In our district, with double ses- $m. we o.re expecting two teachers to meet the deeds of 66 kindergarten students. 4. With as mo.ny demands now being placed 'R->11 the kindergarten child to learn ~ secon<l lan- m!&Q• and become successful readers, it is intteas- hours and 20 minutes. Many school districts are turning to a full-day kindergarten program. Our school district needs to explore that option. 5. Exit standards need to be developed for each grade level, including kindergarten, but retention should not be the option. Research has not shown retention to be beneficial in many situations. We need to utilize summer school and intra-sessions for both remediation and enrichment. Some schools in our district are already beginning to do this. 6. We need more personnel to help with remedi- ation. We need more school nurses, psychologists and resource specialists. Children with learning problems can be identified in kindergarten, even in preschool, but often resour~s for handling these referrals are so lim1ted that many students are referred year after year before they receive the help they need. 7. We need before-school and after-school pro- grams available to students who are having diffi: culty with their schoolwork. Often, second-language learners do not have anyone at home who is proficient enough in Eng- lish to help them with their assignments. We need to establish a tutor corps of college students or take advantage of the AmeriCorps Uteracy Program to help students who are falling behind. 8. Most importantly, parents need to take an active role in their children's education -starting with reading to your child on a daily basis from infancy on through child.hood to becoming involved in the clauroam. Parents need to become advocates for their chil- dren'• education. Parents should Join with teachers on ihlilting upon lower class sizes, grade-level exit standa.rdl, the return of summer school and more resouree penonnel for remediation.
