He came to rely on that interaction, Schaffer said. His mood changed for the better only after She found him a new feline. To alleviate some of the stress, Schaffer usually rides a bike or walks to wort. say- ing goodbye to her six cats and two dogs. She is reminded of her mortality almost daily. Clayton, a former . standout in basketball and track and field at Newport Harbor, has • returned borne from BYU after setting a personal record in the triple jump and getting an invitation to the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Finals. She is already making plans to expand on that ~uccess. · •rn take abou\ a month off and spend some ti.me at the beach,• Clayton said. "But then I'll be going to Newport (Harbor) for weight training. I don't want to lose the tone I built this year.• Clayton bas fond memories of her freshman season. Clayton, who was enrolled in the honors program. was impressed with the quality of people that were her classmates and was even more impressed by Ute way BYU - treated its athletes. "They had an academic program that every athlete had to be in," Clayton said. "There is six hours of mandatory study hall and tutors are readily ayailable." The women's track training area included a wall where only. athletes with high enough grade-point-averages were posted. Clayton was also pleased with her development on the track this season. She spent a lot of time, early on, building up stamina, fle.¥ibility, speed and muscle tone. Clayton had a goal this spring, to break 38 feet in the triple jump. She also was named to the All-Sea View RUNNING League team twice . Clayton, in her senior year at Newport, finished second in the Southern Section Division Il finals in the triple jump with a jump of 37-4, just three and a half inches away from her sister Mandy's school record. Clayton, due in part to her basketball abilities, was also named NeWpbrt Harbor's Athlete of the Year. Clayton averaged 12.4 points and 7 .2 rebounds per game. . Despite all the things that M.E. Clayton enjoyed about BYU, there was one thing she could not get a real handle on, the weather patterns of Utah, which were, or course, complic~ted by the effects of El Ni.Do. "Some days during·spri.ng workouts, it would be blazing hot,• Clayton said. "Others, it would be kind of cold and once, m the middle of spring, it just started hailing." Absent for much of the winter and spring was snow. "There was only one week whl:!n the snow stayed on the ground," Clayton said.
