The new handle should have little effect on service. By Anna Marie Stolley, ~i/y Pilot Attention shoppers -the Bul- lock's store at South Coast Plaza is changing its name to Macy's today, amidst some hoopla. It all starts with a breakfast celebra- tion at 9: 15 a.m . at Wolfgang Puck Cafe, adjacent to the new Macy's, and culminates with a nameplate unveiling at 9:45 a.m. at the store's main entrance. The store opens at 10 a.m. The South Coast Bullock's tsn't the only area store to get a new identity. Federated Department Stores, Inc., which has owned Bullock's since 1992, is now con- verting 23 Southern California Bullock's stores into Macy's. The Bullock's Newport Beach is also slated to take on the new label. The name switch is the start of a push to upgrade the store, say Federated officials, who also reassure Bullock's credit card holders that their Macy's credit cards are coming in the mail. Federated officials say store improvements will result from the name change. But some employ- ees of the South Coast Plaza store don't expect major differences in personnel, service or product selection. "It's still the same store," said Norman Liliaram, a sales associ- ate· for several months in the men's store. "But I think it's a good idea to change the name. Basically, Macy's has a better rep- utation, a big reputation on the east coast." Meanwhile, Bullock's shop- pers interviewed Sunday don't think the name change is a big deal. "They bought the store years ago, it's about time they changed the name," said Ray Infantino, 59, from Huntington Beach, reaching for shirts in the men's store. "I'll still shop here.• "It really makes no difference to me," said Orange resident Chris Madsen, 37, looking through merchandise in the housewares department. "I think everything will be pretty much the same.• The Macy's name change has long been anticipated. After all, Federated recently converted many of its Broadway depart- ment stores. There are currently 98 Macy's stores in six western states including California, said Federated officials. Olympic flame kindles patriotism By Nancy Cheever, Daily Pilot A ceremonial flame barreled through town Sunday, greeting supporters and blazing a patri- otidrail. The 1996 Olympic Torch Relay, on its second day through streets of America, left its mark on Newport Beach as it winded its way down Pacific Coast Highway through Orange County. Well-wishers waved American flags and shouted "U-S-A" at the comer of Superior Avenue, while Olympic flags attached to light poles waved in the early morning breeze. A light mist blanketed the torch- bearers, including several local community heroes and former Olympians. Lynn and Thomas West of Newport Coast came out to suppof\• the Garnes. Their son recently tried out for the 1996 Olympic swim team. "He missed the team by a half a sec- ond,• Lynn West said. "But we're going to Atlanta anyway. We know a lot of the kids who are competing.· A procession of police, including a Georgia State Patrol car, Olympic Commit- tee members, Coca-Cola officials, a wall of photographers and a van full of torchbear- ers all surrounded the flame as it traveled slowly through town. Large crowds packed Pacific Coast 1 Highway, and several area high school bands performed for the rolling festival. At about 5 a .m. in Huntington Beach, about 50 surfers equipped with surfboards welcomed the torch as it arrived at Main Street. That's because political battles, they say, are always won in the middle, not on the fringes. Those who scream the loud- est are ofte11times viewed with great disdain. You know who they are - those who use shock value and unorthodox means to get their point across again and again and again. They come from all ends of the political spectrum. And while their screams offer great appeal to those at the edge of the political land- scape, the mainstream usually just yawns. Smoky backroom deals are being negotiated, serious enough that IRWD this month postponed a date with the state Regional Water Quality Board to have the project approved. Then there's Newport-Mesa school board trustee Wendy Leece's not-so-successful sto- ry of activism. Leece recently made head- lines when she decided to take the hard.line, conserva- tive view that federal pro- grams for the needy ought to be gutted from public school budgets. Tb,e benefit, says Leece and others who share her belief, is freedom from federal regulations and thus more local control for school dis- tricts. That was a wee bit too much f9r our readers, howev- er. Leece's comments prompt- ed the Daily Pilot Readers Hotline tape to whir nonstop, resulting in two days worth of mostly unflattering descrip- tions of her on our Communi- ty Forum pages. Newport Beach Assembly- woman Marilyn Brewer has taken up the cause, sponsoring a bill that if passed would pro- hibit the dumping of treated And while at least one top- ranking Newport Beach city leader told me Friday that the city still has a long way to go before the project is stopped, clearly it is the IRWD on the ropes now. " With the desert land stretching endlessly and the heat showing little mercy, teams from both Newport Beach and Costa Mesa police departments competed last weekend in the 12th aruiual Bak- er to Vegas Run. While neither team brought home the first place trophy in the race, which covers 120 miles in 16 hours and attracts law enforce- ment teams from around the world, Newport Beach came in third place, and Costa Mesa was seventh. Both departments competed in the division for departments which have 150 or fewer sworn officers and includes 13 teams."' Both teams usually place higher, and Newport Beach has carried home the first place trophy sever- al times. #Our guys are getting older and the injuries have taken their toll,• said Newport Beach police Lt. Doug Fletcher, laughing. For Costa Mesa, the coolest thing is not to win but to have a good time trying.
