They pleaded for the board to delay the permit until there is sci- entific data available that sefs lim- its on how much pollution and nutrlents the bay can su.stain in order to survive and th.rive. But proponents, including offi- cials from government environ- m ental and water agencies, said if the project goes forward it will enable them to collect such sden- tifi~ata at the variou.s testing sta- tions they plan to establish in the bodies of water. They said the water project was a demonstration et how IRWD was a "leader in water conserva- tion and creativity," and said the project could enhance and pre- serve the existing wetlands in the San Joaquin Marsh, where the reclaimed water will be dis- 1----~~G-&ei&r,e-making ' the San Diego Creek, and finally ·me bay. Experts on both sides agreed the discharge of reclaimed water was not a danger to public health. · Those who sweated in the gru- eling campaign to save the bay were crushed by the board's deci- sion. · "I'm horribly disappointed," said Bob Caustin of Defend the Bay, who plans to raise funds immediately to appeal the board's .decision. "The whole thing is an incredible problem that we cannot allow to go forward." While some resolved to fight on through the appeal process, others placed their hopes in Newport Beach Assemblywoman's Marilyn Brewer's bill, which ls before the state Senate. Brewer's bill -which already passed the state Assembly and is making its way to the full Senate before they recess in August - would block the IRWD from dumping the 5 million gallons of reclaim~ water into the bay. Ted Cobb, legal counsel for the regional board, said at Monday's hearing that if Brewer's bill is passed by the Senate, the board's vote •becomes meaningless." But Cobb said the bill shouldn't affect the board's vote. Apparent- ly, it didn't. The board members said they did not hear scientific evidence that indicated the project would be injurious to the bay. Instead, some board members lauded the ptoject's ability to save IRWD money and in tum. save the rate payers money; collect scientific data on wildlife in the bay; and for its innovative u.se of reclaimed water al a time when water is a -"This is a very controlled pro- ject. If we overstepped our bounds, it can be shut off within minutes," said board member Jer- ry King, a Newport Beach resident who said the scientific data pre~ sented didn't reveal'. the project would be detrimental to the l)ay. "Water is not getting~eaper and in the long run, we need to reclaim every drop of water we can. Without that, we are all going to suffer." Hanson will be joining women's track icon Jackie Joyner-Kersee, a two-time Gold Medalist and World Champion, and Kelly Blair, tne 1993 NCAA heptathlon champion from Oregon, in representing the U.S . on the world stage. She beat out 1~92 Olympians Jamie McNear and Kym Carter, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively, for the honor. Hanson came into the eighth and final event of the heptathlon, the 800-meter run, in fourth place, trailing DeDee Nathan by 35 points. Laguna Niguel catcher Malt Cooper was a one-man arsenal all by himseU, rocketing a three-run ~or:ner in. Che first inning and ~- gle, two walks, four RBI and five runs scored. An~ while the Laguna Niguel dub played like winners tQ adv~ce to the next step in the winner'~ bracket, Newport Beach played, at times, like a team which can find considerable success. Left-hander Brandon Lewis will take the mound Wednesday at 5:30 against the loser oC tonight's South Irvine-Rancho Niguel game, also at the spacious Youth Atpletic complex here. Among those counted on to pick them up are outfielder Brian Cole and third baseman Steven Ward, each who produced a pair of base hits and a run scored in Newport Beach's six-hit attack. Laguna Niguel shoved out to an 8-0 lead through 31/2 innings of a six-inning game which lasted two hours, 43 minutes, but Manager Pat Ward's Newport Beach crew refused to go quietly. Steven Ward got aboard with an infield safety and walks to Charles Halladay and Josh Bradbury loaded the bases with none out in the fourth inning. Shortstop Kyle Massey came through with a one- out double to center to score two runners, and Brad- bury later came home on a passed ball on a play. which saw the trailing runner (Massey) caught at the pla te on a nip-and-tuck play. Cole led off the fifth with a base hit and scored on Andy Almquist's sacrifice fly to right, and the New~ port Beach nine scored again in the sixth when Josh Cornett (walk), Robert Della Grotta (single) and Cole (walk) loaded the bases, setting the stage for an rbi- walk to Billy Eagle. "The kids did a good job," said Ward, "we just p layed a very good team." Newport Beach, meanwhile. although displaying the potential lo do well in this townament, didn't play well enough offensively, or defensively, to win thiS one. While there's no argument to the play of Cooper and his three-run shot over the leftfield fence in the fitst·inning, it was, as it often is, a game of inches, and the inches belonged to Laguna Niguel. For instance: • Leadoff hitter Taylor Holiday's double over the 'third base bag-in the first inning was fair by six inches. •Newport Beach's Massey lined the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning 12 inches to the right of Holiday's two-bagger, six inches foul. • There were several other plays in the same vein, but in most instances it was Laguna Niguel with the edge, not to mention a fellow nemed Matt Cooper. ~ Niguel 14, Newport BeMh 5 · Laguna Niguel 304 133 · 14 13 2 Newport Beach 000 311 · 5 6 6 Schullman, Symes (4), Cooper (6) and Cooper, Sc'hullman (6); Russell, Bradbury (3), Della Grotta (5) and Almquist, Halladay (4), Almquist (6).
