Q T Newport Be ach native Gordon Reed worked hard to become a life guard 30 years· ago, now he supervises new recruits N ewport Beach's Gordon Reed remem- bers the days when he and his friends ventured to the--beach and visited his older brother, Payton. Only 10 at the time, Reed fondly looked up to his older sibling, who was monitoring the choppy surl at a lifeguard tower. It still conjures images of empty beaches, long- boards and aromatic barbecues. Reed thought he could be a lifeguard, too. And he was right. Reed, now 51, has nsen through the lifeguard ranks to senior super- visor, a position that oversees younger recruits. But gelting there wasn't easy. He wro. highly motivated to pass the life- ard tes_t although he knew he wasn't the best swim.mer. Then wbenrus twfuorolli-er, Bruce, became a lifeguard 1n 1966, that spurred him on even more. Reed spent mornings paddling in the frigid bay and a fternoons working out in the occ pool. He failed the first test, but the letdown didn't faze Reed. The next year, 1969, Reed stood by his brothers' side as a lif~ard. Perseverance does pay off. "I trained on my own and worked real bard," Reed said. But 1t was easy to be humble just two nights later, when unranked Huntington Beach handed the host Sea Kings, then No. 2 in Orange County behind Harbor, a 15-12, 4-15, 7-15, 15-11, 15-7 'setback. It was CdM's only best-of-five loss outside of the Sea View League and, according to senior Greg Burden, it gave the team's three spanking new starters a serious dose of perspective. ·It showed our younger guys we couldn't go out there and go through the motions and still win, H recalled Burden, who along with junior returning starter Dennis Alshuler and senior Greg Coon were·the other half of the lineup's veteran-newcomer mix.
