By Evan Henerson, Daily Prlot ·' COSTA MESA -The city will pay defense costs for a police offi- cer accused in a $12 million law- suit of shooting a Costa Mesa man, who was carrying an unloaded pellet gun. Antonio De Los Angeles, a Cos- ta Mesa landscaper, has filed the · lawsuit against the city and Costa Mesa police Officer Phil Myers. In August 1994, De Los Ange- les was shot twice after he alleged- ly broke up a fight between sever- al men and his brother. His law- suit, first submitted as a claim to the city in January 1995, alleges Myers shot De Los Angeles as he stood on the front porch of his Raleigh Avenue home. "We'll fight this to the end. We'll defend our officer because he acted properly ... " -JOE ERICKSON was a pellet gun. The landscaper's attorney said De Los Angeles never turned around to face the officers. "He's still having back trouble and he's in physical therapy,• said Leonard Basinger, De Los Ange- les' attorney. "The only difference between a dead De Los Angeles and a live De Los Angeles is where the bullet fell. When you fire twice at somebody's back, you're trying to kill them.• But Costa Mesa Mayor Joe Erickson said the shooting was per- fectly legal and justified and that Myers was acting in self-defense. It seems that the noisy patrons of the Twin Palms are bothering the guests of the hotel. That's interesting. The hotel and the restaurant are 600 feet apart. Balboa's Twin Palms was only six feet from its neigh- bors and I'm not aware of any complaints. Of course, Balboans were pretty tolerant in those days. The owner of Abbott's Villas was an exception. It wasn't a matter of morality. Madam Ruth's "girts• were pretty awful. W ell. they stayed in operation a couple of weeks, then folded. The day they left they all came to the Dragon for a good- bye cup of coffee while they waited for the Pacific Electric to take them to Los Angeles, pre- sumably a more friendly atmos- phere. Senior Justin Kerr, who was pulled down in the box to set up his game-winning penalty kick six minutes into the second 10-minute overtime period, was overcome by emotion in the aftermath of a triumph that eliminated the second-seeded Cavaliers (20-1-1) in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division ill Playoffs. ·1 was just emotionally and physically spent," said the senior Princeton-bound forward, who placed his hands over his eyes in an attempt to conceal tears. Opening the playoffs with a wild card date at Laguna Hills, Kerr piled tape over tom liga- ments in his left ankle to score sailor boys/ 1995-1996 two second-half goals in a 2-1 win. Senior def ender Ryan Yurada marked Mendez effectively and Coach Colin Bouette also praised Garrett Jansma, Ryan Hoover, Jeremy Ellis and Chris Wakim for keving the victory, before he bolted for the airport to catch a flight to Las Vegas for a club tournament. A 1-0 vlctory over Riverside Poly followed as Kerr collected his 11th assist on a Jansma goal and freshman goalkeeper Zach Wells posted two huge saves in the closing seconds to preserve the shutout. Wells stopped a breakaway with 90 seconds left and a penalty kick one minute later to finish with seven saves and become yet another hero in a roster full of spotlight dwellers. lbe magjc ran out. boweve.r, in a subsequent 2-1 quarterfinal loss to Canyon Springs, which the Th.rs outshat. 36-5. Canyon Springs Coach Sharon Walsh echoed Bouette's disbelief over the Cougars' vic- tory, which both considered for- tuitous, even in a sport known for unpredictability. Brett Balter, Tobin Junowich, Lee Hernandez, Brandon Brown, Scott Tackabeny, Jake Opp and James Perkins were additional consistent contribu- tors for Bouette, who moved to Boston following the season and will not return. Bouette and the players alike also credited fiery assis- tant Ziad Khoury with much of the Sailors' success. ' . Soccer, water ·polo, Deere take center stage • Heavyweight wrestler and two playoff teams post majority of Sailors' victories this season. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -While the so- called ·major" sports of football, basket- ball and baseball combined to win 18 of 59 games during Newport Harbor High's 1995-96 boys athletic year, soccer and water polo each won 20 games and heavyweight wrestler Jason Deere post- ed 42 victories to seize the spotlight. Deere, who joined fellow juniors Matt Large (l 03-pound wrestling) and Shane Reese (discus throw) as the only Tars to win Sea View League titles, werit on to finish second at the CIF Southern Section Division II Finals, second at the Masters Meet and seventh at the C IF State Cham- pionships. He finished 40-9. Soccer, keyed by prolific senior scor- ing machine Justin Kerr, made a story- book run to the Southern Section Divi- sion ID quarterfinals, but the Sailors were left shaking their heads in disbelief after falling, 2-1, despite outshooting Canyon Springs, 36-5. Featuring nine seniors and coming off a supremely successful sununer, water polo Coach Bill Barnett found himself down- playing the lofty expectations of those pre- dicting a return to Newport's former domi- nance in the sport. But despite several players' motiva- tional technique of dying their hair blue tor a late-season surge, the Tars lost in the section quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. Individual honors were plentiful as Wes Badorek earned Co-Most Valuable Player laurels in volleyball and was the school's Male Athlete of the Year. Chris Richardson garnered first-team All-CIF recognition in water polo and junior Joe Urban collected all-district honors in foot- ball and baseball. Additionally, upset triumphs over Back Bay rival Corona del Mar in football and baseball will, no doubt, occupy high-pro- file spots in the respective scrapbooks of players in both sports, as will the volley- ball tea.m's five-game triumph over league champion Santa Margarita. Here's a sport-by-sport review: Soccer: When Kerr went down with tom ligaments in his left ankle late in reg- ular season, some figured the Sailors would limp through the remainder of their schedule and miss the playoffs. But. without the services of their top 5corer and co-captain, Coach Colin Bou- ette's team tied Santa Margarita in the Sea View League finale to clinch third place and a second life. Ken, considered out for the season, miraculously returned to score both goals in a 2· 1 wild card victory over Laguna Hills, then booted home a pair of penalty )dcks to fuel a 2-1 overtime upset of sec· ond-seeded Santiago. The Tan then handled Riverside Poly, 1-0. before nmning out of magic against Canyon Springs, finishing at 20-6-4, 4·3· 3 in league. Nuzum. a left-handed transfer from Corona del Mar, fashioned a 2.!n ERA and struck out 64 in 70 213 innings. Urban, who also sparkled at third base, was a first-team all-league choice, while Nuzum made the second team. Senior second baseman Gavin Tomala.s (.300 with two homers, 15 RBI and seven stolen bases in eight attempts) was the Sailors' third all-distrlct selection, while junior catcher Paul Jones hit .338 and senior first baseman Andy Langsdon belt- ed four round-~ppers. The Sailors fin- ished 8-15, 2-3 in league. Ten.Ills: Stanford-bound senior Geoff Abrams, who played only a handful of regular-season matches, represented the Sailors in winning the 18s division at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. It was his third singles title at the prestigious event. Abrams won all 18 games to try to help Coach Charlie Bleiker's squad defeat Santa Margarita in the Sea View League finale and force a third-place playoff with the Eagles. But the Tars were defeated on games, 81-79, after the match ended deadlocked, 9-9. Newport finished 8-11, 4·6 in league. 1fack and field: Reese uncorked a personal-best of 165-6 in the discus to fin- ish third at the Orange County Champi- onships, but didn't seriously approach that performance during a noteworthy postseason.
