I have an unfortunate ten- dency to become a trifle · irreverent when talking about people. Not Joe Beek. I stand in awe of the man·and ~ accomplishments. I oPce Sald that the two. most impor- tant things that ever happened on Balboa Island were Joe Beek and the Balboa Island Punting and Scub.ing Society. · I'll stand by that touch of hyperbole. Joe Beek first swfaced as a young graduate of Pasadena's lbroop Institute, now Cal Tech. The flamboyant W.S. Collins, promoter extraordinai:re, the developer of Balboa Island, hired the young man to build a bridge connecting the island to the mainland. Ob, it wasn't the great con- crete and steel structure of Mr. Collins' extravagant claims. Nevertheless, it was a bridge, a narrow, wooden structure, which connected the island to the mainland. After he com- pleted the bridge Joe Beek was off and running. His acmmplishm.ents were nothing less than amazing. He became the town's first harbor master when the primaiy duties of that offim was to run down to the channel mouth on days of big swf and save people whose boats have overturned. An ardent yachtsman, be was an early commodore of the Newport Harbor Yacht Oub. He was one of the organizers of the Balboa Yacht Club. He was on the town's first library [;" --.-T .... -~~-.. , . robe rt gardner board and on the first Newport Harbor School Board. He was one of the founders of the first Newport Harbor School Board. He was one of the founders of the Newport Balboa Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was, for many years, the secretary of the California state Senate. He was the developer of Beacon Bay and Harbor Island. The list goes on and on. While Mr. Collins had secured the first penn.it from · the city to operate a ferry from Balboa to Balboa Island, be did practically nothing about it although be promised nothing Jess than a ferry that would carry eight cars. Collins was big on promises, not so good on carrying through. After Collins gave up. Joe secured a permit and the real saga of the Balboa Island Ferry began. His first ferry boat was a clumsy outboard named the Ark. It carrted oars just in case the motor gave out. This was followed by ferries carrying such hames as the Pat Peny and the Joker. In his ear- ly days, Joe, being Joe, did his own dredging for the feay landing. lb.is doesn't mean operating a large mechanical dredger by himseli. he would walk out into the bay, fill a dredge bucket by hand, then tum it m:er to his wife, Carol, who hauled it in and dumped it to fill out the landing. The Balboa Island Perry is still a Beek family operated enterprise but I am not aware that Seymour Beek, who man- ages the ferry on behalf of the family, does bis own dredging. On the other hand, being a Beek, maybe he does. I'll ask him next time I see him. Joe was a superlative boat handler. He had to be to han- dle all those overturned craft in the channel mouth when he was harbor master. And so, when a chubasco roared with- out warning out of the Gull of California on Sept. 20, 1939, Joe was in Santa Monica. He had started for home when the chubasco hit. The chubasco overturned several boats in the Catalina channel. Joe, in the Vamos, which the family still owns, rescued sev- eral boats and their occupants that memorable day. Joe's story is too big for one column. Thus. next issue I will take up the saga of Joe Beek. the man who refused to let a little thing like age keep him from military service. • ROBERT GARDNER Is a retired judge and a rl!Sident of Corona del Mar. School officials say they won't test for steroids because of the cost. They estimate the cost for the urinalysis for drugs on Corona del Mar's list at about $18 per athlete. To test for steroids and other known perfonnanc;e-enhandng drugs would cost about $80 per athlete. By 1975 with the Theriot Gang ln full swing, Harbor was dueling with any and all on a squared-off buJs. No one, not even a Santa Ana or Muir (Pasadena), felt comfortable on the same field with Harbor. Individual achievements were one thing, teem acoompl!abments another, the latter perhaps Hailey's true love on the track. "I still remember our last champ1omhip, • Aid Halley. The Daily Pilot always liked to dope out our meets and the writer (Phil Roa) had UI finllhlng third. ' Drainage problems at the track were the ultimate blow and with no support from anyone in the district, he packed 1t in, most assuredly at least 10 years before his time. "I finally got John Nicoll (the longtime district superintendent with a reputation for a dislike of athletics) to come out and see the problem first·hand." recalled Hailey. "His response was, ~well, this drainage problem is only a problem when it rains.' It was the final straw, and the end of one era for Bob Hailey; two weeks later a second era would come his way in the form of a wicked injwy across his legs in an auto-related accident, the victim of a hit·and-run drunk leaving him crushed on the pavement. That was 17 years, 19 operations and 125 days in the hospital ago, and although life has never been the same for him, the Hailey Comet continues its bright flare. On the surface he is but a shadow of the quarter-miler, pole vaulter and high jumper he once was as a prep, as well as offensive end on the football team. But the fires that Hailey lit under his charges all those years continue as he steps down from teaching, and he and Dorene look forward to new challenges. •1 get my 30-minutes of exerdse every .day with the stationary bike (using only his arms and right leg)," said Hailey. "It's boring as hell, but ... • In tetms of retrospect, aside from the great accomplishments, there 11 the ever·lingering humor of human events which intertwined itself throughout the Sellon' long ride. Theriot, to become a sul>-3:55 miler, was the constant and ultimate practical joker ol the bunch. but it was a no.joke all-out duel involving Theriot and Kuna.sch one evening which Hailey still recalls most vividly. He finally broke up the fight between the two in the parking alN ot a supennarket, and it wun't funny, but Hailey, alwaya the father-figure, remembers ll with metter"Of·fec;t recan. blamlng no ooe. ·rn tell you uu. eboUt Brian Theriot.• Mid He.Uev. •tte MYW mbMd a pracb. And if you had worked hard and still fallen short of the mark, you at least enjoyed the satisfac- tion of having given it your best. Coach Hailey attracted and retained talented assistants who were quality guys. Outside of my parents, three people have influ- enced my life in dramatic ways, and they were all on Coach Hai- ley's staff. One, of course, was "Uncle Bob" himself. Jett Pierose was my sprtntcoach,Algebrateacherand academics mentor. Hank Cocmane coached field events for Coach Hailey, but also was an incredibly knowledgeable and giving receivers coach in football. In my experience, great coach- es (such as Bill Walsh and George ~ifert) thrive among talented assistants, while lesser coaches may be threatened by them. For- tunately for us, Coach Hailey was stimulated by young, ambitious and talented coaches. Coach Hailey was not just a stem task-master. He cared about teaching young minds, as I found out in his biology class (when 1 was more interested in young blondes). He had a wry sense of humor. When I was first asked to run the 440-yard dash I asked one of his many 440-yard dash proteges what was Coach Hailey's strategy for running the quarter mile. He said, "sprint 'as fast you can for the first 330 yards and then start your kick I" I must admit, however, that I remain puzzled to this day over an inexplicable lapse in disci- pline and perhaps judgment. . Why did Coach Hailey allow Bri- an Theriot to label our mile relay baton "Soul Thain" complete with provocatively big block letters and a drawing of a train? I have wonderful memories as a freshman of watching Coach Hailey lead Matt Hogsett, Terry Albritton and their teammates as they battled the likes of Isaac Curtis in the Sunset League. As a senior, I can recall Brian "Flieriot battling with Tom Uoy and Dee Dee Cooper at the State Meet and David Kurrasch duel- ing with ... well, himself. Most importantly, l remember the joy of being a part of a weD- prepared team, of striving for and sometimes achieving ambitious goals. Vlnnle Mulroy Kentfleld. Ca.
