'June gloom' brings
rairi ·to Newport-Mesa
•But forecasters say the
weather should begin to
brighten up today.

NEWPORT-MESA -You've
heard about it. You've seen it.
And now you've felt it.
Commonly known as "June
gloom," the weather condition
that typically brin gs heavy
clouds, has settled in Southern
California because of an unsea·
sonable low-pressure system in
Nevada.
The National Weather Service
reported that Newport Beach
received a slight trace of rain -
about two-tenths of an inch -on
Tuesday. Mostly cloudy skies pre-
dominated most of the clay, with
temperatures in the mid-60s.
. Very few people ventured to
the beach, but Linda Mitchell of
Anaheim decided to make an
afternoon out of it. She spent a
few hours on the sand at 18th
Street.
"It's a crummy day, but J have
the rest of the day off,· she said.
•1 could go to a movie or shop, but
I wanted to come down here and
clear my head.•
Surfers weren't flocking to the
shore either. A southerly cross
swell was producing choppy
waves between 2 and 4 feet,
keeping most surfers out of the
water.
The cold front, which also
caused hail and thunderstorms
across Nevada, is expected to
move out of the area today and
bring clearer skies to coastal com-
munities.

forms, ranging from subtle palrit
brushes on a soft canvas to the
chugging of a 120..ton aane hoist-
ing an enormous steel sculpture
into place.

The art-which will be on dis-
play-through Sept 27 in the area
between Pla7A Tower and the
footbridge across Bl'istol Street -
represents some of the best-
known pieces from the artist. who
one local art gallery owner credit-
ed with redefining abstract struc-
tural sculpture. .
The local exhibit by di Suvero
-whose innovative steel cre-
ations have graced the most hal-
lowed balls of the world's art c:x>m·
munity in Paris, Venice and New
York -represents a milestone for
Orange County's burgeoning arts
community.

Suvero's unique sculptures have
been shown in the United States
outside the prestigious art gal-
leries of New York City.
"It's an incredible coup for
Orange County," said Anton
Segerstrom. general manager of
the Crystal Court shopping center.
Some of di Suvero's drawings
also will be on display at the
Orange County Museum of Art in
Newport Beach through Septem-
ber.
The six sculptures being shown
locally were trucked across coun-
try from their hmne in New York
City and assembled Tuesday in a
parking lot near the Orange
County Pedorming Arts Center
before being lifted into place.
Di Suvero, who was paralyzed
in a 1960 accident when a load of
wood fell on hbn and broke bis
back, still JDakes many of the
large pieces OD his own.
After the accident, he was con-
fined to a wheeld>air but now
walks upright with the assistance
of crutches.

A 29-year-0ld man was arrested
after a two-car accident in Newport
Beach in which he and three other
people were injured, police said
Tuesday.
Arturo Ruiz of Fontana was
booked on suspicion of felony
drunken driving after the wreck at
9:19 p.m. Monday in the 1000
block of W~ Coast Highway,
police said.
Investigating officers said Ruiz

or a kite," said Bruce GUDlher,
curator of the Orange County
Museum of Art. "It keeps moving
as the wind blows."
"Yoga" also is unique because
di Suvero formed the U-shaped
steel portion without blow torches
and harnessed the weight of the
steel beam to bend itself.
Di Suvero said molding such
large pieces of steel into art
demands C!'eativity as well as 11
deep UDd hl~ of physics.
•'Jbe center cl gtavity is an
invisible point that keeps chang-
ing constantly,• he said. •Any bal-
let dancer can tell you that It's a
concept really, but it's a very true
thing."

me -especially the gracious
part -but my wife wasn't

Since she rejected this con-
cept rather summarily, I read her
an explanation from an official
of Focus on the family pointing
out that •submission is not
something a wife is doing
because she's commanded to do
it, but something she will want
to do as the response to the right
kind of loving leadership from
him.·
I realized too late that this left
me wide open to a critique of .
my "loving leadership,• but my
wife chose to ignore the open-
ing, and I thought it best tQ let it
rest there.
I hope next year's convention
won't take up the subject of
Council retains
traffic-impact fees
The City Council bas decided
not to adjust the fees it charges
developers for additional traffic
their projects may create down
the road.
The charges, commonly
known as traffic-impact fees, are
paid to the city by builders of all
residential, commercial and
industrial projects. Officials use
the money to pay for street main-
tenance, widening and resurfac-
ing.
Last summer, the council
adopted a traffic impact fee of
$150 per car trip generated by a
project. But at the request of
Councilman Joe Erickson, the
slavery, about which Leviticus
25:-'4 says firmly: •Both thy
bondmen, and thy bondmalds,
which thou shalt have, shall be
of the heathen that are round
about you; of them shall ye buy
bondmen and bond.maids ... and
they shall be your possession.
And ye shall take them as an
inheritance for your children
after you ... "

more than two decades ago when
I did a magazine profile on him.
He later c.ame out and talked to
my film class at UCI, was enter-
tained in my home and invited
my family and me backstage at
the Ahmanson when he was per-
forming in •The Crucible.•
As a result of all this, I bad
several serious discussions with
him about collaborating on a
book, which he finally decided
to write himself.
I haven't talked with him
since then, but I'm astonished at
the militant gun advocate I see
today. He always was dead seri-
ous -and seriously committed
-to his convictions, but the

years distant from the liturgy of
the NRA.
Either he's changed radically
-in the fullest sense of that
word -or my earlier percep-
tions were shallow indeed. At
any rate, I do not wish him well
in his latest role.

The 30th anniversary of
Robert Kennedy's murder in Los
Angeles produced a spate of rec-
ollections about that dreadful
evening and the man himself.
He remains an enigma, mostly
because of the drastic changes
perceived in him after his broth-
e r was assassinated. People who

council later asked the city staff
to reconsider the fee and return
with other options on how to
assess developers for traffic
impacts.
On Monday, the council dis-
cussed the amount it charges
developers for traffic impacts but
left the flat-rate, $150-per-trip
amount in place. The council
could have tinkered with the fee
and switched to a percentage-
based fee that is charged accord-
ing to the dollar value of the pro·
ject.
Two of the proposed methods
would have charged developers
.5% of the value of their project
rather than the per-trip flat rate.
The council also considered
increasing the current fee to the
highest allowable amount,
which is $281 per car trip gener-
ated.
Historical sites,
buildings to be listed
The Costa Mesa City Council
unanimously voted this week to
hire a consulting firm to compile
a comprehensive list of all histor-
ical sites and buildings in the city
that are more than 50 years old
for possible listing as state histor-
ical sites.
The council allocated up to
$10,000 from the current fiscal
budget to hire Planning Consul-
tants Research of Santa Monica
to spearhead city efforts to iden-
tify and categorize all historical

Eye contact, touch and talk
were real, constant and quite
personal. There was a kind of
missionary aura about these for-
ays into masses of people, and
be was received that way -
with honest-to-God love. I won't
join the speculation about what
kind of president he would have
made, but I know l was privi-
leged to see something very spe-
cial in those last days of Robert
Kennedy. It was something I
haven't seen since and, 5adly,
don't expect to see again.

I note that one reason Robert
sites in Costa Mesa.
Officials hope to comb old
building records, newspaper
clippings and other documents
to identify buildings and sites
that are 'at least a half-century
old in order to qualify for listing
with the state Department of
Historical Preservation.
The consulting firm, which
was one of three bidding for the
local job, was selected because
of its experience in the area and
proximity to Costa Mesa. The
group will start with a meeting
with the city staff and then begin
searching for historical sites to be
submitted to the state for consid-
eration for listing.

age to 101 teachers.
"It's sad in a way, but I'm ready
to go on,# she said.
But Kates w on't be able to stay
out of the classroom for good, as
she has already promised Hokan-
son she would he lp her out when-
ever she can.
"She better be back," Hokan-
son said, jokingly.

S'WllIDinlng and water polo at Corona del Mar

When be was a freshman. Oeding bad
lanned to play soccer. Talked out of playing
occeY, Oeding tried water polo and fell in love
with the sport.
Oeding ls one of the captains of the U.S.
national water polo team and will lead bis
teammates in the U.S. Cup at Newport Beach
wluch starts today.
"I truly love the quickness of the game:
Oedlng sa.id. "It combines swimming with tac-
tics comparable to those of soccer. There are
just so many attractive things about the
game.•

Oeding is currently pursuin,g a maste(s
degree in physical education at Azusa Pacific
University. Oeding has also been tht! head
men's w ater polo coach at Orange Coast Col-
lege Cor three years. Owing his tenure, Ced-
ing has seen the Pirates program continue to
grow.
·w e finished fourth in my first season,•
Oeding said. "Then we finished second and
this last season, we won the (Orange Empire)
conference title.•
One reason Oedlng keeps playing at the
national level ls he can continue to learn more
a.bout the sport and its many changes so that
he can be a better coach. Another reason is
the close kinsh.ip with U.S. hedd coach, John
Vargas.
"1 kept playing after Atlanta because Var-
gas was coaching and I wanted to learn,·
Oeding said. "What John has taught me has
largely influenced my own coaching philoso-
phy. I use many of the concepts and drills used
by the national team, JUSl to a lesser degree or
intensity .• Ceding was part of three ClF Southern
Section champions at Corona del Mar and
was named CIF Player of the Year as a senior.
He also helped UC Berkeley wm three NCAA
titles and was nominated for Player of the Year
his senior year. Oeding also was a part of the
junior national team and later won a spot on
the U.S. national squad at an open tryout in
1993.
Bad luck plagued the standout later lhat
year. Because or a partially tom rotator cuff,
Oeding was out unW September 1994.

say, 'This is the way lhe game should be
played.' • Vargas said. "Chns has good fun-
damentals and is always under control. He
was one of those guys who you Wdtch develop
and you know that lhey are going to be a spe-
cial player."

Oeding's current goals. After that, the 26-year-
old isn't sure if he will continue competing at
this level, or concentrate on teaching and
Oeding looks forward lo pldying the U.S.

Michael Dreyfw and Susan Weir of Prudential California Realty have listed
the landmark Brown home, located on N ewpon Harbor. The original h~,
built in 1928, has recently been renovated to include first-class modem
amenities while still reflecting the charm of the late 1920's.
Built in 1928, the Brown home retains the look of a bygone era. In the late
l 920's most of the activity in Newpon Beach centered in the area of current day
Newpon encompassed by 18th to 40th streets. Corona del Mar 'and Balboa
Island had a handful of houses. Lido Isle, Bay Shores and Beacon Bay did not
even exist.
In this atmosphere, a Pasadena architect named Brown, decided to
construct a house near the end of the Peninsula, in the presenc-Oay Peninsula
Point neighborhood. At the time, only one other house nad been built . on
Peninsula Point. Mr. Brown helped design a five bedroom house that featured
sleeping porches on the bay off of both the upper and lower stories of the house.
Today, the house has been restored to reflect its original character. pale
and redwood floors have been refinished, double-hung windows have been
reworked and original porcelain sinlcs have been retained. The current owners
have added period hardware and lighting throughout 'the home as well as period
furnishings.
In its renovated form, the house has five bedrooms, six baths and measures
approximately 4,200 square feet. Visitors enter the house under a pergola and
through an oversized, custom, white laminate door into a lush brick courtyard.
A second door opens into the house and a small foyer with dark oak floors.
From here, guests enter a living room that affords sweeping bay views through
the downstairs-sleeping porch.
The sl~ing porch itself features the same oak floors as the living room and
is amently conflgured as an additional sitting area. Huge custom sliding doors
open the entire porch to a r_edwood declc. that runs the length of the house. A
bar-b-que area is located on the north side of the house and sunken patio on the
south side.
11').Side, the state-of-the-art kitchen connects to the dining area by sliding
pocket doors. The kitchen has a restaurant quality range and salamander, two
Sub-zero refrigerators, a clear ice-make~, a wine refrigerator, a reverse osmosis
water purifying system, lnsta-hot water dispenser, two top-of-the-line
dishwashers, one with silver tray, and a separate freezer.
An office with private patio and maid's quarters complete the downstairs.
Upstairs, the house features a master bedroom, which runs the length of the
bayfront. The ~ter bath floors are covered with custom ceramic tile andtthe
walls laced with tile mosaic. The bath features a marble top. Two additi~I
bedrooms are located upstairs. One. a perfect guest bedroom, the other, a h,uge
dormitory sized room with its own playfully decorated bath.
An outdoor landing connects the upstairs to a bonus room that currently
contains an entertainment system complete with surround sound, digital
videodisc and most of the latest bells and whistles.
All of the home's systems have been completely reworked. An advanced
telephone, stereo and alarm system has all be pre-wired and connected
throughout the house.
The Brown H ouse will be offered for sale in early June 1998. The home's
owners have agreed to entertain offers berween $3,500,000 and $4,500,000. The
home's furnishings are included in the offering.
