This new cinema paradiso in· Newport Center opened Tues- day with screenings of "Inde- pendence Day," where space invaders zap practically every metropolis from New York to New Delhi. They even stop in Orange County to level the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station faster than you can say "Mea- sure S." The film was great -"Close Encounters" meets "Rambo" - but the cozy new flick house was the star. Every show in the three Stadium theaters was sold out Tuesday, theater manager Jim Woodin said. Woodin said audiences loved the new complex. He compared it to the Big Newport, the Long- time town favorite. "The big screen gives you the epic, "ne said . "The stacnurn puts you in the epic." Let's talk sound and vision. All of the seats are good in the Stadium. The screen is curved, providing a nearly direct view from the aisle seats. Warren has b~n looking toward to participating in the Old Glory Boat Parade, which will wind around Newport Harbor today. •rm proud to be an American -some of us are a little extreme,• -said the tanned and jubilant WaJ- ren, who will also sport a custom- "lllade, 2 1/2-foot high Uncle Sam hat, and matching red, white and to be the lead boat.• A member of both the Newport Harbor Elks Club and the Ameri- can Legion Post 291, Warre n brought out the biggest commer- cial flag you could buy three yea.Is ago when he bought his boat, "On The Fritz." "The kids get ~big thrill out of it. The little boys and girls put their hands over their hearts and sing 'God Bless America,'• said Warren, who works as a contrac- tor for a living. RESTAURANT AND BAKERY •While it's changed through the years, the Mariners Park July 4 bike parade has maintained its community spirit. By Rebecca L Harris, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -For ~e 23rd year, decorated bikes will roll, children will squeal with delight and parents will beam at their happy progeny at the annu- al Mariners Park Fourth of July Bicycle Parade. Kids who participated when it was a simple neighborhood parade now bring their own chil- dren to the event, which draws more than 2,000 patriotic souls. The parade was a parent- sponsored response to the city's lack of activities for children dur- mg y g epe - dence Day. Local parent Jo Vandervort vowed to create a parade to match those of other communi- ties, after fellow parent Carol Blanchard mentioned \he one he ld in Palos Verdes. Vandervort, a city parks and recreation commissioner, obtained some help from the city of Newport Beach's parks and recreation department and orga- nized the first parade, which con- sisted of 50 bicycles decorated by children. "We estimate the crowd by the amount of hot dogs sold,• said Dana Black, who has organized the parade for the past 11 yea.rs. Most of those attending partic- ipate in the parade, Black said. The parade has remained a casual event, without a theme or coordinated floats. Over the years, several changes hav~ been implemented to accommodate the growing number of parade onlookers. The addition of Barnaby the Clown 'bi the parade's fourth year has been a big hit, participants said. •Barnaby is the catalyst for .all the fun,• said Black. "Kids are on Rollerblades now,• notes Vandervort. • What has not changed is the continual outflow of community spirit. HTbe commanity gives us such strong support. It's phenomenal. The homeowners' association has been involved tor many years, 25 retailers automatically donate gift certificates and the city picks up . all the insurance and permit costs,• Black said. The parade and its accompa- nying activities run from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today. The bicycle parade is trom 10 to 10:30 a.m . and begins at Commodore Road and Mariners Drive, continuing down Mariners to Mariners Park. A patriotic program will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the park. A bicycle raffle, refreshments, dlld various games and competitions will begin at 11 a.m. Vandervort, who has attended the event every year and one year served as the parade's grand marshal, recommends it to all ages. Qld fashioned borne cooking is what you find here; dinner for two . delightful surprise because of the subtle dressing that is sparingly applied and a bowl of the daily soµp -creamed zucchini -gives new respectabili- ty to that pedestrian vegetable. We ordered chicken cutlPt Gorgonzola ($10.95), its cheese sauce almost drowning the accompanying tortelini. Ask for most of the sauce to be put on the side; it's delicious, but over- whelming. Lombardi admits it is his favorite thing to make and eat. Tender. moist medallions of J>QTk ($12.95) cooked in Burgundy wine are highly seasoned, accom· panied by sauteed vegetables which echo the same seasoning. Lombardi recommends his own version of penne carbonara with sun dried tomato pasta and I'm looking forward to an order of clams linguine and a sauteed onion pizza. Thaditional spaghetti and meatballs, and sausage, pep- pers and onions over pasta are here too, along with other classic Italian standards, starting at $6.95. Tira misu is made to order for dessert and Elaine Lombardi cre- ates special cheese cake and pis- tachio pie along with her fine house salad and soups, all at a pleasing, low price. The Lombardis are hosts who make you feel as if you are in their rose-filled dining room at home and Lombardi manages to prepare each dish to order in his spotless kitchen. They are friendly and hard-working owners who present a sweet, sentimental. atmosphere which manages to escape being a saccharine satire of itself. There is something kind of vulnerable and chaiming about the entire pack- age. Definitely worth a visit. Often problems are taken to ~e principal, and they are 11.!.ossed over and are not dealt with, with the teacher. '!'.""' This year we had a wonderful t'8cher and we were able to give ~ such a wonderful review. Ml'. Peller at College Park is the ~solute perfect teacher in my ~es and has been m the district fbr a long time. • Yet last year we had a tf.1Cher that had been in the dis- tlict a Jong time, and she's no . longer positive with the students, no longer a motivator. I wish I had an opportunity to evaluate her, although we did m,eet with her and the principal. But yes, it is a good idea, especially when teachers get tenure and are protected. As par- ents, we really need good teach- ers out there if we want our chil- dren to excel. DENISE HEINRICHS Costa Mesa I don't think parents should evaluate teachers based on the · fact that they don't see the class- rooms, they are not in the class- rooms, they probably don't know as much about teaching the sub- ject matter as the teacher does. I think that student evaluation and peer evaluation and superi- or5 evaluation is the way to go if one should be evaluated. I have just retired from nearly 40 yea.rs of teaching and that is my feel- ing. NEIL BENNER · Costa Mesa As a retired teacher I think this is really a ridiCulous idea. Usually the parents who com- plain are the ones who do not do what they sqould be doing for their children anyway. I feel that teachers are under enough scrutiny as it is and I also think that the district does a pret- ty good job of evaluating their teachers. Once again J think it is a ridiculous idea. DOR0111Y MCKEE Costa Mesa I don't th.ink it is a good idea to grade..tea~ers' performance this way. I feel that if parents have anything to say, they should discuss it with their teacher or the principals and not anony- mously. People are very sensitive to their negative comments. That way the classes are being evaluated simultaneously. If teaching practices or inabili- ties are apparent from the teach- ers point of view than they are also made apparent and both problems can be handled. Down to the question of the ev~uatioll§, the people who are most qualified to evaluate a teachers performance are the administrators and the teachers, staff who work with the teacher every day and see the teacher in action, in the classroom who observes on a formal basis and have the ability and training to evaluate. The students could also evaluate the teacher. Over the years I have had stu- dents evaluate me anonymously parents can evaluate, but only in an indirect way and this district- wide evaluation program needs to be re-thought. PLO MARTIN Costa Mesa I find it interesting on this Mnme to Grade Teacher~ that the questionnaires are being sent to the parents when (Superinten- dent) Mac Bernd is quoted as saying what we are doing is try- ing to get feedback from those most directly effected by our employees. It seems to me that our stu- dents are most directly affected. Especially at the high school, I guess at the high school level it would be more important than the elementary, but they do have opinions and thoughts about things. I don't go to school with our daughter so r don't have a clear understanding of how the teacher comes across in the class and bis or her delivery. I don't know it the class is stimulating or challenging. I'm not there and I don't think any parents are. Maybe the district could have ' passed out these questionnaires the last week of school, had them turned in anonymously and saved the $12,000. BAJtBAJlA de BOOM Newport Beach • EDnoA'S NOTE: Barbara de Boom is the wife of sdlool board President Jim 1 think evaluations of some sort are probably in order. How- ever, the method that they chose to use whether it be the superin- tendent or whoever, is ludicrous. The mailing expense, number one, was ridiculous. When the kids go home they could have taken them. No. 2, I think it is grossly unfair that parents who have never set foot, mor~ than likely, in any of their children's classes while relying strictly on the assessment that they get sec- ond hand through the. student is a ridiculous way to come with a meaningful, constructive criti- cism of the teacher. I just think the whole thing is a bureaucratic bungle, probably by somebody at the administra- tive level who is so far removed from the actual classroom because of their duties. Value of term limits, God in politics deb_ate_d_ M ayor Jonn Hedges' .column (June 10) revisits a topic about which so.many zealots have grown silent. The initial urge to rem~ve the Willie Browns of poli- tics has now been tempered by the many successors' desire to stay in power. Interesting, isn't !fl term limits really does: It gives us political neophytes and guaran- tees we'll always be stuck with the next neophytes in line. It does- n't have to be this way. At some levels we have ~ fallback. As example, look at the city. Thank God there is an ongoing staff such as the city manager and so on down the line to keep a his- tory, even a memory, of what's been done, bow things get done, and so on. An elected newcomer simply cannot be expected to · recall earlier discussions surround- ing issues revisited and decisions made, let alone the proper process. So, I cannot help but wonder, who operates as the city staff at the state and national levels? Is it the press? Or is it the career staff person? Whom we don't get to elect/re-elect? Who keeps all these elected neophytes we're guaranteed to be stuck with from spinning their wheels too long in the mud of discovery, from re-~ iting every issue ad nauseum when they finally make it to the House/Senate floor? Given the complexity of politics and governance, how can we vot- ers hQpe for progress in govern- ment if each succeeding politidan starts back at square <S'ne? a.EV. Well, nowhere, actually. Except maybe stuck in ladj.es' professional golf purgatory. While scanning the weekly LPGA newsletter in search of Moclcett, she was nowhere to be found following the tour's first eight tournaments. Ne~er made the money-leaders list. Some were concerned that Mockett's bad shoulder was acting up again. . Ah, not to be alarmed. Mock.ett is alive and well. To open the LPGA Tour season, Mockett missed the cut in every tournament, keeping a rather low profile. Mock.ett, though, a Newport Harbor High product. answered last month in one of the LPGA . Tour's toughest events in which to qualify, the U.S . Women's Open at Pine Needle Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., the third of four majors on the tour. She finished tied for 42nd in the n eamin SS 092 her o y WUllll.Dgs o e season heading into this weekend's Jamie Farr Kroger Classic in Ohio, which Mockett will bypass. So in her ninth start, Mockett finally qualifies. She has since missed the cut in the last three LPGA events, in Michigan, Minnesota and last week in Atlantic City. With her finish at the Open, Mockett is currently 147th on the LPGA money list. The top 125 automatically qualify for next year's tour. 0 Mockett typically skips the Ohio stop ... for two reasons: She doesn't like playing four weeks in a row, and secondly, Toledo, Ohio, is where Mockett had some bad luck as a rookie on the LPGA Tour in 1993. That year, as Mockett was preparing to tee oft, her new car was hit in the parking lot by someone cutting a comer too close. "Something always happens to rookies,~ she said. "I wasn't even driving it. I'd just taken it to the car wash, and the a~ da.nt in the parking lot asked i1 I wanted to park under a tree, but I asked him if I could park in this end spot, which 1 did. Toledo just happens to fall in the fifth week 0£ lbis stretch, so I'm skipping it.. Last year, Mockett made the cut in six of the first nine events. 1\vo yea.rs ago, tepd.initis in her should~ threatened to end her career. The sub-seven-minute perfor- mance put an end-to a pretty frustrat- mg 11 days for OCC. Grant thought be was doing bis team a favor by leaving early (June 22) for England and fabled Hen1ey on the Thames. "We'll be using a new Mat and we'll need some time to break it in," Grant said after the team's final morning practis;e in the States. "Hopefully, we'll have everybody settled in by the time ra~- N ice thought, but things didn't work out as planned. The team's difficulty in learning how to tie bow ties should probably have tipped Grant off that there would be some more problems along the way. After all the hours of drilling, and the six-step illustrations, one of the guys still showed up with his bow tie undone for the bus to the airport. The new boat, made by Res- olute, was billed as being able to take off five seconds from a good crew's times. In another unfortu- nate quirk, the bow was damaged going through customs and ended up in dry dock for a week. "Dave wasn't complaining, but of course it would have been nicer to have had more practice time,• Hadden said. "They only had four days of practice in the new boat. -"Tliey-enctett-up bOrrowmg a boat for most of the week and had some practice sessions with other teams.
