We looked at our unsanded faces, our undrained thighs, our fingers unrelieved by a single sparkle. C learly, we were missing something -and more than carats. We were miss- ing an e ntire city. We mounted our trusty bikes and began our search. First stop: Corona del Mar. the path lo Little Corona. A ragged crocodile of children darted down. to the beach where a member of the Manne Depart- m ent was waiting to educate them on the m agic of tide pools. We caught a glimpse or the bus that brought them -Duarte. No glitz there, but we were in the right area. We rolled along Ocean Boulevard, past houses big and obviously expensive. A door opened. Pastrami, chicken, BBQ Beef & Pork, Turkey Legs, Italian and Polish sausage, Philly.s, Burgers, Hot Dogs.• It's a vegetarian's worst night- mare. My stomach is grumbling. 1 need to eat. But somehow I doubt that garden burgers are a county fair standard. I make my way down one of many areas lined with food boQths. Everywhere I go, all I see is meat, meat and more meat The fried rice has pork in 1t. The fries are covered with chili, the baked potatoes smothered in bacon. I criilge as I pass by a large, quivering slab of beef being roasted on a rotisserie. I begm to feel like Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz." Bratwurst and chicken and com dogs, ob my! What's a vege- tarian to do? If xou find yourself in tlus position, be patient. Believe it or not, there are sorue entrees at the fair that can satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. The first thing I try is the 10- pound bread, which comes with or without pepperoni. I try mak- ing conversation as I order the HMediterranean, • topped with tomatoes, onions and basil. "Does that mean you gain 10 pounds if you eat this?" I ask the concessionaire. He is not amused. The fresh-baked bread -so big it has to be served on two plates -is very filling, but it may be best if shared with many others as an appeb2er. Next I move on to the fned artichoke, eggplant, zucchiru and mushroom stand. I decide on the •combo plate,• a giant mound of battered and fried goodies - your choice. • As t bite into the zucchiru, I feel grease running down my face. I start to sense a theme here. Colossal onion rings, Aus- tralian fried potatoes and egg rolls on a sbck are other meatl~ choices And don't forget the desserts, • which, of course, are always veg- etanan-tnendly.
