By Evan Henerson., Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -Despite claims to the contrary by the city manager and police chief, a city police officer investigated for drinking in a bar while still on duty has never had a "previous chemical dependency problem," the officer's wife says. The officer's wife has asked City Manager Kevin Murphy lo explain references to her husband's alleged "chemical dependency problem" in a March 28 letter Murphy sent lo District Attorney Michael Capizzi. Murphy, she claims, has not explained the matter to hef satis- faction· and has not returned her phone calls. 1'l'm not aware of this informa- tion and nobody has bothered to tell me where it came from," said the officer's wife, who asked to remain anonymous because of the nature of the allegations. "Even if it were in there, what righ t does he have to make it public?." In January, the city's Civil Ser- vice Board overturned nearly all discipline against the officer imposed by Police Chief Bob McDonru.J. That decision prompted the Police Department's manage- ment union to request an investiga- tion into potentially improper or ille- gal contacts between Civil Service Board members, Chief McDonell and Mayor Jolm Hedges. The recently concluded inves- tigation revealed no impropri- eties. However, the District Attor- ney's office is conducting a sepa- rate investigation into the charges against the mayor. But it was the letter to Capizzi -obtained by the Daily Pilot sev- eral weeks ago -that upset the officer's wife. In that letter, Mur- phy writes, "the Police Chief clar- ified with some Board me mbers the fa~ that the subordinate (offi- cer) had a previous chemical dependency problem which was not presented in detail to the Board during the hearing. "Documents prepared by the supervising Captain and the Police Chief prior to the ... hear- ing reference a previous problem with alcohol and diagnosis of chemical dependency," the lette r continues. The officer's wile said her h us- band has never seen a doctor or received any negatiye evaluations regarding a drug or alcohol-relat- ed problem. Although his name has never been printed, the offi- cer's wife says that she and her husband have been embarrassed since the allegations are known by everyone from family members to fellow Uttle League parents. She was young -late 20s, early 30s. More impor- tant, she was attractive. Instantly I perked up. I may be old but I am , not blind. The Sea Kings, ranked No. 7 in the final county poll, ham- mered Redondo Union in the opening round, 15-1, 15-1, 15-4, in less than an hour as 6-foot-4 9utside bitter Brian Coleman had nine kills. ,; · -Senior'lobn Coon (seven kills), junior Blair Hoppe (six) and sophomore Greg Burden (four) helped the Sea Kings' balanced attack. Senior Derek Newcomer, an All-Sea View"League setter, has been outstanding in the second half, while freshman· Dennis Alshuler -who came up from the junior varsity early in the year when the CdM rotation was depleted with injuries and illnesses -has been solid, in spite of inexperience. "They're a very solid team and they don't have a lot of weak- nesses," Conti said of'his team's opposition tonight in the CdM gym. "Offensively, they1ook like they're very strong," Conti con- tinued. "They have good size and athleticism. But I think size-wise, we match. up with them fairly well.
