Daily Pilot E stancta High girls coaches Charlie Appell and Paul Kirby believed their respec- tive cross country and basketball teams were good enough to compete in the post- season. Both had a point. Kirby's unit, however, came up one point shy in a regular-season ending Pacific Coast League road loss to University High, dropping it to fifth place. A win would have put the Eagles into a third-place playoff with Laguna Hills. Instead, they turned in their uni- forms. Appell's squad did the same following its fifth-place finish at the PCL finals, though he made a compelling case for an at-large invitation to the CIF Southern Section Division IV preliminaries. The Eagles had, Appell point- ed out to section offidals, defeat- ed t t of the 30 teams who took part in the Division N prelims. They were, however, denied the chance to extend their season. Similar postseason chances were scarce for Estancia in the other six team sports, in which the Eagles won 5 of 50 league con- tests. Basketball standouts Francia Dill2 and Lisa Steinfeld each earned first-team All-PCL recog- nition, as did senior Orange County soccer all-star Jennifer Porter and freshman softball pitcher Joanna Danner. Diaz was All-Newport-Mesa District, as was Danner, who was joined on the softball dream team by te.ammates am Fricker and Stacy Barnett.
