number of civil lawsuits against
Jason Rausch has grown to five.
The families of Eric Freeman
and David McMillan filed a joint
complaint late Tuesday in
Orange County Superior Court.
The two men sutf ered injuries
last May when a Chevrolet Blaz-
er overturned on Irvine Avenue.
Donny Bridgman, 18, was killed
in the accident. and two others
were severely injured. Rausch
was driving the v~hicle.

NEWPORT BEACH -Taking
over the ndns of the city Wednesday,
a group of Newport Bea.ch high
school students changed the speed
limit on Back Bay Drive to 15 mph,
extended tbe number of beaches that
allow boogie boards and surfing, and
came close to extending the curfew
from 10 p.m. to midnight.
Thirty-eight students from Corona
del Mar and Newport Harbor high
schools held a mock City Council ·
meeting at Newport .Beach Oty Hall
as part of the 10th annual Clty Gov-
ernment Day, which is sponsored by
the Community Services Department.
Students also got to spend three
hours with a dty official in the depart-
ment of their choice.

vate investigator, was the Newport
Beach police cb1ef for the day.

ment Day for many students was the
mock council meeting, which was
complete with gadflies and initating

Overriding some public com-
ments urging them to increase the
speed limit along Back Bay Drive,
the council voted to reduce it from 25
mph to 15 mph.

including six cyclists who ran into
other cyclists. There was also one

amount of kids in Newport Beach
who skateboard.·

quality of life. Many said they sup-
port the concept of a skateboard
course in the city, but not at the
Bonita C.anyon park.
The course was proposed by the
Newport-Mesa Unified School Dts-
tJict as a way to deter the acttvity
from Andersen Elementary Schoof,
which suffers $25,000 worth of
ekateboarding-related damage
each year, said school district

since we go southeast to get to

What I hadn't counted on was
that racers would be spaced pre-
cisely 17 yards apart. This creat-
ed a nearly impenetrable wall of
sweaty, exhausted, butt-drag-
ging runners.

As we tried to drive to church,
my car was number 16 in line,

escaped every-minute-and...a-half
to two minutes, wbJch meant a
wait of 10 minlltes for us. But
we'd left early, so no big deal
Then we tried to get home
after cburch. We came over Ford
Road and crossed JamboTI!e,
passed the high school and the
start and finish lines on Eastbluff
Drive in front of Bergeson
Aquatic Center. Not many peo-
ple were left.
We passed by the south end
of Vista del Oro, but it was barri-
caded. So was Vista del Sol, the
entry street to Eastbluff Wlage
Center, making it more than a
little di.fficult to get to Hughes
market. (I kpow, it's now a
Ralphs, and that's not pleastng
me either.)
We go on by. down to the
north end of Vista del Oro,
where for 27 years we have been
tum1ng in to get to our house. It's
also barricaded and the same
<;op still is there, waving cars
through the stop sign.
I stop and say, with a reason-
ably d vil tongue, "But we Jive in
there, how do we get tn?•
He ftashes me a nasty look
and keeps waving us on. No
acknowledgment. No answer to
my question. Only a glare, as if
to say, "Keep it movin' pal or
you're mine for hmch. •
So we_qo on. Down to Jam-
boree again, tum right, up the
hill to Bison and down through
Eastbluff until we're back where
the same cop st.ill is directing
traffic. Now the barricades are
gone.
Even so, he waves me into a
right tum. I don't go. I stick my
head out the window and loudly
ask, "How am I supposed to get
Newport woman to serve on grand jury

The third time was a charm for
a Newport Beach woman who
was among 19 people chosen
Wednesday to serve on the
Orange County grand jury for
1998-99.
After applying to serve for
three years in a row, Margaret F.
•peg• Morreale, 68, finally was
picked·from among a pool of 30
finalists to serve on the 19-mem-
ber jury. She was the 15th juror
picked in a random drawing.

and nominated by Superior Court
Judge Gail Andler. •r just thought it would be fas-
cinating,• Morreale said.

alternates.
Carol J. Gandy, 62. who was
nominated by Judge Thierry ·
Colaw, was picked as second
alternate.
Karen Evarts, 57, who was
interviewed by Judge David
Carter, was chosen as the seventh
alternate.
The jurors were selected from
each of the county's five supervi-
sorial districts and interviewed by
a panel of judges, according to
Alan Slater, executive officer of
Orange County Superior Court.
Assistant Presiding Judge
Thomas N. Thrasher has asked
the new jurors to submit letters of
interest to serve as foreperso~ by
May 29. The grand jury foreper-
son will be designated in June,
and the jury will be impaneled
July 1.
Morreale said she does not
want to be forewoman of the jury,
which meets Mondays through
Thursdays and issues indictments
Fridays.
"My inte rest would be to serve
on committees dealing with chil-
dren and fiscal responsibility,·
she said.
Morreale was Laguna Beach
city treasurer from 1972 to 1980
and then ·worked as credit man-
ager for Ford Equipment Leasing
in El Toro, retiring in 1992.
She received her master's
degree in public administration
with an emphasis on finance and
personnel from Cal State Fuller-
ton in 1976.
Morreale has been a docent at
Bowers Museum 1n 'Santa Ana for
two years.
She and her husband, Charles,
have two sons, Steven, 43, a
senior production manager for
Levi Strauss & Co., and Philip, 40,
vice president of Santa Barbara
Bank and 'Ihlst. They also have
two grandchildren.

out of orbit Tuesday and
knocked out service for most of
the naUon'• 38 million pagen
had local police and fire offidalJ
and bllliness people scrambling
to stay in touch without their
electronic lifelines. ·

The nationwide beeper
blackout was triggered about
3:20 p.m. Tuesday when a Hugh-
es Space and Communications
Galaxy IV satellite that serves
milllons of pager customers
across the nation lost contact
with transmitters on the ground.
Almost immediately, an esti-
mated 90% of the pagers in the
nation went dead. Some Internet
web sites, television broadcasts
and bank ATMs also were
affected, officials said.
On Wednesday, most pagers
were back on, while others flick-
ered in and out of service as
paging companies worked on
getting a backup satellite in
place and full service restored to
all ihetr cuttomen by later in the
day.
Meanwhile, police and fire

'We're down along with
everybody else," said Costa

detectives, SWAT-team mem-
bers and others on special
assignment away from the office
-carry pagers serviced by
PageNet, the nation's largest

Patrol officers generally do
not carry city-issued pagers,
because they stay in touch with
dispatchers through hand-held
radios or computers hooked to
remote telephone lines in their
squad cars, Smith said. ·u the phone lines or our cel-
lular phones· went down, that
would be a lot bigger problem,"
Smith said.
The same was true in New·
port Beach, where all of the
Police Department's pagers were
knocked out, prompting phone
calls to officers at home to tell
them to stay in touch by phone
until the pagers came back on
line.
"We have no pagers,• said
Newport Beach police Lt.

tors, medical technicians and
nurses wear pagen to stay in
touch, escaped disaster from the
nationwide beeper failure, offi-
cials said.

because we're not reliant on the
satellite system that was impact-

tion of service for us. "

A judge Wednesday ordered I three people accused of stalking a
jewelry saleswoman in Newport
Beach to stand trial in Orange
County Superior Court.
After a preliminary hearing,
Carlos Moreno Rey, 30, Predy
Guzman, 27, and Lilana San-
doval, 19, all of Los Angeles, were
ordered to return to court June 2
for arraigrunent. They are each
charged with one count of con -
spiracy to commit robbery. U con -
victed, they face a maximum of
five years in prison.
The suspects were arrested
April 30 by Newport Beach police
officers who followed them to
Long Beach after a jewelry sales-
woman complained that she bad
been stalked by several people in
two cars for several days.
Police began a surveillance of
two can near Fashion Island and
arrested the three suspects in one
car. Their alleged accomplices in
the second vehicle eluded police,
however. Several suspects remain
at large, police said.
The suspects are believed to
be part of a larger ring that tar-
gets jewelry brokers and waits for
an opportune moment to rob their
victims, police said.

I ts ortginat lure was the cook·
ies. Exceptional chocolate
chip, scrumptiout hortbread,
palate·pleasing peanut butter -
the smell of baking cookies llUlk·
ing almost every passer·by stop
for more than just a whiff.
But these days, Cookie Clas-
sics is a full· blown lunch desti·
nation, with selections of sand-
wiches, salads and soups round-
ing out its small but dellghUul
menu.
In the same Newport Beach
location for 10 years, the tiny
restaurant sits right next to the
Riverside Avenue post office and,
with its friendly, quaint abnos·
phere, feels somewhat out of
place in the bustling strip mall.
The shop has only two tables,
and a counter overlooking the
fast·paced parking lot. An at-
. home feel and displays of home-
made goodies give the place the
look of Mom's kitchen. The small
staff has been there for years,
making the food quality and ser-
vice consistently good. And all
the baked goods are made right
there ln the back kitchen.
While the cookies are lt11l a
big draw, Cookie Clalllc9 puts
out one heck of a sandwich as
well. Prom turkey to egg aalad to
cunted chicken. the sandwiches
are giant and yummy.
I recently stopped by for a
Saturday-afternoon lunch after
browsing at Roger'• Gardens
with my sister. We were dred
and hungry but were soon satb·
fied with orden of a Big 1\lrkey
($5.75), toasted tuna ($5.50) and
take·home ~sandwich ($4.50)
for my brother·in·law.
The Big Turkey certainly was
big, piled high with sllc:ed .
turkey breast, avocado, tomato,
cheese, sprouts and with other
vegetables.
The tuna was delicious.-
white meat not too heavy on the
mayonnaise -and had just the
rlgbtaxnountofavocado,cuCUDl-
ber, pickle and onion spread to
the comers of the fresh squaw
bread.
MThey've learned the art of
making a sandwich,• my sister
said, commenting on the shop's
craft of first filling the middle of
the bread with the larger items
and working out so that the stuff
doesn't squash out when you
take a bite.
There's a standout lunch spe·
cial of turkey breast sandwich,
potato chips and choice of soda,

spoke for the group before he
was offered a contract by Simon

have attended the programs, and

The event, operated by the
Newport Harbor Area Chamber
of Commerce, radically changed
its format this year with men's
and women's pro winners and
the crowning of the city's first
amateur champion (Chris Veitch
of Irvine).
Lovejoy, whose club is a
chamber member, volunteered
for the task of rules offidal as
Eric Woods, the former Corona
del Mar High football
quarterback and two-time Order
of Merit champion on the
Canadian Tour, shot 4-under 67
and captured the men's pro title,
winning $800 and a Breitling
watch (worth an estimated
$3,000) ..

So it is no surprise that the 1Tojans
possess 51 of 168 qu.a.llfying spots and
are poised to defend their title at the
Newport-Mesa District 1Tack and
Field Championships today at New-
port Harbor High at 3 p .m.
-Te)Vinkle, which bas won the last
14 district titles, will count on eighth
grader Luis Segoviano to defend his
title in the 600-yard run, Segoviano
qualified almost four seconds faster
than bis closest competition, team-
maU! Giovanni Reyes.
The 'Ifojan.s also count on a strong
performance by Juel Goff in the 5-4
and under division. Goff.qualified first
in the 100, the 180 and the long jump.
Ensign bas the best chance at end-
ing TeWinkle's reign. The SeeBees
qualified 46 times in the boys events.
Ensign stands a good chance to
defend its girls cbampions'hip in what
should be a close battle between the
SeeBees, Corona del Mar, Dwyer of
Huntington Beach, and TeWinkle.

The resurgent boys volleyball team,
expected to make another CIF title run, as
~~811 as the continued exploits of a CdM 1,600-
meter relay team (vying Saturday at the CIF
Division II Finals), have also contributed to a
Jess-than-complete turnout for Freeman and
his staff.
• "That happens, and that's all right," said an
~derstanding Freeman. "It's nice to see our
other sports having success.•
Among those unavailable, as yet, due to
. postseason participation in other sports, are
baseball standouts Mark Hatfield, Nate Lem-
merman and Alex Bottom, as well as volley-
. ball star Dennis Alshuler.
· Returning junior Mike Bergey, the incum-
bent at the quarterback position, has gained
his release from baseball workouts this week
to work on his football fundamentals. But he
will rejoin the baseball team for Friday's, and
any subsequent, game.
Hunter MacDonald, a member of the afore-
mentioned relay team, has gotten in some
football work, before departing to attend late-
aftemoon track workouts.
But even without a full complement of what
he estimated at 50 athletes, Freeman reports
early progress toward improvement from a 2-
8 season that ended with six straight losses.
·1 really think we're a lot more focused,"
Freeman said. "The kids are understanding
more and things seem to be sinking in. They

The former relates to a shift to a more ground-
oriented offensive scheme.
"We'{e going to a lot more two-back for-
mations than we had last year," he said. "And
were going to run the ball a lot more."
Despite the noteworthy absences, Freeman
said strong leadership has been provided by
the likes of Justin Shea, Curt Sumner, Steve
Witt and Brett Wiseman, all linemen.
That leadership was also a consistent
theme in the( weight room all off-season,
according to Freeman.
"We had some guys not only willing to lead
by example, but to step up and tell their team-
mates the things that are important and the
.things they expect them to work hard at. And
I think we worked a lot harder in the weight
room because of it."
Freem&n, whose lone varsity staff addition
is former Estancia head coach Eq Blanton,
said his assistants have also used the off-sea-
son to develop their knowledge of the game.

ing up things, which will all help," Freeman
said.
It will also help, of &ourse, when the spring
sports start feeding their athletes back onto
the football field.
Freeman said spring drills will run thiough
June 13.

and about five or six videos on

throughout the country and
coaches are developing different

Unlike last year, Howell has
required his players to lift through
spring drills and he reports a
sound work ethic in the strength

"He tells me stories,• said

Collins has learned plenty of
late, including an increased
emphasis on coming to the net
behind his increasingly powerful
serve. ·
"He has an all-around game,
but he's working on being more
aggressive,# Mang said. "He has
a big serve, and he's working on
volleying-more. Serve and volley
is the toughest to 1earn, but he's
got everything else.•
Among his many strengths is
Collins', well, strength.
"I've been lifting weights for
about 2112 years and I work out
five times a week," Collins said.

like to think it's paying off for
me, especially late in the match."
'Ihle to form, Collins is
unwilling to forecast much in the
way of individual success in this
year's CIF individual tournament,
as well as the Southem
California 18s regionals, sched-
uled June 19-20.
But he has targeted a college
terinis scholarship as a tangible
goal, and is encouraged by his
burgeoning-success.
"I'm happy," he said,
"because each year, my ranking
and results get a little better."
At this rate, Collins may soon
find it difficult to convince even
himself he's ripe for defeat.
