The walls around the schoolyard may
seem particularly daunting for parents
whose first language isn't English.
At Pomona Elementary School, which has
one of the highest limited-English student
populations in the Newport-MeB Unified
School District, teachers are helping parents
scale that wall by becoming dCbve in their
children's education.

ents helping out here every day.*

grades are attending the monthlong summer

Five years ago the Costa
Mesa Police Deparbnent set up
its first drunk driver checkpoint
in an effort to reduce the num-
ber of alcohol-related accidents.
The checkpoint followed an
increase in arrests, accidents,
injuries and fatalities involving
people driving under the mflu-
ence of alcohol and drugs. It was
intended not only to help police
arrest drunk drivers, but to edu-
cate drivers about the dangers
of driving under the influence,
and about the state's seat belt
Jaws.
In addition, police hoped
their visibility would "create an
awareness that the Costa Mesa
Police have a zero tolerance
stance," Sgt. David Walker said
in September 1993.
The checkpoint, set up on
Harbor Boulevard just north of
Wilson Street, was the first ot
three that year, which together
resulted in 31 arrests for drunk
driving.
NOW
The Cbeck;points have contin-
ued to help police clear the
roads of diivers who have
imbibed too much.
Police conducted four check-
points that led to 33 arrestS in
1994, 12 checkpoints resulting
in 90 arrests in 1995; six check-
points with 35 arrests in 1996,
and five checkpoints with 35
arrests in 1997.
The numbers do not include
the airests made near the
checkpoints, including those of
people who tried to avoid the
checkpoints, Sgt. Don Holford
said.

for driver's licenses, seat belts
and proof of automobile insur-
ance -and a DUI checkpoint is
scheduled for later this year.

NEWPORT BEACH -Junior lifeguards
from Newport Beach recently placed in the
top three in several categories in the Nabonal
Junior Lifeguard Championships in Chicago.
The Newport Beach team also fared well in
individual and team events. Some of the
results include: Steve Harris, third place in the
distance run, second in the swim relay and
thlrd m the rescue race; Leah Robertson,
eighth in the rescue race; Max Robison,
eighth in the paddle race; Ross Sinclair, sec-
ond in the swim relay; and Jack Turner, sec-
ond in the run relay and fourth in the swim
relay.
The team of Ryan Bean, Erin Dawson,
Tommy Holbrook1 Jason Johnston, Patrick
Jones, Laura and Tyler Eck, Nathan
Marsteller. Kyle Noble, John Nordstrom, Gar-
rick Torrey and Meredith Waters finished sec-
ond in the team swim relay.
During the six-day trip, the Newport Beach
contingent watched the National Ufeguard
Championships, boarded a boat tour on Lake
Michigan and caught a Chicago Cubs base-
ball game at tustoric Wrigley Field.
The 18 youngsters combined with other
California squads to win the overall competi-
tion. Their point total from swim relays and
runs were better than 25 other teams that rep-

The making of James
Cameron's "Titanic" will be
explained by historian Don Lynch
and fellow film crew members
Ken Marschall and Tom Nicholai
on Aug. 22 at the Newport Har-
bor Nautical Museum.
Marschall was the movte's
visual historian and Nicholai was
the movie's model maker.
A wme and cheese reception
will be held at 3 p.m.; the slide
presentation begins at 4 p.m.

the menu from the ship's last
night afloat will be offered at 6:30
p .m. for an additional cost.

audience. And both of us are a
litUe leery of signing our names
to the other's opinions. What if
we come upon a topic where
there is no compromise, such as
whether wearing Birkenstocks
should carry a felony convic·
ti.on?
Already we're mulling the
question: Which is more impor-
tant, mend.ship or a byline?
Hmmm.
This column is a very public
place to find out the answer to
that question and a whole lot of
other ones we'd all like to ask
about Newport. Our only goal
is that it be fun for everybody.

board seat representing Corona
del Mar.
Schwarz, 51 , and her two chil·
dren attended and graduated
from Newport·Mesa schooJs. She
has taught in the district for 14
years.
Her years of involvement with
Corona del Mar area schools have
given Schwarz an inside view to
the needs of the district's largest
zone, which will enable her to
fairly represent it, she said.
·1 don't have a particular plat·
form,• she satd, "but I have a
wealth of information on New·
port-Mesa schools and I would
like to be of service."
Both Newport Beach incum·
bents, Stokes and Judy Franco,
will be facing competitors in the
Nov. 3 election. Bond trader Tom
Szulga has filed to run against
Franco for the 5th District seat.
But all three Costa Mesa
incumbents -Jim Ferryman,
Wendy Leece and David Brooks
-will not face any competition

rung against the incumbent could

needs to be some new blood on
the school board because as good
as our schools are, they could be
better.• ,
·Schwarz said her connections
m Corona del Mar make her a
viable candidate to replace
Stokes, a one·term board member
who was previously a principal at
a Santa Ana elementary school.
•1 think I can do a better job,•
Schwarz said. "I have either
taught at or attended every school
in the zone. I know the strengths
and weaknesses of each school."
Stokes, who beat out three
challengers in her first race for the
school board in 1994, said her
expertise in curriculum will make
her particularly effective as a
board member in the coming
years.
"We just b..IIed a new superin·
tendent and he has a strong inter·
est in curriculum. which is my
forte,• she said. •1 feel strongly
that I am an advocate for children
and I strongly support public edu·
cation.•
Having served four years on
the board, Stokes said she
believes she knows how to work
with the board to both promote
the interests of her zone and as
well the entire district.
•Another priority 1 see is that
we have to give our teachers a
raise,• Stokes said. ·we're having
some challenges but we have to
look for ways to give them a
decent raise."

Brooks' Costa Mesa zone.
The Newport Coast and Bonita
Canyon annexations would
increase the number of registered
voters in the Corona del Mar zone
to as many as 35,000. Some resi-
dents fear that will leave them
unfairly represented on the
board.

intense su.ouner with the U.S.
women's national volleyball
team, senior setter Misty May, a
graduate of Newport Harbor
High, returned to Long Beach
State for the first day of practice,
which starts today, determined
to lead the 49ers to the national
ti Ue th.is fall.
"Winning a title would make
her a complete player," Long
Beach Coach Brian Gimmilla.ro.
•It is one thing to be the best
player, to be a complete player is
something else entirely."
The national championship
has eluded May and her team-
mates for the past three seasons.
As a freshman, May led the
49ers to the NCAA second
round. In 1996, Long Beach lost
in the regional tiUe game and in
1997, it lost at the final four.
After so many close calls, a
championship would be a fitting
culmination to May's college
career. "We've had this
sequence going,· May said.
"Th.is year our team is due."
In an effort to help make her
team better, May spent a month
and a half training and compet-
ing with Team USA. The train-
ing included a local tour against
the Canadians and a trip to
Japan.
"Japan was awesome
because they always have such
good players," May said. "It was
nice to play Canada in front of
some of the club teams that I
played for.• The final match of
the three-match Canada tour
was played at UC Davis.
The results of the trip demon-
strated why May stands a good
chance of finishing her college
career a champion . By all
accounts, May played brilliantly
for Team USA. despite the fact
that she would a.rgµe otherwise.

don't have pro tootball teams or

The road to all~ those goals
began today as the 49ers started
a grueling two-week workout
period. Practices are twtce a day,
both of wluch a.re three hour ses·
sions.
"l didn't feel m sync because
f had only been with them for a
month," May said. • f spent a lot
of time getting beat up on, I
thought. But everybody else was
telling me that 1 was really
impressive.~
That lund of humility is what
could help May, who was named
the NCAA Player of the Year in
19971 guide the 49ers to their
third national title in nine sea-
sons .• The critics. agree as Long
Beach State. which won in 1989
and 1993, comes into the season
ranked No. 1 by Vo//eyball Mag-
azine.
O ne effect of such high prd.ise
is that it often raises the level of
play of a team's opponents. This
doesn't concern May.
"Other teams will have noth-
mg to lose by trying to beat us,"
May said . HBut we have such a
checmstry that we can tum it
against an opponent rather than
shying away. We have all the
ingredients for a championship
season."
Another thing that May won't
let affect her game is the near-
celebrity status she has achieved
Al the end of th<1t two weeks,
the 49ers will travel to Albu-
querque for the fourth annual
State Fa.rm/NACWAA Volleyball
Tournament (Aug. 28-29), a pre-
season tournament that will show
how good Long Beach State real-
ly is. ln the 4 9e.rs' way stand three
