community College District
board of trustees tonight will con-
sider· a three-year contract that
would give teachers an estimated
4 % pay raise in the first year.
The board will review a tenta-
tive agreement between the dis-
b'ict and the Coast Federation of
Educa~ors. which represents about
850 teachers, including 301 at
Orange Coast College in Costa
Mesa. The college district includes
OCC, Coastline Commuµity Col-
lege and Golden West College.
Under tenns of the contract,
teachers would receive three
annual cost-of-living adjustments
between 1998 and 2001. The
lll!lount is determined by the
state, but increases have been
ranging from 2.2% to 2.7%, offi-
cials said ..
For the first year, teachers also
would receive a 1 % salary
increase and 25% of the money
generated by an increase in stu-
dent emollments. For the two
subsequent years, teachers would
receive the cost-of-living increas-
es and 50% of income generated
by enrollment growth.

The contract also includes
$3,000 for supplemental
Medicare benefits for employees
who have been with the district at
least 10 years.
Union offici.als could not be
reached for comment about the
agreement. which applies only to
teachers.
There is no •me-too" clause in
the 'contract that automatically
would extend· the raises to all
classified and administrative
employees, officials said. The dis-
tiict, however, usually ends up
extending the same raises to all
employee groups.
"There's no 'me-too' provision,
but the practice of 'me-too' bas
been consistent in the district,•

ers qualify for the program. It will
be up to each college bow to
replace the retirees. .
For the spring 1999 semester,
most retirees will be replaced by

While {he budget does not
assume any revenues or expen-
ditures related to ·the coast, it
does outline personnel costs
needed in the first year the
annexation is approved. If the
area eventually is annexed,
which Murphy said is not expect-
ed until January 1999, the bud-
get could be am..ended.
"The proposed budget does
some long-range planning and
helps us build up our reserves to
deal with infrastructure issues,"
Mayor Tom Edwards said. •Over-

way, I've reveled with the
opportunities or the fonpat

question of the day in terms
of what comes first, as in the
chicken and the egg.
What oomes first is Friday
night's football game, ThUJ'Sday
afternoon's track meet, or
Wednesday's swim meet.
All of the perks that smaH'
newspapers enjoy in and
arowid Southern California, i.e.
the Dodgers, Angels, Santa
Anita and the Lakers, have
been dismissed, leaving only
the important items ... as in
Corona del Mar, Newport
Harbor, Costa Mesa and
Estancia high schools, along
with Oran_ge Coast College,
Southern California College,
local goll and tennis, and an
assortment of other things,
including our Uttle Leaguers
and the sort. And that's the
way it should be.
But I wouldn't be honest U I
didn't .admit a certain pang of
remorse every time I sit in front
of the television and watch a
1fojans' or Bruins'. football
game. _
The lure of USC and. UCLA _
football had been with me since
Jan. 1, 1946, when I listened to
Alabama. and a year later,
Illinois, cream USC and UCLA,
respectively.
I don't why I took it so
personally, perhaps when
you're yowig, you tend to allow
perspectives to get a little out of
whack, or feel responsible for
something because it's being
played in your backyard.
But there's no doubt, I was a
9-year old lfojan, as well as an
10-year-old Bruin.
This morning one of the
figures that has always stuck
with me during ~ys as a
sportswriter surfaces at the
Balboa Bay Club in the form of
former UCLA football coach
Terry Donahue.
And this is one individual
whom I have never found
·myself losing perspective.
Irs a terrific coup by the
Commodores Club to get
Donahue to address the Class
of '98 at this morning's Athletic
Aw¥ds Breakfast, honoring
Corona del Mar and Newport
Harbor's blue chips.
It's a gathering which always
has that touch o( class and
perspective, and there could not
bave been a better choice than
Terry Donahue to lend some of
his views. .,
My memories of Terry
Donahue and his great UCLA
teams always center around
those times when the
SUITOunding mood Was
incredibly ecstatic or depressive
to the point of suidde.
In other words, those few
minutes in the aftermath of the
great victory or the terrlble loss.
In every instance Donahue
would come through completely
unscathed.
He never gloated, and he
never whined. He'd give credit
to the team which beat his
Bruins, and graciously accepted
the winner's wreath.
His numbers and laurels
speak for themselves, but as is
almost always the case when it
comes to sports, anything less
than winning every game by
100 points leaves room for the
simpletons to voice or pen their
complaints.
In his last two or three
seasons at UCLA he was the
constant subject of criticism, as

It was always a source of
wonder for me how he, and
Robinson for that matter,
endured the constant ambush
of letter-writers, and the press
as well. ·
He almost fell into the trap
recently when the Dallas
Cowboys enticed him to return
to coaching. This time Donahue
was lucky. The Cowboys would
not really match or better what
he's getting now .to just hop
around the cowitry in the fall
and lend a few observations on
a telecast.
That lucky streak continues
·with his ongoing affair with
Newport Beach, and it
overflows into the BBC th.is
morning, as this year's "30"
gets a chance to rub elbows
with a fellow who knows all
about "Class.•

witnessed last year's teammate,
Eric Solis, break the school record
in the boys 800 meters, it made
quite an impression in more ways
than one.
• 1 just remember how Eric took
it,• Hancock said. •He was so
humble about it, and he's defi-
nitely my role model as far as atti-
tude goes.•
Hancock, whose personal best
in the 800 (1:56.7) is not far from
Solis' school-record clocking set
last spring (1:54.9), appeared to
be in top form Tuesday in the
Pacific Coast League track and
field preliminaries at Irvine High.
Hancock, trying not to place
too much emphasis on the record,
blew away the competition in the
800 and 1,600, winning both
heats and qualifying No. 1 for the
finals in both events.
His time of 2:01 .8 in the second
heat of the 800 put him ahead of
University's Martin Brix (2:02.5),
who won the first heat. But in the
1,600, Hancock will face a famil-
iar foe in the final in Estancia's
Alberto Munoz.
Hancock's 4:30.9 was the
meet's best qocking, while
Mcinoz won his heat 1n 4:31.7,
beating Brix (4:36.8). -'•--"I'm getting back," nancock
said Jokingly of the friendly rival-
ry with Munoz. whose cross coun-
try team topped Hancock's Mesa
team during the fall. ·

season to his grandfather, who
has been suffering from recent

"He'd come to my track meets
all the time," Price said. "But my
senior year he hasn't been able to
come out and see me. He can still
hear, but he can't talk, and when
I told him I was.running the hur-
dles for him, he just burst into
tears.•

was also a heat winner in the 200
(23.1), while teammate Edwin
Martinez qualified for the finals in
the 400 (53.6), finishing second in
his heat.

IRVINE -Since suffering a Hll•w

season, Costa Mesa High
senior Gegi V~ De Walker has never been
quite the same.
Throughout the track and field campaign,
Van De Walker has continued to experience
problems with nose bleeds and has been
unable to train sufficiently for the 800 and
1,600 meters.
So last week, the night before the Pacific
Coast League coaches' meeting to seed the
athletes, Mesa Coach John Carney decided
to pull a fast one. Van De Walker hadn't
established a training base in the 800, so Car-
ney switched the veteran distance runner to
the 300 hurdles.
It worked.
Running the hurdles for the first time in
competition on Tuesday in the PCL prelimi-
naries at Irvine High, Van De Walker shocked
the field and won her heat (50.6) to qualify for
the finals.
"We put her in the 300 hurdles because of
her leg speed,· Carney said. ·she's kind of
always wanted to do it, and she's been strong
in the 400 and 800, but not having a base as
the other competitors have, we just talked

Murphy grabbed the fifth slot
in the 200-yard freestyle with a
1:56.88, which is a CIF-quallfying
and All-American consideration.
She will be the second seed in
the 100 free after doing the four
lengths in 54.76, her best perfor-
mance of the season.
Arrow posted a. CIF-qualifying
time of 1:10.52 to earn the fourth
seed for Friday's championship
race in the 100 breastroke. JWlior
Amanda Beard, the 1996 silver
medalist from Irvine was first with
two other Vaqs ahead of Arrow.
The rookie will also compete in
the league championship finals in
· the 200 individual medley as ·she
swam a 2:26.82 in the prelims. ·
Jocelyn Manderino recorded a
personal record with a 26.79 in
the 50 free, ea.ming her eighth in
the prelims so she'll have a shot to
vie for the league title.

Kiersten Johnson will swim for
the consolation title in the IM, as
well, after knocking about five
seconds off her personal best with

a 59.43, a PB in the prelims.
Erin Ball came in 10th in the
100 backstroke with 1:06.02 and
was 14th in the 100 free at 1:00.56
