I take exception to the comments made by David H. Wallace in his July 18 letter to the Pilot regarding the use of Bison Avenue (Mailbag, "Cutting shortcut argument short"). Wallace presumes that Mike Bigi, an Eastbluff resident, thinks the use of Bison is "furtive and unfair. H If Wallace considered speaking to any Eastbluff resident concerned with the traffic miti- gation issue, he would realize that the "shortcut# has turned into a safety haz- ard attracting inconsiderate and speed- ing drivers. No one has argued the public nature of Bison Avenue in Eastbluff. However, it appears Wallace would have us become distracted with our rights as dri- vers to use shortcuts. Unfortunately this shortcut for Bluffs and North residents is in a residential neighborhood. Wallace is apparently disinterested in this fact. He also seems blind to the hundreds of Eastbluff children in the A, B and C sec- tions who are exposed to the dangers that exist as the result of sellisb, impa- tient drivers. To reintroduce the obvious: Designated speed limits and state law mandate 25 mph on residential streets unless posted otherwise. If Wallace focused on his Eastbluff neighbors' real issues, he would not question Bigi's honesty concerning safe- ty. Perhaps he would then support our efforts to mitigate •cut-through" or shortcut speeders. The test measures recently implemented have resulted in 2, 100 fewer cars per day on the streets of Eastbluff, a majority of them shortcutters. I would, therefore, invite Wallace to eschew his shallow •public streets" argument and embrace the more s11b- stantive and community-benefiting safety concerns of his fellow Newport neighbors. CARL E. OSSIPOFF East bluff We need to reopen the intersection of Bison and Jamboree Road because it is a very false thing in the first place (·East bluff traffic a test for school," July 22). In order to relieve the traffic jams you need to be able to have a two-way street going in and out of Bison and Jamboree. That would then 'open up the streets closer to the Ralphs shopping center. Therefore, you could have a two-way street. A second thing is, why not try for a short time a one-way street around the schools instead of a two-way street with the jams? You could have it so that the parents could be in the lane closest to the schools, have it go one way and circle back by Lady Queen of the Angels and around and back past the field. The third thing is, we need at least another stop sign where we have a crosswalk in front of Corona del Mar High. It may be that a stoplight would be needed depending upon how much traffic comes into Eastbluff Elemen- tary. But at a minimum we need a stop sign on Eastbluff. These are three things I think would help. Opening up the Bison/Jamboree [intersection) and cre- ating a one-way road around the schools would help to relieve the left turns into the school, which cause part of the traffic. And it's very possible that we need to take a traffic survey and see wbere to put a stop sign, cer- tainly by that crosswalk at Eastbluff Drive and Alba Street. A few months later I went to Shanghai and looked up my old friend Ivan. He invited me to have dinner with his family. That was my introduction to the White Russian colony in Shanghai. Eastbluff residents say they want to keep Bison closed to through traffic across Jamboree to keep drivers from cutting through their residential neigh- borhood. But residents of The Bluffs say the closure is inconve- nient, and the public streets should be open to the public. The issue has been a thorny one fQr city officials and has divided the neighborhoods involved The Eastbluff Response League, a foe of the intersection changes, even took out a half· page advertisement in the Daily Pilot on Saturday to strengthen the opposition. What the solution will be remains to be seen. In a letter to Mayor Tom Edwards last week, The Bluffs Homeowners Association Presi- dent Cork Levinson suggested closing Bison to cross trafik only from 7 :30 to 8:30 a.m. and from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. But Barry Eaton, president of the Eastbluff Homeowners Asso- ciation, wrote another letter urg- ing the council to make the changes permanent,, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The meeting is set for 7 p.m . in the gymnasium at Corona del Mar High, 2101 Eastbluff Drive. SlllLlllS THE SHEFLlrf CLAN Newport Harbor's four brothers gained legendary sta~. Tiere were only two fullbacks in the 1940s worth mentioning in the minds of Orange County football fans -Harold (Hal) Sheflin of Newport 1-!arbor High and Felix "Doc" Blanchard, an. All-American out of Vlest Point They were 200-pounders who could thunder through China walls, tackle fiercely and punt with authority. Sheflin was always praised with respectable cheer since be could kick a ball over 70 yards, which was further than Blanchard by 10-20 yards. They were both swift runners and artlul with hips and straight arms to knock would-be defenders away. Shefiin grew up with four Harbor High varsity teams, 1939-42, and earned first team All-CIF honors his senior year after leading the Tars to the Small Schools CIP championship game against Bonita High and its sensational star halfback Glenn Davis, who would become another All- American at Vlest Point and teammate to Blanchard. No one could slow or stop Davis in '42 except one giant from Newport Harbor and that was Sheflin. With Sheflin, Newport could take charge in the first half, 6-0, before the Tar fullback injured bis ankle and was forced from the game. Only then could Davis resume his familiar pattern, ' generally running for 4-5 touchdowns a game. Although Sheflin had bruised Davis worse than a bull ele phant, Davis still had enough strength in the second half to pace Bonita to a 39-6 victory. No one outside the Bearcat Field near Pomona would ever know much about the 215- pound Sheflin or the impact he carried. But Davis, in time, would tell fans about it in one edition of 1lme Magazine after he linked up with West Point. He had already exchanged heavy blows with other collegians and with 'eammate Blanchard in Army practice sessions. It was fair to ask who he thought was the toughest football player was that be had faced. David made it quick, and simply said, •Harold Sheflin of Newport Harbor High School." Gridders who advanced to Vlest Point and the Naval Academy during World War Il could safely advance their careers and not fret about the draft. But players like the Sheflln brothers, and many other high school graduates were mostly destined for the military and combat service. An example of such would find two of the four Sbellin ' brothers suffering serious injuries and near-death scenarios. Bob, the oldest. survived the sinking of the USS Gambier Bay in 19«. He was in the water 72 hours. A huge shell just missed him in the engine room. Harold had been operating a boat gun before his merchant ship was struck.
