The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Ross Johnson (R- lrvine), would create a permanent annuity where funds for regular bay dredging would accumulate at a rate of $400,000 per year. Patrick Joyce, a Johnson spokesman, said the mon- ey would come from state coffers. City Manager Kevin Murphy, who has long dreamed of .a permanent solution to the bay dredging problem, was delighted to hear the news. #We are extremely pleased and ecstatic over this latest development,· Murphy said. #We've always known Sen. Johnson and AssemblywomanJMarilyn) Brewer a.re real friends of Upper Newport Bay, and this proves it again.• The bill must be passed in the state Assembly before being considered in next year's budget, Joyce said. •The fact is that this could have been defeated, and the result would be no possibility of getting funded,• Joyce said. #We think it's very likely it will get in.• Officials have said the Back Bay would be in good shape if it could be dredged about every five years. This year's dredging project, which only last week cleared a major fund- ing hurdle, was the first one in a decade. "The manufacturers are ignor- ing us for big profits,• Blek said. "The silent march says enough is enough." The pairs of shoes being deliv- ered to Bryco Anns were donated by families and friends of victims of gun violence. The shoes sym- bolize the loss of life and a call to the gun industry to be more responsible in the way they design and market their products, Blek said, adding that he would like to see fewer guns and perma- nent identification markings on all weapons. Bryco Arms was selected by the group because members claim it is one of the leading pro- ducers of low-quality handguns. According to the federal Bureau of Alcohol. Tobacco and Firearms, one of the top hand- guns traced to crimes in 1995 was made by Bryco. The end of the march will be marked by a poem read by 13- year-old Shanelle Johannessen of Rancho Santa Margarita, who was wounded last summer by a stray bullet. It looted as if the con· tract could be claimed, but when declarer followed the rtrst put of the above ldv~ Vici led a low sJ*)e lO the jack, which won. East showed out and declarer had to lose two 11\Jmp tricu. Switching the Ea-West llUmp holding and heeding the stc· ond nugget of our introduction by leading a club to the ace and a spade to the lting would have fa.red no bet· ter. Should West shows out on this trick, declarer must again lose two spade tricks. . TilC com:ct way to tackle trumps as to l&JIOR both pieces of advice. Sinoc only a 4--0 trump split poses • prob- lem, declarer should lead a trump honor from hand at trick two. If East fails to follow, declarer continue$ with 1 low trump and finesses the seven. If West shows out. declarer next leads a trump to the jack in dummy, and then can get to the table with the ace of clubs to take the marltcd finesse for the ten of trumps. Too easy for words.
